Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 232 It was 6.30am and my alarm had just gone off, there was barely any light outside as the morning had not quite woken up itself, amazingly there was also a thick covering of fog outside, it was lovely and cool, but no time for lazing around in bed this morning, I have a Skype session with my girlfriends, back in England, booked for 7.00am. Once dressed, I cleaned my teeth to make myself look half presentable, tricky at this time of the morning, put the kettle on, booted up the laptop and while that was booting up (takes ages [View Full Entry]

We left Perth yesterday in wind and rain and were pleased to finally stop for the night at the little beachside town of Cervantes to bed down for the night. After a rainy, windy night, we were thrilled that this morning the sun was shining. We left the caravan park and drove the 17 klms to the strange moonscape that is the Pinnacle Desert. We drove through the national park and once we’d parked the motor home, we walked amongst the Pinnacles. These are are statuesque wind-carved limestone pillars up to three metres high, rising out of the sand like ancient [View Full Entry]

24 May 2009 In rainy weather Ruth and I drove the two hours from our home to the Trail head at Tapanappa and were greeted with stunning vistas of the Southern Ocean and Tunkalilla Beach in the distance. We registered with the walk group and climbed on the bus for the ride to the start point at Cobblers Hill where we visited the smelly camp toilet before setting off by ourselves. The first 2 kilometres to Eagle Waterhole were down hill along bush trails and was quite easy and pleasant although a light rain fell along the way. From here we [View Full Entry]

After a home alone like dash to our connecting flight at LAX and 14 more hours of flying, we arrived safely in Sydney at 6:30am. Unfortunately, no kangaroos or Crocodile Dundee look-a-likes greeted us. Instead we were whisked away by a crazy cab driver, who stopped us short with the news of MJ's passing. At first, we thought it was some strange twist on Aussie humor, until the reality sunk in that the King of Pop had really left the building. The rest of the cab ride was a blur as we sat in silence listening to the poetic lyrics [View Full Entry]

Packed up camp and on recommendation went to the Working Museum at Birdsville. A real character ran a show on all the machines from 1970’s back to the 1800’s. Old fridges, washing machines, carbine lamp, old irons, huge biscuit tins, when you bought then by weight. It was mind boggling. Met two other Ultimate Campers and their owners, both were heading in different directions. The racetrack is just all dirt, but the Birdsville Races attract around 5,000 people come September. Apparently you have to queue for fuel when it is time to leave. Left late morning and stopped at C [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Here are some pictures from the flight. It was a couple of student's first flight. I thought their parent's might really like to see their smiling faces. The gentleman pictured here is our delegation manager for the trip and will be us from this point on. He is great. Also, thought you might want to see our stop at the playground and a couple of our guides. Will not post tomorrow probably because it is $15 for 24 hours. Will post as often as possible though. Enjoy! Bambi [View Full Entry]

Its been about 3 days since I have had internet or phone as we have just crossed the Nullarbor from SA to WA. We are now in Esperance. There were many interesting things to see while crossing the Nullarbor and it was definitly not anything like Nathan and I imagined. For one thing there had been rain so it was mostly green, and not desert like we thought it would be. The Nullarbor plain is massive area of limestone rock where no trees will grow. Underneath the rock are many caves and river/lakes. We were going to stop at some caves [View Full Entry]

We have been staying at the hostel in Kuranda for 2 days, about to head back to our original hostel in Cairns. This hostel was built in 1906 by the owner of the local sawmill chain for his daughter, and it is amazing (though in a somewhat faded and moldy way). Like most homes around here, the main living area is on the second floor. The "basement" is at ground level and consists of a concrete slab, several courses of brick, then unfinished wood for walls and ceiling. The ceiling joists are about 4 by 12 by 20 feet each -- [View Full Entry]

DAY 231 It was a cool night, again we slept under just one blanket, to start with the humidity was high and we lay there longing for the coolness of the night, the good thing though that we were inside and the mozzies were outside. Throughout the night we hear the usual abundance of wildlife, the different sounds the shuffling of the leaves, the crunching of the leaves, the strange calls from the birds or was that some kind of lizard hissing outside? It seems that we have adjusted to the time difference here, as we were both awake at 7.00, [View Full Entry]
