Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland Road
Used TomTom to find the shortest route. Only done the trip 20 times but still took us a different way. Possibly 100km shorter overall.
It has been a while since I posted. My apologies to those who look to this blog for light relief. I almost put something up a few weeks ago to say that we were back on the road again but we had to quickly rearrange things, cancel the flights and spend some time in Canberra. This time though we are on our way. The plan on our return to Australian on 25 July was very simple. We would drive to Darwin from Brisbane, finish the loading of the shipping containers with our gear, have them collected and then scurry back to [View Full Entry]

I am almost done my Master's and it has been keeping me busy, but I have finally left Sydney. I headed north up the coast to Newcastle and Coffs Harbor for a work trip with Monster Energy. I have to say I have a pretty amazing job for being in school, travelling around sampling energy drinks at fun events and Aussie beaches :) The best part is getting paid to travel to different towns. While driving, I ended up seeing some kangaroos in the wild hopping along the road which was pretty amazing. The beaches were beautiful and I liked the [View Full Entry]

I went on a great day trip with Oz Trails last week to see the Blue Mountains. The day started with an early pick up (not so fun after my night out at a beach front bar). We headed to a few look out points and waterfalls. The hike was not too bad, which was good because we had alot of slow older people as well as some couples wearing suits, hiking, really? I am not all nature and hardcore, but come on I know not to wear my heels hiking. Overall the day was really good, we saw kangaroos in [View Full Entry]

Point of no return

Well Cairns, We landed and got out and got to our hostel before 9am, to be told that we couldn’t check in till 2pm, but they would let us in at 1pm. Well being rather tired we sat by the pool and tried to sleep. Being way to hot we gave up and went in to town for a McDonalds breakfast. That day was spent lazing by the pool and then popping quickly in to town to the Lagoon, a man made beach on cairns’ waterfront including a beach - badly needed as cairns’ waterfront is just muddy mango flats. Dry Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Arkaroola
It is not uncommon to hear people in Adelaide claim that they live in the driest city, in the driest state, in the driest continent on Earth. There have been drought conditions in this part of the world for the last several years. Often, when I walk the streets of my new hometown I reflect on this fact. As I look around me and see all the beautiful gardens and flowering trees, I find it hard to believe that there is a lack of water. Not only is there a lushness around me, but my skin feels hydrated, and I lack [View Full Entry]

Day 176 - Karijini National Park to Tom Price We slept really well last night, must be all the fresh air! It’s another bright and beautiful morning here in Karijini National Park and with no ceremonies to stand on we’re away from camp just after 7am. There’s just one more gorge, Hamersley, that we’d like to visit but it’s at the opposite end of the park to where we are and seemingly it’s easier to reach it from Tom Price rather than from here. The road is pretty quiet this morning, not much wildlife or other traffic to speak of. Only [View Full Entry]

DAY 346 Today’s the day that we leave Cairns and continue our journey South, Andy as usual was up early this morning, I was up just after 7.00 but Andy was already outside packing the trailer, so I set about getting sorted out inside, little did we know that we would change our plans. It again is quite warm this morning and very humid, but it is overcast, I strip the sheets and pillowcases etc from the bed in order to wash them and hang them to dry ready for Julies return. Andy packed the trailer, our sleeping bags and [View Full Entry]
