Just over a three hour trip from Barkly Homestead to Camooweal which is only about 12klms over the NT/QLD border. We stayed on the billabong at Camooweal for a night just relaxing and taking in the beautiful countryside, its only about 4kms out of town. Were going to stay a few nights at the billabong but found out the Drover's Camp Festival was on so then hitched up and went into town and stayed at the pub. People come from all around for the festival and the Thursday night at the pub Tom Maxwell was playing, the guy we saw in Daly Waters and he played out at the festival as well. $70 gives you an entry into all events at the festival, Fri, Sat, Sun...... pretty good value! Met a couple of beautiful old drovers ... read more

An easy three and half drive down to Wauchope from Renner Springs, fuel up in Tennant Creek and straight through! Wauchope is now Devils Marbles Hotel and its about 9klm south of the actual Devils Marbles. Parked van up in park, unhitched, had some lunch and headed out to Devils Marbles (Karlu, Karlu, who the hell would know what this is) these very impressive granite boulders are scattered around a sprawling valley about 100 klms south of Tennant Creek. We have just ticked over 20,000 klms and $5,000 worth of fuel! The reserve itself is about 1800 hectares in size with hundreds of marbles not just a few. So where we sit here is 760klm south of Katherine and 393klms north of Alice Springs....our country is so huge the distances between places is mind boggling! We ... read more

Finished the ride in Brisbane by storing our bikes at Keith's warehouse & then meeting up at our hotel for dinner & drinks. David arrived after a circuitous route by cab, plane & cab from Parkes via Sydney plus I had arranged for Friz (Gary Ellison) my race mechanic in Australia when I was racing there in a previous lifetime, to join us ...great to catch up. Until the next adventure which starts in Albany New York State on 1st September ... read more

You only realise how big a country Australia is when you have to traverse across it quickly, towing a caravan. We drove four solid eight and and a half hour days, stopping at Barkley Homestead, a Road Side Rest area near McKinley, Lara Wetlands (2 nights), Cunnamulla then through to Wellington. It was great to be able to again visit Lara Wetlands and rest up and soak in the hot thermal pools before continuing our long drive south-east. My Dad was out of hospital and at home, and we will stay here as long as is necessary to support my parents.... read more

Sorry to leave Lake Argyle as it was such a relaxing and lovely park. Were going to have 2 days between Lake Argyle and Katherine but realised timing to stock up on grog wasn't going to work, so many rules, times, regulations and days they don't sell grog arggghhh, so had one night on the road at a lovely bush camp at Dingo Creek Lagoon just between Timber Creek and Gregory there ended up being just four vans which was nice! The scenery between Timber Creek and Gregory and surrounds was just lovely! Then into Katherine to stock up with groceries as they have a good Woolworths and BWS and Cellarbrations, fuelled up and got out of there! They have POLICE (what a waste of resources) manning the bottle shops getting your details etc as there ... read more

I left early as had a 230km trip to Varsity Lakes to visit my Father in Law who is in a rest home there (nearly 95) Nothing to note on the trip except lots of traffic a hold up on a steep downhill (Mt Edwards) for roadworks. Lots of traffic heavier the closer into the Gold Coast I got. Keith & Bryan rode direct Warwick to Brisbane where Keith's warehouse is. I had a further 85kms to Keith's warehouse. Once we had met up we sorted gear, I got some new stuff for our upcoming USA trip as my current stuff is past it's use by date. We heard from David. He decided to head straight to Melbourne as he needs to change his bike ownership there and as detailed before it's a mission out of ... read more

Penultimate Day: Out of Bollon we were on good sealed roads mostly, but trucks hauling heavy loads, crops & general cartage have given the roads a hard workout in this region. Good signage warning where you are approaching damaged bumpy surfaces, but unlike NZ no unrepaired potholes to contend with. Cold start to the morning and leaving earlier than normal at 8am (kangaroo feeding time) we were pretty cautious. We saw a few feeding on the roadside and I had a few I had disturbed crossing the road in front of me fortunately at a safe distance. A few Emus were about, but at a distance from the road unlike the goats which feed in the long grass beside the road. Nearly all of them when disturbed, luckily ran away from the road. We had 120kms ... read more

Day 12 (or something) Good breakfast in the restaurant at the Oasis motel and then we were out of town heading East on a sealed road. All the water throughout this part of the outback is Artesian bore supplied and has a strong sulphur smell. A bit off-putting but doesn’t seem to linger on your skin after a shower. However I been buying bottled water for my camel-back, as didn't fancy drinking it, but this morning I forget to buy some so didn't refill the bladder. Thirsty until our 1st stop! We did 100s of kms through flat country, red dirt and scrubby spinifex was all we saw besides a few animals, kangaroos, emus and the odd wallaby. After a couple of hours we arrived in the small town of Eulo where we visited an Opal ... read more

Reluctantly, we left Kakadu National Park and headed south to visit Edith (Leliyn) Falls. Leliyn is part of Nitmiluk National Park, which has as its key attraction Katherine Gorge. We had booked a campsite in Leliyn for our caravan, to enable us to enjoy an afternoon swim in one of the largest croc-managed plunge pools in the NT. The waterfall that cascades into the plunge pool is a long swim across the dark, foreboding pool, with reedy banks just like we had seen in Kakadu, potentially hiding fearsome saltwater crocodiles. With some hesitance, I ended up swimming across to the waterfall twice, taking the opportunity of a massage under the falls. After an overnight stay at Leliyn, we drove to Mataranka for a two night stay. We had unfinished business at Mataranka, as the renowned Bitter ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra August 5th 2023

Only 100klm from Wyndham to Kununurra so an easy day. We stayed at the Lake Kununurra Caravan Park which is a lovely spot with waterfront views. We were kind of thinking Kununurra would be a little more civilised as we had visited here nearly 20 years ago. After booking in and getting settled we had a text from management at the caravan park telling us to lock doors on the van at night, do not leave keys or anything inside your van where someone could see and easily grab them if they got into your van, also to make sure all your belongings are locked up! Geez do we feel safe.....yeeessss but a little uneasy! Then on the second day went to buy beer at the local Thirsty Camel to be told that they could not ... read more
