Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Coffs Harbour Oceania » Australia
Just making use of some free wifi on Coffs Harbour. We returned to the Blue Montains in the morning and after a short walk to see the Katoomba Falls we were still hungry for more and ended up at Scenic World. For the bargain price of $19 each we took a ride on the worlds steepest railway had a walk around the old coal mining district in the mountain via the boardwalk then headed back to the top in a cable car. Rachel had in fact done all of these things when she was last in Australia but when she reminded [View Full Entry]

October 17 - Waking up and having my usual breakfast of peanut butter toast and an orange around 830 a.m. was a great start to the eventful day. Andy, Maria, and I met up with Andy S Paul, and a group of at least 30 other mostly German students at the pavilion at UniCentral. We hung out for a bit then headed over to the bus stop to take the 615 bus to Landsborough train station. After overfilling the bus with standing room only left we were off to the station that only takes 20 minutes to get to. Then the [View Full Entry]

I know its been a while since we last blogged...amazing how time is flying down here! The month of October has brought us our first bit of SUNSHINE since we arrived in Perth, so we're finally able to get outside, get to the beach, and enjoy some of the outdoor lifestyle that WA has to offer. However, that wasn't before Kevin & June dragged us with Jen & Todd (Kevin's sister & husband) and a few more of their friends to the "Toodyay Races." The Toodyay Races are a set of day long races, where people migrate out to Toodyay (about [View Full Entry]

Day 175 - Karijini National Park Hey, it’s the birthday of somebody special today! That’s right Emma Gosling, we’re talking about you! Happy Birthday chick, sorry we’re not there to share the cake but we hope you have a great day and we’ll speak to you soon. Amazing, we woke up to a new sound this morning; the sound of swarming bees! They spooked us out a bit because they sounded like they were trying to get in the caravan through the fly nets! They were so loud we thought we were at least surrounded but when Darryl took a look [View Full Entry]

Well work Saturday was fun. Anyone who has worked in a bar will know "that feeling" you get when some complete muppets come in and annoy you. "Put an extra shot in, im mates with xxxx" or "I know you e closed but just one more". That feeling that festers in you when you want to smash their face into the bar. Just drives you crazy. They often come in drunk and wonder why you e not serving them. And the irony when they are twice your age and can understand why they look stupid for not knowing their own limits. [View Full Entry]

We spent a bit of time in the city of Cairns before and after our dive trip. Walking along the esplanade, we looked out into the mudflats and all the interesting wildlife it had to offer. We spotted a flock of pelicans, more species of crab than we could keep track of, and to our surprise, mudskippers! It was fascinating to watch these little guys - part fish, part reptile, they're like evolution in progress. At night, large fruit bats swooped around us. After our dive trip, we rented a car for a couple of days and headed out to the [View Full Entry]

DAY 345 I was up a little earlier this morning, just after 7.00, I must have had a good nights sleep, but still well after Andy who seems to be getting up earlier than ever. I find Andy outside beetling around with the truck and trailer getting bits and pieces ready for the off tomorrow. I find out, as crazy as he is getting up so early, that he sneaked off to the car wash place just down the road to use the vacuum cleaner to finish cleaning the inside of the truck. We have breakfast, and a little bit [View Full Entry]

We left Shark Bay and continued our way south. We stopped for a night at a freepark at Nerren Nerren, and had planned to stay at another at the Murchison River, a pretty spot with lots of wild flowers. But the FLIES were so bad, after lunch inside the van, we decided to continue on to Kalbarri. We stopped on the way and did 2 short walks at Kalbarri National Park, to Hawkes Head lookout and Ross Graham Lookout. Our flynet hats came out, first time for a very long time - (the Kurong in South Australia we think was the [View Full Entry]
