So we rented a car and first we headed North, up highway one, along the West Australian coast to a town called Geraldton. When we first arrived everything was closed, which we figured was quite normal as everything closes really early in Australia - we're talking REALLY early, 3pm on a Saturday early! Anyhow when we awoke on Sunday morning the city was a ghost town, everything had remaind shut. There were no cars, no people, even the seaguls hadn't turned out. When we inquired, a local woman told us we had 'expect this in a small town' - Geraldton is the biggest city in the Mid-West, population 24,000 - what would happen when we got to Kilbarri (population 1,000)?! Alas, all was not lost, it seems Western Australia has it all covered on Sundays, three ... read more

Ok, so today is the last day of the test and we have walked out of the ground at lunch leaving little faith in Monty and KP to bat out the rest of the day needed to secure the draw and keep alive the little hope we have of retaining the urn. Currently now writing this in Fremantle a city on the outskirts of Perth, just arrived and noticed we have officially lost the Ashes, won't bore you with my opinion, or the cricket... So, I left you with the last blog approximately a week ago, not been able to get to the internet since then, so sorry bout that. Right so, after the late night on the Saturday, I'm pleased to say that the Sunday wasn't a complete write-off and we made it out of ... read more

Last day in Perth. We watched the cricket in a pub while having breakfast. During the lunch-break I went to pay my 'fine' and then we saw England lose the Ashes in an Irish Pub. Went to the cinema and watched The Departed which was good but a bit far fetched at the end! Removed all traces of Englishness durin gthat day to avoid heckling!... read more

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE FROM SUNNY PERTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been a fun twelve days here so far catching up with new friends and old friends. It really is a beautiful part of the world out here. There is so much space! The beaches go on for miles, the sky is brilliant blue, and the sea is turquoise. Absolutely baking hot here though, Hotter than anywhere I've so far been. It was 40 degrees in the shade at the cricket yesterday - 50 degrees on the pitch! Lots of very sun-burnt poms staggering around looking very sweaty!! I'm aiming to join my remaining freckles together over the next few weeks! Let's get the depressing bit out of the way first - the cricket. We are getting hammered out here! My dad and I went from joyous optimism on day ... read more

Was feeling very tired today after 2 heavy nights, but managed to getup and go and play golf in 38 degrees of sunshine. The course was nice but I wasn't much good until the back-nine. I managed to fall over in a bunker on the second hole because I forgot I didn't have spiked shoes on. We went back to the Sheriton where Tim and his friends were leaving that night and then had an early one. The cricket was ok for England but the chances were that they were going to lose on the final day.... read more

Stayed three nights in a the lovely South Beach Cottage, about a mile from the centre of Fremantle. It is a very nicely laid out old cottagewhich we immediately felt at home in. On arrival day we just pottered around the markets in town, and got to know the lie of the local land. On full day one we did a more thorough exploration of the town, bought a a sun hat for Eden (one with serious elasitic so that she knows we are not messing about any more) and then in the afternoon went down to South Beach. Beach very blowy, water very cool, but all OK with that. Full day two finds us on the ferry to Rottnest Island, where we hire bikes and go for a spin round the island. Very hot day, ... read more

Kalbarri National Park starts a few kilometres out of the town and is a vast area of trees and stuff. Centred on the Murchison River, it also has a quite a spectacular gorge with some great features. We were keen to see it but on Monday morning, we got news that someone had died up at the gorge that very day; heat exhaustion or dehydration I think. Bugger! We also made aware of the temperature - a rather stifling 46.5 degrees c and 38 in the shade! An old boy on the campsite told us that he’d been to the gorge and that it was 51 degrees up there!! We spent most of the day in the pool and in shade! Anders and I agreed we’d go to the gorge at 5 or 6ish in the ... read more

Didn't go to the cricket today. Instead, Lee, Tim, Moods and I went to the horse racetrack (called Ascot!). It was good fun although I don't have a clue about horses. There was plenty of beer and cheap sparkling wine to be drunk. Later we went to Fremantle and the Little Creatures Brewery. There, we had some fantastic seafood and pizza. They also did some really nice pale ale that my Grandfather would love. Went to a couple of bars after that and while waiting for a taxi I was fined by the police for 'street drinking'. Apparently you can't drink in the streets in Perth (unlike other states!) I ended up in Northbridge again and got home at 5am again!!! Oh and England did bad in the cricket today (not that I saw much!)... read more

Well, having done well on the first day, England were bowled out for less than the Aussies. Didn't mind too much though as we drunk a lot of beer at the game today. We managed to get a plastic beer cup tower about 15 feet high later in the afternoon. Later that evening we were out in Northbridge (a popular area for clubs and bars). We went to Mustang bar which is an American themed bar with live music. It's really seedy but a good laugh. It got in just after 5am.... read more
