Bonjour family, friends and curious strangers Looks like my one week stop in the beautiful city of Perth, which stretched into two months, will soon be over. Yumi's visa problem is on the verge of being history so we are almost free to move again. The stay here was starting to bleed the travel funds pretty badly, but i managed to find work fairly easily when my diminishing bank account provided enough motivation. If anyone thinks the Albertan economy is flying high at the moment you need to check out Perth. Things are pretty wild here with China's expanding economy fueling a huge mining boom. Every industry is completely starved for labour. I am working two jobs at the moment. During the day I work for a furniture removal company. There's something I hadn't planned on ... read more

Hi all, Just a short blog to finish this part of our trip. Our last few days in Perth have been great! We have caught up with the family and the last super, and chilled in the SPA! What a great way to end the trip- super relaxed and raring to go... Thanks John and Elaine! Our last day was spent in Perth centre, we timed it right to meet Bec (yes my friend from uni) on the train on the way in. It was weird to see her so far from home, but great to catch up, and grill her for information on the east coast. Our last evening was spent with Annmarie and Tony to say thanks for puting up with us for so long... Now let me explain the monkey! Jill (Simon's Mom) ... read more

This is a retro post, but we wanted to share the experience with you, and the photos tell the story quite well! We had stayed the night in Fitzroy Crossing, a small township at what was a fording point for the Fitzroy River. Nowadays, there is a one lane bridge, but in days of yore I believe the river was crossed by a ford which could only be used in the dry season. It had rained all the previous day and through the night - we were in WA and the NT at the start of the rainy season. We had parked up in our campervan, which we named Brutus, in a camping bay which had become a small lake during our afternoon and evening stay. As we drank at the campsite bar (along with the ... read more

So between visiting wineries, breweries, swimming off beautiful beaches and digging up kangaroo skeletons in sand dunes, our long weekend down south in the Margaret River region was fantastic. We decided to go south while everyone still had holidays. We also managed to pick the same weekend as the massive concert in Busselton, Southbound, which made getting accommodation in the area rather tricky, but we had a great time. We left on Saturday, driving south on our way to Margaret River. We stopped off in Pinjarra for a late morning break and coffee, wandering around the little town and finding lots of outdoor art. We then continued on, until we saw a sign for an art exhibition in Vasse. We found some absolutely beautiful art by local artists, all on display in what lo... read more

Saturday Started with a Barbie Breakfast outside as the temperature was set to reach 38 today, Jason is really nifty on the Barbie and cooked up a mean breakfast of Pancakes eggs and Bacon, a great start to the day. Today was one that I had been waiting for a long time I was going to meet for the first time my Uncle Liam and Auntie Kala, Jason drove me the 15Km North to Butler where they live. I rang the bell and it was amazing the likeness of My Uncle and my Father. I felt like I have known them all my life. The conversation flowed and it seemed that we would never stop asking questions of each other. It was decided that Uncle Liam would take me on a walkabout tour of Fremantle and ... read more

Wow! I can not believe how fast the time has gone since I last blogged. It has just completely flown by, and now it seems, like only a little while longer till I'll be back in freezing cold Canada. So much has happened in the last 3 months, it's crazy to think I'll have to sum it up in one entry. Well, I must say...Perth was by far my favorite city visited in all of Australia. If there was one place I'd pick to live in in Australia, it would no doubt in my mind, be the pick of the bunch. So, after arriving in Melbourne in early November, Jason and I decided it was far too cold to settle down there and work, so we sparatically bought tickets to Perth and booked two nights into ... read more

Thursday was an overcast day and was a day we thought ought to be used to better ourselves. Janet, Lily and I travelled up the Swan Valley to sample all wonderful wines that are mad in this region, found quite a few I liked, but sadly as in South Africa; the cost of getting it home is ridiculous and its not worth it. Had a fabulous lunch at a Café within one of the wineries then Janet dropped me off at the station where I caught the train into Perth once again so that I could explore the city some more. ... read more

Friday was a really sunny day and such a pleasant breeze too. This was a day for sitting on the Beach and soaking up the rays. We set off to Mullaloo Beach early in the morning as the sun get so strong later in the day and you need to be in the shade by midday. The Indian Ocean was so warm and great to swim in. I remember swimming in it before, in the Maldives and how it is so much more buoyant than any other sea or ocean I have ever been in. Its something to do with the salt content I am told. After building a few sandcastles and drinking a few coffee’s we set of to Hillary’s Marina for Lunch. I left Janet and the girls on the beach and I went ... read more

With Christmas over, we next had to contend with the build up to New Year. As always, I behaved like a complete spoil sport and refused to look forward to celebrating the arrival of 2007 (or 2008 as I told my parents I was really looking forward to - got a little confused as to actually what year it was - whoops!!). The morning of the 31st Dec was spent debating what we were going to do that day/eve. Loads of people from our hostel made their way over to the gardens opposite the Opera House at 11am as they were determined to get the best views of the fireworks. We opted out of this as none of us could bring ourselves to que for hours and then sit for 13 hours waiting for midnight. Finally ... read more
