Caught the bus into Perth with the intention of booking the trip, the one I have chosen is the one for $825 as the cheaper ones are ok but would cost more when you add the food & accommodation. I went to one place and they offered 3 hours free internet if I booked with them, as I have found out you barter with the agents to see what you can get the trip for. The second place I went to offered an $100 discount bringing the price to $725 plus 2 hours free internet. I booked it through these as I did not feel I would get a better price, The trip departs on Saturday.Following this I then went into the Western Australian museum and spent an hour in there, seems to be very similar ... read more

After 1 night back in Perth it was time to head North and up the West Coast of Australia. I had placed an advert in the hostel to see if anyone wanted to come with me and share the costs. I had 2 replies, one from a belgian guy and one from a German girl, who sadly pulled out before I got back to Perth. I was gutted but Miguel seemed a nice guy after meeting him at last. Early doors on the first day after a boozy night before, I thought I only had to drive 400km to Geraldton but when I got there I had a rethink and drove in total 850km in one go from Perth directly to Monkey Mia. Monkey Mia for those who dont know is a World Herritage site and ... read more

Ho hum, off we go again. Our new ride is also a Hyundai, but it's the smallest model in the range and a bit of a come down after The Beast. It's a manual gear change and Willy has experienced some difficulty in trying to make it start in whatever gear it was in when he stopped at the junction. I didn't drive the Beast or any of the other automatics enough to get used to not having to change gear. The trip down to the south coast was very uneventful, heaps of traffic for the first 20km out of Perth and then nothing for miles and miles. It rained on the way down - proper rain - we haven't seen rain like that for ages, probably since we left Scotland. (Willy obviously doing his weather ... read more

Hey all, sorry I havn’t blogged for a while, but havn’t really been up to much. Just looking for a job mainly…which I now have…yippee. Me and Nat are now trainee room attendants (housekeepers) we had an interview on Monday (well technically I had the interview and Nat while she was there filled out an application form too!) Which was just as well really because they rang on Tuesday to say we had got it, this led to a guilt free day of sunbathing, as we were employed and didn’t really have to be doing anything. A phone call on Wednesday asking if we could work on Thursday morning (our induction was Thursday afternoon!) led to a mad dash to the shops in search of a uniform…black trousers shoes and white top were a lot more ... read more

After a few days of final preparations at Amanda’s folks place we were finally ready to take off on our first leg of the trip —a quick shakedown tour of the SW of WA to get an idea of whether we had; Too much stuff Not enough stuff Needed to modify our stuff Had the right stuff !!! (figuratively and literally) Certainly by the way the car felt we had more than enough stuff. The normally aspirated, standard diesel landcruiser 100 series not ever being renowned for setting any land speed records, was certainly not going to be setting a cracking pace fully loaded. 100kmh downhill with a following tailwind was likely to be the best case scenario.Still we have a year to get around so saving ourselves the odd half hour in the day was ... read more

Another longish flight then shuttle bus into town arriving a bit tired and worn out. Booked into hostel - nice room then went for wander round town. First impression - we were glad we're only here for a couple of nights (sorry Perth). Place was certainly a bit of a come down from Melbourne (which we both liked) but tomorrow is another day. Friday woke up to overcast sky and when I went out for my first cigarette of the day it was actually cold - almost pleasantly so. Found a decent internet cafe the connection speed in the hostel was abbyssmal (10 mins to get into e-mails then 5 mins to actually open them!). Booked ourselves a hire car then went to tourist office to get some better idea of where we might be going ... read more

Having been in Sydney for over a month I really fancied getting back on the road and visiting pastures new. I jumped on a 5 hour Qantas flight to Perth and to the last Aussie state I had yet to visit, Western Australia. I arrived in Perth mid afternoon and was bowled over by the heat, a really dry heat around the 35-40 degree mark, I had been warned it was a hot area. First day I didn't do too much really, met my mate Phil and wandered around the city, a few photos and a few pints of beer. I knew I'd be hitting the road in a few days so it was my first and last chance to hit a few bars and get pissed. Backpackers night at the Aberdeen hotel (2 for 1 ... read more
