Surprise… we’re home, After three months of secrecy we wondered whether we had really managed to pull off our surprise trip home. With numerous near slip ups in conversation and a distinct sudden lack of plans for winter we were doubtful. Not only that, we’d arranged some locum work with our former employee’s whilst we were home to help with the savings, being small towns surely someone would let it slip. At the last minute we gave in to KB and Sas who were desperate to know our plans and whether we would be attending their engagement party, especially after they offered to pick us up from the airport. “We’ll see you Thursday at 8am” via skype link up. “yeah.. in two days”. KB and Sas kindly met us at the airport and we returned to ... read more

Hey there travel buddies, I hope this finds you all well and warm … much warmer than us I hope! While our days often range between 12 to a pleasant 19 degrees (down here in northeast Victoria), unfortunately the same cannot be said for the nights. Recently I have taken to wearing 4 layers of clothing which include not 1 but 2 jackets, the outer layer being mostly fleece. I also have a delightful deer stalker hat, a pair of full body thermals with white and blue horizontal stripes and some thick grey crocheted socks courtesy of all the important ladies in my life! Combined they make me look like an escapee from some nut house! (Thanks guys!) Maybe it is a result of being in Queensland for the past 7 years but I can no ... read more

Hi everyone After Lakes Entrance we drove down to Wilsons Prom and spent a night in the National Park Camping Ground at Tidal River. On 8th Feb 2009, the day after Black Saturday, a dry lightning storm ignited bush on Wilsons Prom. This fire burnt 25,200 ha over 5 weeks, close to 50% of the National Park. We drove through some of the fire affected areas, but mostly it was in remote and rugged country. The campsite area was saved by a lucky change of wind direction. It was drizzly, blowing hard and cold while we were there, but we did manage to do some of the walks. We then had 2 nights in Melbourne, got sorted and left at last to travel NORTH and eventually circumnavigate Australia anticlockwise. We drove up the Hume Highway motorway ... read more

Day 333 (23.2.08) After a week of training at PCI we were glad to get out of the city for the weekend to meet up with Jeremy and Carly. Having last seen them in China over a drunken night and an extra hot hotpot, we had organised to go and see them up in Wodonga to spend the weekend catching up. It took us about 4 hours to drive up to where Wodonga sits right on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Now we are both used to driving long distances back in the UK and, unlike some of our fellow countrymen, think little of a four hour drive but even at home we probably wouldn’t drive that far just for one night. However, since travelling around Australia in the van we’ve begun to ... read more

Heading out! The next morning we carried our packs to central station and headed across town to King's Cross to pick up our van. Carolyn's mother had wired the money to the owners account, and we had only the paper to sign and then it was ours. We realized on the way there, that we hadn't really done much back-packing as this was the first time we had really had to carry our bags any distance, and it really wasn't that far! We dropped Steve off at the airport, and headed out of town in our newly acquired van - dubbed Betsy! To see it, the name is very fitting, and when you come to a fairly steep hill and she needs a little encouragement, it rolls right off your tongue.... common Betsy...common! We had ... read more
