Wednesday (1/9/2010) Surprisingly by 6am the following morning the port was still again as we boarded our ferry to Split. After a snooze we pulled in to a pretty port town. We stored our luggage and bought bus tickets for the afternoon to Plitvice leaving us a few hours to explore Split. Starving first stop was coffee and pastries (our second worst addiction to ice cream!). We battled the tour groups through yet another old town. We passed through the Silver gate to the Peristal (central court) and the grand Cathedral Sv Duje. We climbed to the top of bell tower for view of the port, old town and distant countryside. We climbed back down continuing through the vestibule into and back along the promenade to the new town for some shopping at summer sales. Jez ... read more

Monday (30/8/2010) After an unplanned sleep in we packed up our gear and returned to the port for the ferry to Korcula (A larger island about an hour from Mljet). Winging the accommodation again we were greeted by a mob of touts with rooms and apartments. We took up Mr Simioni offer (a passionate Croation man) with a beautiful apartment right in the center of town. We got some lunch and went to explore the town just missing the bus to Normandy beaches opting for a swim where we were instead. The water was freezing in comparison to Mljet hence the swim was short lived and we snoozed in the sun. As the sun began its descent it cooled off so we headed back to the apartment for a warm shower, booked some flights and made ... read more

Saturday (28/8/2010) Our host dropped us down to the Port and pointed us in the direction of the passenger ferry, (as it turned out it was quicker and cheaper than the car ferry). We joined the growing queue happy not to be one of the late ones turned away and got a couple one way tickets to the Island of Mljet (as recommended by KB and Sas). We arrived at Mljet a couple hours later and took one of the local touts offers of a cheap apartment just 500m from the port. We got lunch supplies whilst the prepared our apartment and enjoyed our salad rolls in the sun of our balcony. Afterward's we hired some bikes and set off into the National Park to Mljet's famous lakes. After a steep climb and a couple consultations ... read more

Thursday (26/8/2010) We started our Croatian leg of the journey considerably later and slower then planned and with stinking hangovers. We headed to the beach for a swim with Rory. It was a beautiful warm morning, cloudless blue skies, crystal clear warm (enough) water. After our swim Rory headed back to catch a ferry to one of the islands and we chilled out on the pebble beach making the most of the sun. We grabbed some lunch and headed back for a quick change before we ventured into the old town. Not accustomed to the heat (and starting to wonder how we would survive our first summer back in Australia.. nothing to do with the hangover) we took the bus into the Old Town. First stop was ice cream from Dubrovnik’s original ice creamery.. delicious. We ... read more

Tuesday (24/8/2010) Up and at em thankfully for our last Irish breaky (otherwise we mightn’t fit in our clothes) we fare welled our lovely host Kate and her husband and thanked them for there amazing hospitality. We were promptly picked for our Belfast Black cab political tour by our driver Shaun. An amazing and extremely educational tour, as we got a glimpse at what it would have been like to live in Northern Island at its worst. As we past political buildings, the international murial's, the peace wall (which we too signed!), churches and memorials, Shaun told us their story, and many others including his own personal experience in jail, the great escapes and the villain's. The four hours flew by and before we knew it we were back at our rental with directions for the ... read more

Saturday (21/8/2010) After breaky we decided to go on a tour of the Burren. Neither of us exactly sure what to expect and perhaps both feeling a little lazy we were happy for someone else to lead.We got some excellent directions and Kilfonora Hostel kindly offered to ring ahead just in case we were a few minutes late. We arrived with a minute or two to spare and John our leader was expecting us. He was also waiting for a tour bus so we checked out the photo’s by the fire in his beautifully decorated Grandma’s house. Once another (large) tour group arrived we set off through John’s family farm and up into the Burren. The Burren as it turns out is the name given to the entire region because of the limestone hills or in ... read more

Friday (20/8/2010) After a quieter night our friend had left due to the inclement weather we set off early for a morning run. We moved our car to the free day car park and picked up some supplies for a picnic lunch. Next, we hired a couple bikes and set off for Torc Mountain. We took in the beautiful scenery as we road along the lake past some old famous house . After a minor detour (riding 3km in the wrong direction..opps) we parked our bikes at the base of Torc waterfall (which was beautiful) and made our way on foot of the mountain. Along an alternating pebble and sleeper path we climbed, and climbed and climbed! At each turn hoping we’d reached the top only to discover it was a bluff and we still had ... read more

Wednesday (18/8/2010) Relatively refreshed after a full Irish breakfast we set off for a look around Cork. Our first stop Blarney Castle. About 20 minute drive from Cork through luscious green countryside. We walked through the beautiful gardens to the famous castle and climbed to the top to kiss the famous Blarney stone. Carly puckered up whilst Jez stuck to the photography. After checking out the wishing steps, witches kitchen and beautiful gardens. We made our way back to Cork, finally finding a car park (just about back at our B&B) we made out way to the farmers market picking up a delicious antipasto lunch and finding a conveniently located park just across the road to enjoy it in the sun. We wandered through the streets past the street preachers, checked out the price of hurling ... read more

Friday (13/8/10) ‘Breakfast 5.30, 6 we hit the road’ Jack (this was starting to become routine!) After a restless night we headed for the border back into South Africa, despite the long queues everything was going seamlessly, too seamless in and out in ten minutes.... until our truck paper work got held up, a couple hours later we finally crossed the border stopping for a groceries and breaky number two. We cruised through the gates of Kruger National park midmorning for our first game drive of the day. We stumbled across a group of giraffes at the water hole having a drink back legs spread wide apart, front legs bent to allow their long necks to get to the water, a hell of a lot of work just for a drink. But otherwise it was a ... read more

Friday (6/8/10) Drive Day Another early start we were back on the truck this time bound for Mozambique! We stopped midmorning at a local stone curio’s picking up a couple souvenirs. Back to the truck we cruised along some the very narrow single lane road’s. Keen to get to camp we planned a quick lunch stop, which took over 45 minutes to buy a couple bottles of water (TIA). A couple hours later pulled into our roadside camp spot for the night, in time to whip up some spag bol for dinner. Saturday Up and at em, we hit the road right on 7am along surprisingly good roads. We stopped to buy some fresh cashews and made another quick road side with lunch everyone keen to get to Vilankolos. We arrived at Vilunkalos a small African ... read more
