Day 30 The Journey to Cambodia (Siem Reap) Up and managed to have breaky in time for our boat departure's from Mr. Mo's. We crossed the border hassle free and arrived at Stung Treng where they advised us we were not able to go as there weren't enough people and we would have to stay there the night. After much debating and utter defiance towards staying a night, two hours later they finally agreed to providing a mini bus at an extra $6 each if we all agreed to go to Phenon Penh. So to Phenon Penh it was. A long [View Full Entry]

Day 28 The journey to Don Det Leaving it just a little too late to comfortably get breaky in as usual, we had it thrown into plastic bags as we jumped on a tuk tuk(15k) heading to the ferry, only to wait there for another 15minutes before it left. We got the ferry across as it started bucketing down rain, our tuktuk then dropped us off at the local bus stop which provided some shelter as we waited ... for the local bus (40k) (an experience in itself). Filled with local's and what ever they need to transport with them, one [View Full Entry]

Pakse and Champasak

 Asia » Laos » South » Pakxe
Day 26 We arrived in Pakse after as good of sleep one could expect on a bus at 6.30am only to be bombarded by 10 people demanding to take us somewhere! We eventually jumped on a tuk tuk (apprehensively) with another 8 people and headed for Sabaidy Guesthouse only to find it full. Not keen on waiting around for people to check out Jez went exploring whilst Carly minded the bags, and we ended up settling at Nasin... Hotel- big stark and generally ugly but relatively cheap. After a quick kip that turned into a couple hours we dragged ourself out [View Full Entry]

Day 23 After waking roasting in our oven/cell, to find no water we hit the road in search of a new guesthouse, fortunately Mixay had a room and following the cell we were in luxury with a big room, own bathroom (with hot water) and 3 huge windows overlooking the city! We hired some bikes and went exploring.. First stop the market for Carly to replace her sunnies from the misadventure tubing- hot $12 Diors that we got tired of haggling for but would do the job. We arrived back at our bikes only to realise Jez had lost the key [View Full Entry]

Day18- Luang Prabang Refreshed after our early night we headed out in search of a Lonely Planet of Laos feeling out South east Asia one wasn't cutting it and then headed off on the Walking Tour. First stop was Big Brother Mouse a company set up to publish and distribute books to young Laos children to help them learn to read and write. Feeling that was a worthwhile way to help this incredibly poor country productively ( As there's heaps of children begging and apparently many of the children begging spend then money on drugs and not food!) we purchased a [View Full Entry]

Day 22 Kayaking to Vientiane from Vang Vieng After a quite evening we rose early ready to hit the rapids with our Irish mates Carl and Martha. After a couple hour tuk tuk ride we arrived a our lauching point on the Nam Lik River. Following some very brief kayaking instructions is was afterall only our first time we boarded our two man kayak and set off. After some zig zagging down the river we finally got the hang of it before being beakoned to the side of the river for more instructions. We climbed up 7m above river level to [View Full Entry]

Vang Vieng

 Asia » Laos » North
Day 20- The bus to Vang Vieng Warned that this was a 'hairy trip' by some fellow Aussies we loaded up on some Kwell before changing mini bus three times and finally setting off. The five or so hour trip was windy but very scenic, with a couple pit stops for necessities such a pringles! The four of us searched the town for cheap but clean rooms and funnily ended back where we started at Thavisouk Guest House. We headed out for lunch guided by the lonely planet to Nokeo and Jez who was adamant to avoid every 'Friends" bar/cafe. Where [View Full Entry]

Day 12 After a fairly boring couple of days we were pumped for the Gibbon experience! A rarely advertised three day trek aimed at preserving the jungle but allowing high paying tourists to visit it without destroying it. We'd been lucky enough to hear about it through Mark and Chrissie whom we meet in China (thanks guys!). We set off with four packed into the cabin and another four in the back. A very bumpy but scenic 2 hours we arrived at a small village laden pigs, chicks, kids and with two finished groups desperate for beers and raving about their [View Full Entry]

Day 11 Back to school, Thai cooking class. We enrolled in what can be defined as the ducks guts of cooking schools, in thai terms it was an expensive day but in the end extremely filling. After a short stop at the market to pick up supplies we got stuck into the cooking in a group of around twenty. We made 7 dishes for the day, chicken and cashew, pork with basil, yellow potato curry, Curried steamed fish, prawn spicy sald, noodles and a banana and coconut desert . After eating the first two meals we rued the decision to eat [View Full Entry]

Day 8 Up early for our trek to the jungle, we had brekky at what had become our Changmai regular and packed small packs for our three days away. We decided that we'd had enough water fighting and to go on our trek a day early thinking we were leaving the chaos of Changmai behind. Little did we know at this stage the country folk like to continue to celebrate Songkran for weeks on end, making our journey to the jungle a memorable and wet one. Six of us piled into the back of the jeep, another 2 in the cabin [View Full Entry]
