After a long, tiring day’s travel from New Zealand we arrived in Cairns, Northern Queensland. This was the first time either of us had been to Australia so we were keen to explore the country and its culture. The first difference that we noticed from NZ was that the temperature was considerably higher. In NZ it had fluctuated wildly from high 20s degrees C to hailstones and biting winds. In Cairns it was still, balmy and warm. Later, we quantified this as a high of 32C daily with biting cold nights of 24C! (Ha Ha, we hope you are all enjoying November in the UK!) We had booked a couple of nights in a Lonely Planet recommended hostel and were taken there by a skinny, unintelligible taxi driver with long, unfashionable, New Zealand hair. It ... read more

Day 34, 15/10/11 Today I had a lovely lay in and woke up not knowing what to do for the next few weeks. I have decided I plan to reach Cairns asap, hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks. That way I will have finished everything I have booked so far and I can stop for a month or so to work before heading south (probably Melbourne) for Christmas. That's the plan anyway but they seem to change quite a lot when your here. I am heading off to Airlie Beach today with a one night stop off at a town called 1770 just to break up the 17 hour coach journey. Once at Airlie Beach we will do The Whitsunday Islands. After I was all set on my plans we headed for the beach in the ... read more

Day 30, 11/10/11 First things first, text Dad a Happy Birthday! Got the Greyhound and made our way to Rainbow Beach. The hostel was okay and as part of my booking for Fraser Island I got a free meal and 2 drinks worth over $20 - Bargain! Had to have a safety chat about Fraser Island and driving over there on the sand - turns out you have to be 21 to drive over there so I was a passenger. Went for a free organized bush walk to a sand-blow and saw the sunset before coming back to hostel for dinner and socializing with the OzIntro lot who we met here who are traveling south.... read more

So after staying in Alice Springs for a week I headed back to Brisbane with the intention of staying for two days..... This turned into a week as soon as I heard about the Riverfire festival happening on the next Saturday. This is part of the Brisbane festival and there are fireworks set along the river and from the tops of the tallest buildings along the river. It was well to be expected :D Between landing in Brisbane and leaving I didn't really have a lot to do. I met a group of nice English guys and girls who were working and staying at the hostel. I had brought a guitar in Alice and we spent most of the time playing with it. One day I did visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary with Matthew (a boy ... read more

We have been lucky with the weather .. while it was raining down south, we have had quite good weather. We had five nights at beautiful Agnes Water, a place we always enjoy .. lovely beach, good campside, a pleasant coffee shop on site, and within walking distance to the shops. The last couple of days a wind came up which was unpleasant but we spent our time chatting to the friendly campers there and generally being lazy. We found that one couple who we were talking to, just looking, and unable to get into the campsite this time, were from the street above us at home .. another 'small world' event this trip. We turned around and started for home once we'd left Agnes Water, wishing we could keep heading north. We had a night ... read more

We have finally started our big trip around OZ. Left Mum and Dad's on friday morning and set up camp at Inskip Point, Rainbow Beach for 2 nights. We were joined by the Gray family (Matt, Ruth, Tayla & Mischa). Heavy rain storm tested our set up on the second night but woke up to a beautiful sunny day today to pack up and move on to our next stop. Paradise Dam near Biggenden. Sad to say goodbye to Matt and Ruth...we will miss you! We have no photo's to upload as yet...small drama in the rain on saturday night when the water leaked into the powerboard that was charging our batteries. Will be buying new camera batteries soon.... read more

We travelled from Airlie Beach via the town of 1770 (which is soooo boring!!) before arriving in Rainbow Beach. Small town (again!) but quite nice to be able to chill out here as the last few weeks have been none stop drinking and partying!! We are staying in Rainbow beach before heading to Fraser Island to do a 3 day tour of self guided 4wd!! So exciting! After spending the next day on the beach before our briefing, we had another early night and got up early for our Fraser tour to behind! The tour is 8 cars, each with approx 7/8/9 people in each. We are Team A (of course!) with 7 people altogether! We headed for the ferry which took 10mins over to Fraser Island. Fraser is the worlds biggest sand island, literally nothing ... read more

21/10/10 - Rainbow Beach Got up and had breakfast and Bobby suggested we hire some bikes before our bus. We cycled to the Town of 1770 and on the way my chain came off and got stuck, luckily I had my man slave Bobby to fix it for me and get all greasy instead of me. We carried on to the lighthouse but found it wasn't the big one Bobby thought. Great views of the coast. We cycled back hust in time for the shuttle bus to take us to meet eh Oz bus. We caught the Oz bus and met our driver, Disco. He is a giggle and booked our accomodation for us. I had planned to stay in Hervey Bay originally but we decided to give it a miss as the only thing to ... read more
