I like Rainbow Beach very much. It is like a miniature version of Port Douglas without the heat and all the people. We spent the day investigate potential fishing sites, Inskip Point where the Fraser Island ferry leaves from, the shops and beaches. We also had a lovely lunch at Jilarty Café – good food and good value. I like Rainbow Waters Caravan Park a lot too. We are just a very short stroll to the waters edge in a lovely grassed area. There are enough trees around us to give a “bush” feel without worrying about trees falling on us. There are lots of birds around, including magpies, butcher birds, bush turkeys and kookaburras. Frank was hand feeding dried biscuits to a magpie. Yes, I know, not standard magpie food, be it seemed to have ... read more

Thank you, Simon. Despite his best efforts at getting us lost, we have indeed reached our destination. It took us three full days of driving, and I don't know how many kilometres, but here we are at Rainbow Beach. I don't know what it looks like because we arrived just as it was getting dark. We set up in the dark and made dinner. Tomorrow we will investigate and plan our time here. It was much more pleasant getting up this morning than it was yesterday. 11.4 degrees compared to -3.9 degrees, it was almost a heatwave! The day wasn't as sunny though, and we ran into a little rain new Gympie. The weather forecast is for a little rain every day for the week. Hopefully it won't interfere too much with our plans, whatever they ... read more

After our 7 hour bus journey we arrived at Rainbow beach around 3pm. It was red hot but luckily we got dropped off right outside our hostel, Frasers on Rainbow. It took a while to check in but when we did we met two girls from Essex in our room, Lucy and Millie, who both seemed pretty cool. We had a chat and then went by the pool, the girls were already really brown and it wasn't hard to see why because as me and Freeman dived in the pool they just lay next to it sunbathing, typical girls! In the afternoon we all had to gather in the bar to watch a safety briefing on Fraser Island for our tour the next day which was the most ridiculous and boring video ever, I struggled to ... read more

So while we were catching up with Uncle Jack and Lyndal at Tin Can Bay, we learnt that some good friends of Jacks, an interesting couple we had only met briefly many years ago at hometown Coraki, were on their way to Inskip Point, not far from Tin Can Bay. Laurie and Julie are serious travelers, who just love life on the road, and there aren't too many places in oz they havn't towed their Caravan through. So it was a great opportunity to meet up at Rainbow Beach and mosey on up to Inskip Point. We had heard a lot of good things about the "Point", but just hadn't driven that stretch of what we thought to be a serious sand road, that splits the spit of land that meanders right up (with sea on ... read more

Continuing south on our journey home, we had a rendezvouz with Uncle Jack and Lyndal in Tin Can Bay, yes we like it here. We are heading south, J & L are heading north to Mackay, to go out on son petes' 40 foot cruiser for a spot of reef fishing, lucky buggers. We set the meeting place at TCB yacht club, very classy, neither of us have a yacht, but who cares? We enjoyed coffee and cake at the dolphinarium, and casually enquired as to how Tin Can Bay got its unusual name, well there are two theories, one is, that in the early days the mail came by boat and was floated up river in a tin can, well thats' a bit of a stretch, the other theory, that we like is the local ... read more

O.k, this is our 8th blog from the Wide Bay region, which stretches from Rainbow Beach in the south, to Hervey Bay in the north and beyond. Why is it so?, you may ask, well I'm glad you did, although you may not remember asking. I don't mind telling. The truth is, its deep winter, and winter nights in the freedom machine, like most camping arrangements, are pretty much "Brass Monkey", if you get my drift. However, winter nights in The Tin Can, parked by Tin Can Bay, are usually, a balmy 15 degrees. Given that seaside resides, are normally warmer, than inland, and when you have the largest sand island in the world, sheltering you from the wild ocean stuff, its quite cosy. So to finish off our winter sojourn, in the area, I will ... read more

Every now, not so much then, we need to throw off the entanglements of crazy society. Strip away all the madness of machines, and just simply be. We left "Ranger Phil" and the party packers, at Rainbow Beach to sort out their stuff and decided it was time for a bush camp. Time for Bilbo and Basho to go feral, about 10 ks out of Rainbow Beach, the road climbed to a distant ridge. We spotted a great bush camp with lots of shrubbery to hide us from the road. Bush camps by nature can be scary at times, with wild animals, wild fires, wild people, its important to have an emergency evacuation plan, we found the perfect place, Bushwalker car park, just hidden from view, not too far from the road, a nice little place ... read more

We arrived in Rainbow Beach from Tin Can Bay, quaint little town, but right on the backpackers trail. The townies don't seem to like these "your not from around here, are you, types" infiltrating their little patch of tucked away paradise. We tried to do a spot of free camping by the ocean side park, but it looks like "Ranger Phil", is on the beat, and has harassed several van packers. Accordingly Gestapo Phil has slapped them with a goldcoast type fine for breaking hick town bylaws. These antisocial laws were probably passed in an out of session midnight council meeting, when topped up with the sauce council passed these draconian bylaws. The law states, you are not allowed to sleep in your car, any where in town, unless it is in backpacker alley. You guessed ... read more

Dear everybody Greetings from somewhere along the East-coast of the amazing country.. ( I am currently in the bus towards my new destination). I am doing very fine, still having good fun, enjoying the things that this country offers me and meeting awesome people along the road! Since my last update I went to Airlie Beach, from where I went on a sailingtrip around the Whitsundays. The weather was great and this was an awesome experience including awesome nature scenery, landscapes and animals, snorkeling and diving at the reef and living on the Apollo, a former racer! Some of the highlights., sailing at high speed, watching the sunset from the boat, party on board and this amazing beach, that deserved its name totally, white heaven beach (I so want to spent the night there one day, ... read more

So after getting on another bus that we had to pay for we arrived 4 hours later in Rainbow Beach at a hostel named Dingo's, straight away we put our stuff in our rooms which we were sharing with two irish girls who had already been to Fraser Island (the reason people go to rainbow beach as you get a short ferry over to it) and two other girls who were on our trip, Little Laura from Essex and Elizabeth a French-Canadian who were both absolute diamonds.....that night they showed why by cooking for pat & myself with us having to do nothing, it was brilliant. Later that night we all went for drinks in the bar which had games on to win more alcohol, so we obviously took part in every game as a dorm ... read more
