Just south of Landsborough, Queensland on the old Gympie road is Rocky Creek Scout camp. scattered throughout the 100 acres of pretty much virgin bush, are little hideaway bush camps, just great for Morningbird and Littleflower to tuck away from civilisation for a week, to go future primitive. In this idyllic bush paradise there is high evidence of ancient Aboriginal and colonial culture in this historic place, of human activity stretching back many moons. Nearby is a lush rainforest creek, with ancient aboriginal rock groovings etched in the rocks by the creek, These groovings in the rock are the result of stone tools being forged and sharpened by ancient hands. What a touch stone (pun intended) moment it was for us, to place our hands in these same ancient rock grooves as the ancient ones did ... read more

Revisited one of our favourite East Coast hangouts, Coochin Creek, Beerburrum State forest, 20 k south of Caloundra on the sunny coast of QLD. we love it for the creek by the bush, the creek is an Estuarine river, in a bushland riparian zone. We love the fish and the muddies, but on this visit, we met some absolutely wonderfully inspiring people. Those of you, who know us well, know that we are not big social butterflies, we like to be chameleons and blend insignificantly, into the camping populous. First up meet Steve and Talitha, who rocked up in a homemade customised camper trailer, they had been high renting a house for years, had enough, time to hit the road and for them, this was camp one. Steve the pragmatic one, had everything set up for serious ... read more

We left Tinny and the Rainbow, to head back to the Sunshine Coast, to freeload at LaBalsa Park for a few days. Pardon our ignorance, but we always like to check out the history and origins of the places we stay. La Balsa Park at Point Cartwright, has mega significance, in that it was the landing place for the Labalsa expedition. In 1970 a spaniard Vital Alsar led his three multinational companions on an incredible journey to demonstrate how ancient mariners could have sailed and emigrated to the pacific islands from the americas. To prove this theory, they sailed across the pacific in a balsa wood raft from South America to land at Mooloolabah. To commemorate this incredible adventure, the park was named after the expedition, the four journeymen had their footprints set in concrete, their ... read more

O.k, this is our 8th blog from the Wide Bay region, which stretches from Rainbow Beach in the south, to Hervey Bay in the north and beyond. Why is it so?, you may ask, well I'm glad you did, although you may not remember asking, I don't mind telling. The truth is, its deep winter, and winter nights in the freedom machine, like most camping arrangements, are pretty much "Brass Monkey", if you get my drift. However, winter nights in The Tin Can, parked by Tin Can Bay, are usually, a balmy 15 degrees. Given that seaside resides, are normally warmer, than inland, and when you have the largest sand island in the world, sheltering you from the wild ocean stuff, its quite cosy. So to finish off our winter sojourn, in the area, I will ... read more

Every now, not so much then, we need to throw off these entanglements of crazy society, strip away all the madness of machines, and simply be. We left ranger phil and the party packers, at Rainbow Beach to sort out their stuff and decided it was time for a bush camp, time for Bilbo and Basho to go feral. About 10 ks out of Rainbow Beach, as the road climbed to a distant ridge we spotted a great bush camp, with lots of shrubbery to hide us from the road, but not too far from the blacktop, a little place to hide away for a few days, we had stocked up with food, water and alcomahol. a clearing in the forest, possibly an old log dump site, with excellent distant water views overlooking Coloola Cove and ... read more

We arrived in Rainbow Beach from Tin Can Bay, quaint little town, but right on the backpackers trail and so the townies don't like these "your not from around here, are you, types" infiltrating their little patch of tucked away paradise. We tried to do a spot of free camping by the ocean side park, but it looks like ranger phil, is on the beat, and has harassed several van packers, slapped them with a goldcoast type fine for breaking hick town bylaws, anonymously passed in an out of session midnight council meeting when topped up with the sauce they passed these draconian bylaws, where you are not allowed to sleep in your car, any where in town, unless it is in backpacker alley. you guessed it, backpacker street is full of hostile hostels, where all ... read more

And so, our concluding blog on that amazing day on Fraser Island'K'gari, just moved literally into the twilight zone, we were about to encounter a truly mystical experience, incredibly captured on camera by Basho. Picking up from part two, As we were heading from the beach, enroute to the ferry we drove back into the forest for a quick stop at the Spirit Tree. Our guides informed us, that on several occasions, photographs of the Spirit Tree, have been taken, with supernatural phenomena. Many photos were taken by our party including Bilbo, but knowing Basho for the last 24 years, i have witnessed several unexplainable phenomena occur in her presence, such as the rare dolphin kiss experience at Tin Can Bay, which just had to be seen to be believed, have it on video, but unable ... read more

After driving through the magnificent forest and fresh water lakes, we emerged onto the eastern shoreline of Fraser Island, or K'gari to the Butchulla tribe, to tackle 70 miles of beach in a 4wd. Shortly after, we arrived at the Maheno wreck, which was a New Zealand passenger liner, converted to a 1st world war hospital ship, that was later purchased by japanese steel recyclers. Unfortunately enroute from N.Z to japan it was caught up in a severe cyclone that grounded it on the eastern shoreline in 1935, and there it has sat rusting away at the mercy of the elements for decades. Today it is an eerie sigh, as you approach from a distance, Bilbo tried to push it back out to sea, even had a Leonardo Decaprio "king of the world" moment, but there ... read more

Fraser Island has been on our bucket list for the past 15 years, we kept saying one day we will do it. Father time waits for no one and the years rolled by. Beautifully there comes a time in our precious given days when we grab the stuff of impulse and high adventure to find ourselves, up on the way on the open road, with magic at our fingers, such was this beautiful day when bilbo and basho drove to Hervey Bay, booked passage with Unique Fraser, a small but highly recommended little 4wd adventure company. Two fully loaded 4wds, packed with great driver guides, a beautiful indigenous guide "Nova", a deli of great food, bubbly, beer and much cheer from the touros of the day including bilbo and basho. Our 4wd's boarded the ferry at ... read more

Tin Can Bay, is off the southern edge of Fraser Island, and is a large horseshoe shaped bay, affording natural refuge for yachties, houseboats, fisherman and a friendly pod of dolphins that call the bay home. , Legend has it that a dolphin injured by a boat prop, was rescued and nursed back to health by a local villager in the 1950's, it returned with its pod every day at sunrise to thank and pay homage to the special lady that became its benefactor. Ever since, the progeny of that dolphin swim and parade at the same very place every morning around 7 oclock. As always some enterprising entrepreneur, smells a touro attraction, when they see one, and has set up shop, with tourist paraphenalia, restaurant/coffee shop, $5 dollar fish to feed dolphins and dolphinologists, miked up in ... read more
