30/11/06 - 01/12/06 Mission Beach We picked up a hire car (Toyota Avalon GSX Mk III, no less) and headed south. The guidebook says 2634 km Cairns to Sydney, for which we’d allowed 21 days. Our last night in Cairns we hot-footed it to Johno’s Blues Bar for some live music and although the headline act was far from blues, we did get chatty with a lady by the bar who told us that we absolutely must stop at the Sanctuary at Mission beach for a couple of days if we had time. Did we have time?... of course! What an absolutely amazing place! High up in the rainforest, the cabins look across forest and out to the ocean. The en-suite shower had glass walls so you can enjoy the same view as the balcony and ... read more

We did it! After two aborted attempts in Lake Taupo we finally jumped out of a plane at 14,000 ft, harnessed to a professional skydiver. Although its a little more expensive to skydive in Australia, you can pretty much guarantee that the weather is right for a skydive at Mission Beach, just south of Cairns. Due to the generous leaving present that I was given from my former colleagues at Breast Cancer Campaign, I was able to have this "you've gotta do it once in your lifetime" experience. Thanks guys. After a very short safety briefing, Tom and I were herded into a very pink, light aircraft, with our jumpmasters and another English guy who was diving out of an aeroplane for his second time. As I was the first in the aeroplane it also meant ... read more

Wed We had to be up early to catch the Oz Experience bus. Our driver is called Deisel (cause she put the wrong fuel in the tank!) and we are her first tour and following another bus. But it means there are only 10 of us on the bus so we can spread out. Our first stop was breakfast next to a bungy site- the only one in a rainforest. Karen and I did a Minjin swing which was like the Swoop in Rotorua. So much fun especially when atached to a friend. Could see all the way out to the Great Barier Reef from the top. Swimming in Lake Eachan was next, a rain filled crater. We saw some small turtles. Then a quick stop at a waterfall before watching some large crocodiles being fed, ... read more

I'd scheduled a modest agenda for Mission Beach that included white-water rafting, a skydive, and cassowary-spotting. I'd elected to stay at The Sanctuary, an eco-resort offering shared huts with green mesh walls as accommodation, set in acres of rainforest. It wasn't the most convenient location, with the twice-daily shuttle being the only practicable option for getting to Mission Beach itself, and the complex was set on a hillside, requiring much huffing and puffing in the steamy atmosphere to get from A to B, but it was extremely relaxing, partly due to the environment and partly due to the friendly and laid-back staff. My main reason for staying there was in the hope of seeing a cassowary in the wild. With the roads in the area having probably more cassowary warning signs than anything to do with ... read more

Mission Beach and the aftermath of Cyclone Larry When we left Cairns on 11th of July (yes there’s lots more Blog entries to come) we headed south on the coast road to Mission Beach. Unfortunately for us, it virtually rained all the time we were there. It’s a small township with a long lovely beach that regularly gets hit in the cyclone season; evidence of Cyclone Larry was obvious. We took a trip in the water taxi over to Dunk Island, again it rained and you have to walk into the sea to get in the boat, not much fun for short people like me! Cassowaries inhabit the area and we got the message about not hitting these endangered species. We had in fact already seen 5 of these weird looking prehistoric birds in Cape Tribulation, ... read more

We stopped off in Mission Beach on our way from Magnetic Island to Cairns. It was a beautiful beach and we had a lovely couple of days relaxing in between the rain. Mission Beach is a recommended stop if your wishing for a bit of R'n'R as the beach does not have very many people and everyone is pretty chilled there. I (J) quite like beach (see picts)!?! Next Stop was Cairns. I(H) have to say at times I didn't think we were going to get this far because we seamed to find so much to do on the east coast. I'm (J) surprised our van made it, only another million k's to go! We spent a couple of days chilling out and taking stock of what we wanted to do next. We booked loads of ... read more

Laura and i have split up- boo hoo and have now gone our separate ways. She's off to find work in Sydney and i'm going to party on down the east coast for a few weeks and generally be a travelling bum. On my way down on the greyhound bus i met Lizzie, a 20 year old nurse from Cheshire and we booked a white water rafting day on the Tully River which has Grade 4 Rapids. Grade 4 is pretty scary rapids!! Met sisters Amy & Lauren and turns out they're also doing the rafting day so had dinner with them and chatted about how scary it would be. Also on our raft was Ryan, an incredibly enthusiastic canadian and Owen, a very weird Kiwi bloke who couldn't be bothered paddling most of the time! ... read more

Our next stop, after Kathy had returned from her (calm, relaxing) sailing trip on a tall ship, was Townsville. On the way there we passed through a little town called Ayr and I thought of all of you north of the border - although the two towns look v.different! Townsville is the 3rd biggest city in Queensland but there isn't that much to do there and we were using it more as a jumping off point for Magnetic Island. We spent one night in Townsville and spent the afternoon exploring the town and then had dinner in a cute little (cheap) irish pub.I think Kathy and I must be cursed because we had another situation of having phoned to book beds but they had no record of us - but we were lucky again and managed ... read more

Hi all, Thanks for the messages Ready and Andrew. Nice to get some news. We are all well and kicking back at Mission Beach for a few days. Staying in a council caravan park (just like at Rosebud foreshore), only $11 per night - cheapest we have struck. The weather has cleared and the days are warm, as is the water. I am off white water rafting on the Tully River tomorrow - should be a hoot! Recently stayed at some top national parks. Bowling Green Bay out of Townsville and Jourama Falls. We had a good walk down into Wallaman Falls, longest drop in Australia - spectacular. Ian & Sean - had a stop over at Cardwell - couldn't face the pub. I checked with the pizza guy at Mission Beach but he couldn't find ... read more
