On our way back from Port Douglas we spend one night in Cairns (where i buy a new camera and the guy undercharges me for it - winner!) we head down to Mission Beach. We get our first Greyhound bus of the trip - with many more still to come, we're gettingthe coach allthe way down to Melbourne!!! We make friends with a londoner called Neil on the bus - he's very amusing! Now the reason for us coming down to Mission Beach was so that i could do my skydive and thats why the blogis entitled mission impossible! Impossible because the jump got cancelled twice, boo hiss! After getting up at the crack of dawn and waiting for the company to pick me up, they instead phone me and inform me that its been cancelled due ... read more

We drove to Cairns today on our last Greyhound journey. I thought the highlight was going to be the choice of movie(Dirty Dancing - finally something decent) but around the Mission Beach area the driver slowed down as he had spotted a Cassowary walking along the side of the rode. For those that don't know this bird, it is flightless and looks similar to an emu but has a red face, blue neck and a strange flat horn on its head. They are pretty rare so we were lucky to get such a good view. We'd barely had time to get back into the movie when the driver spotted a second Cassowary, this time crossing the rode right in front of us. Unforutunately I couldn't get a photo but we all got a good look. Another ... read more

Well after Magnetic Island i headed to Mission beach for two days of complete relaxation. This is exactly what i got as i literally didnt leave the hostel all i ended up doing was lazing around in a hammock reading my book and then at night playing board games and chess and reading my book with the other people in the hostel. I was staying in the Tree House YHA hostel and it was very quirky and a nice escape from the drinking and partying culture of the east coast. Firstly it had no tv and so everyone at night wasnt crowded around a tv not socialising but everyone was sat around playing monopoly, or risk or chess and it was just very relaxed and friendly. Then in the corner a cd player played chilled ... read more

After a 3 hour journey on the Greyhound bus (which I would become very familiar with over the coming weeks) we arrived in Mission Beach where we checked into the Beach Shack, which was basically a large converted house right on the beach front. The weather wasn't great but we went for a stroll along the beach with a Swiss guy we met called Norbert (Jon Dunne lookalike). We had a pretty chilled out night in the small town's only bar, entering a pool comp which we sadly didn't win. Most backpackers only stay in Mission Beach for a night as it's quite quiet, and we were no different, so the next day we continued on our Greyhound bound for Townsville and Magnetic Island.... read more

After another 9 hours on the bus yesterday, i am slowly but surely making my way up to North Queensland and the first stop along the way to Cairns is Mission Beach. Mission Beach is known for its Cassowary Birds (they look a bit like an Emu, get to be about 4 feet tall, cannot fly, are super fast, and are native to the rainforest around Mission Beach). The landscape around Mission Beach and the surrounding area is dominated by banana orchards , sugar cane fields, the ocean on the right side, and the rainforest on the left as we are driving up the coast. Since the rainforest dominates the landscape, i thought it only to be fitting to spend the night in a "treehouse" in the jungle, and since the YHA has a hostel up ... read more

It is said that there is nothing to do in Mission Beach except use it as a base for White Water Rafting and Sky Diving! This is pretty much true! We did struggle to fill our remaining day there! HOWEVER, in my opinion Mission Beach should become renowned for the Best Hostel in Australia, The Beach Shack! In my whole time in Australia I have not been to a cleaner, homlier, nicer hostel! It was fantastic! The owner told me she set out to make a home away from home, where travellers could feel safe and just enjoy there time! And she manages it! So to all you travellers out there - head that way! Aside from that though, we did as expected and did our White Water Rafting from there and man was it fantastic! ... read more

Leaving Cairns Once upon shore we did what all respectable backpackers would do in Cairns and had yet another dinner at the Woolshed. Those familiar with Cairns need no further comment, those who have not experienced the free/cheap-ness of hostel dinners at the Woolshed can only begin to imagine. Though if you think of school dinners that are actually edible, served with beer/cider, you'll come close! Our Open Water group then met up with the rest of the Pro Dive crew at the pub to have a drink. There was some more drinking to be had further down the road, and Dave can't remember much after that and Saz has deemed it best not to remind him... But a good time was had by all it seems! Which, unfortunately, can not be said for the next ... read more
