We purchased a hop on hop off bus pass in Cairns that would take us down the East Coast back to Sydney. We jumped on the bus early last Saturday morning and headed 'down the Highway' to Mission Beach. We were picked up by our hostel at the bus stop and spent the next few days relaxing in Mission Beach at Scotty's Beach House, the best hostel we've been to so far. It was so relaxing, the staff were friendly and they even carried my bag to my room for me. There was an amazing pool with a log across the middle that you can battle your opponent with inflatable noodles, so i spent the next fews days messing around in the pool knocking Gaz off the log and playing volleyball. Cassawarries are about 6ft tall ... read more

Travelled from Cairns to Mission Beach (27th Jan). The Greyhound was very hot when we got on it and didn't cool down until we drove into some wet weather. We watched a trashy film ("Wynn Dixie" anyone?) but still it was something to do for the 2 and half hour journey. We stayed at The Sanctuary, set up in the rainforest. We had to get the owners to pick us up from the Greyhound stop and take us by 4WD...even so, I really don't know how any vehicle manages to deal with the steep, muddy inclines this thing took us up! Here we had our own little jungle hut with wall to wall rainforest views (the walls of the hut were actually made from mesh so that you could see out into the rainforest.) The courtesy ... read more

Hey guys, We thought a few of you might be getting a bit fed up through the cold dreary winter so we have devised a few balances for you to try and master!!!! Good luck you can do it!!!! Also included a few pics of Barbara the Cassawary. They are a bit like emus really. There is only 2 who frequent our area as they are very territorial (look at my extensive knowledge of cassawaries!) . There was a cyclone here last year called Cyclone Larry which killed about 10 of them so now part of our job at the mo is to leave food at their feeding station so that they survive. We have to leave it every few days and leave differing amounts so they don't become to reliant on it. The only thing ... read more

We headed up to Cairns to start the East Coast part of our trip back down to Sydney on the 23rd and walking out of the airport we were hit by glorious humid heat. 'Great, this is what i have been waiting for' i say to Gaz as we wait for our free airport transfer to our hostel in Cairns. It had been pretty poor weather down south and even though it is the rainy season at the mo and i have been sweating since i stepped off the plane i love it. The atmosphere is so much more relaxed in this part of Australia and i had a good feeling that i was going to enjoy my last few weeeks in Oz before heading back to Thailand. Cairns Is a great city and much cheaper ... read more

We stayed in the best hostel ever. It's called Beach Shack and is in Mission Beach. It's more like a home than a hostel. It's quite small, only about 30 people, and is family run. There was a lounge with huge sofas and a big tv, duvets on the beds with 2 pillows, free tea and coffee. These things are total luxury after some of the hostels I've stayed in recently. A lovely girl from Belgium was helping run it whilst we were there, and to be honest she made it. We even had a girly night, she made popcorn and we took over the lounge and watched Dirty Dancing and other girly films, much to the boys disgust! Anyway, we decided to do white water rafting on the Tully River whilst we were there. Tully ... read more

We are working for our accom and food again. We're living in these funky mesh huts we have a 360 degree view of the rainforest!!! Yest we spent the day working on a track through the rainforest which nearly killed us in the heat!! Rich is doing alsorts of oddjobs and becoming a real jungle boy, I often see him galivanting around barefoot with his machete in hand clearing the paths. Only today he removed a ... read more

Hey again Well the alcohol problem thingh did kinda work... it has shot that blog up to equal bottom in the ratings... (the newest ones are always bottom fairly obviously really actually i lie... its not second bottom because i just looked at it to see where i was at last update) yer so, that has been some sort of a success and i didn't think its been that long since i did it last but, Becks given me hassle for not doing it in a week so, i figured i'd update you on my startling progress.. i figured that maybe some pictures would boost the ratings even further so, there should be a few added and they're pretty awesome i think any way So i went to fraser island .. it was pretty awesome.. its ... read more

Hi, I spent a couple days in the "Treehouse" a backpackers hostel neat Mission Beach. Right on the first day I met Jochen from Alt Wallmoden (Germany). We went on hiking directly. I can tell you hiking in Australia is much more exhausting than in Europe - its hotter, more humide and ... more insects. But its very interesting to see the local Flora and Fauna. So what can you do in Mission Beach... For sure you cant go swimming its Stinger Season (Quallen) That means you either swim behind a stinger net or wear a sexy stinger suite. Its a full body nylon suite... very tight. But you can go diving... sky diving. Vesna (Melbourne) did it here - so I thought give it a try. Skydiving isnt such an Adrenalin rush as exspected - ... read more
