Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I couldn't come to Australia and not see the Great Barrier Reef. I also couldn't come to the Great Barrier Reef and simply snorkel it. Scuba was the only way to go so, with some trepidation, I booked myself onto a 5 day course that would hopefully culminate in me being awarded PADI Open Water Certification - a licence to dive anywhere in the world to a depth of 18m. By choosing to go with a company called Pro-Dive in Cairns, I'd opted for possibly the most expensive operator and location possible, but Pro-Dive's reputation preceded them. They were also the [View Full Entry]

We've previously done the snorkelling and introductory diving, but you never really get a perspective of just how expansive the Reef is and how vivid the colours actually are on a good day. The scenic flight option for 45 minutes was without doubt $109 well spent. As it says on the Australian Tourist Board ads, with sights like this "Where the b***** h** are you"? We are off to NZ on Tuesday, where the temperature is current half that in TFNQ. [View Full Entry]

"Under the sea, under the sea. Down where it's wetter, that's where its better, take it from me..." OH MY GOD! I have just had THE most amazing, exciting, thrilling, nerve wracking, adrenaline filled 5 days and am now a certified open water diver :) The first 2 days were spent in at the training centre with half the day in the classroom learning all the theory and finding out how easy it was to die if we mucked up!The remainder was spent in the 4m deep pool getting used to using the equipment and doing skills like removing, replacing [View Full Entry]

This week Laura and I did a 5 day open water scuba dive course and it was fantastic fun. i am now PADI certified to dive to 18metres - pretty scary huh?! The first 2 days were spent in a classroom and a swimming pool and getting to know the rest of the group. there were 19 of us learning and we all managed to pass the final exam on day 2 before heading to our boat on day 3. We headed out to the reef - it was a bit choppy and there were a few people being sick but [View Full Entry]

Diving - Laura's experience: I love swimming, I love snorkelling, so it seemed logical to assume I'd take to scuba diving like the proverbial fish to water. Signing up for a 5 day PADI course was the main reason we went to Cairns in the first place, although we had to wait several days to get spaces on the ProDive course we wanted. Having both passed the medicals, although with reservations from the doctor due to Luke's propensity for nose bleeds, we spent the first few days in a mix of classroom and pool based training. The theory parts were easy [View Full Entry]

elo elo. So i have just recently returned from 3 days on the GBR(great barrier reef). My head is still slowly rocking as i have not gotten acustom to being on solid ground. The trip out there was somewhat rough...and being aware of my sickness, i downed some yummy motion sickness pills. LAra, knowing she was a toughie, and making fun of me for being a wimpy...took none. Sadly, Lara did the technicolor yawn over the side of the boat, feeding all the fishes her half-digested breakfast. She thought the main reason for her upchuck was karma...so she will no longer [View Full Entry]
