Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Had an excellent night sleep. Helped by everyone else having gone to bed at 11:00. Out of respect I packed my stuff and left the room as quietly as possible unlike a couple of days ago where I made as much noise as possible to teach the B*#st*#ds a lesson (didnt leave until I heard at least a couple of "huffs" of discontent). got picked up outside the hostel and then got driven down to the boat. Had a nice big group doing the trip out to the great barrier reef. I was only originally down to do some snorkelling [View Full Entry]

... bent me! We had a great time on the Undersea Explorer, we saw sharks, beautiful underwater sceneries and we had delicious food and I finished my Advanced open water diver certificate. but... ... on Thursday, after my first dive, my face felt numb. A snorkelling and a little sleep later it was still there. Numb skin on the left side, next to the nose and on the forehead. It was lunchtime then. Because I just have learned about decompression illness and the symptoms I told my very nice dive instructor Claire. She told me to lay down on the [View Full Entry]

Hi! From 21st until 26th of April we had a few wonderful days onboard of the "Undersea Explorer", a diving and exploring ship, leaving from Port Douglas. We left at 7.30 pm and had a night drive to the Ribbon Reef. Although the sea was not too rough, we both felt a little strange in the movements of the boat. We had our first check dive at Pixies Garden, where we got used to diving again. The variety of things to see increased from dive to dive. Some "Potato Cods", which are around 2 m big, almost kissed us. In [View Full Entry]

Upolu Cay
a fantastic snorkelling experience
Today we took the Oceanic boat day cruise to explore the Great Barrier Reef. Wearing stinger suits we went snorkelling in Coral Bay and took the glass bottomed boat to Upolu Cay. This is a tiny area of white sand beach in the middle of the Coral sea, where we saw an amazing array of tropical fish of all sizes and colours. We also saw lots of jelly fish and a stingray, so we knew we were not accompanied by the most friendly species. In Upolu Cay the water were very shallow so we got extremely close to the various Nemos [View Full Entry]

After sifting through the millions of available dive charters, we found a company who did a day trip to the outer Barrier Reef which was currently on special! Once aboard the stylish catermaran (sp?) we shot off the coast from Port Douglas to the Agincourt reefs. It took one hour of being thrust up, down, side to side before we arrived for our first dive. The boat anchored and our group jumped off the side of the boat and commenced our dive. The bommie of coral was grey and dull toned- I immediately began to appreciate the good fortune of [View Full Entry]

Tristan's final briefing on how to navigate our way to the pub and the beer limits!
Our last day on the GBR - a sad day. However, we had an early start with a 6:00am dive briefing and then the dive itself. Saw a shark and turtle - possibly two of each (or the same one twice!). Our second dive was ok - a poor start but the dive got better and better - the GBR is really amazing! And often the best sights are closer to the top, so the guys who snorkelled probably saw just as many amazing sights. Our final dive was great as it ended as we began - with a shark! There was no stopping us on Day 2 on the GBR!
We were up early ready for our first dive (7:00am) - what a great way to start the day. The sun was shining, Crowded House on the radio and the aquatic life was great!!! The dives just got better and better during the day (and night). Three dives in the day and one that evening (for me) saw our dives and time on the GBR increase. As I was a bit pink, we played cards with some new friends - Liz, Ian, Ted and Becky - below deck in the afternoon, waiting for our surface interval time to pass. The night [View Full Entry]

Happy Valentines Day to everyone - it's not celebrated here as much as at home which is a good thing seen as we didn't get each other a card and we are spending such a romantic night on a Greyhound bus tonight!! Had an amazing day today as we went out on a trip to the Great Barrier Reef for some snorkelling. We set off at 8am on 'Ocean Freedom' and whilst we ate the free breakfast provided on the boat, we travelled about 30km out to sea where the Reef is. On our way Steve spotted a box jellyfish, one [View Full Entry]

Our home for three days on the GBR
I'd recommend Diving Cairns to anyone looking to go diving from Cairns. we ended up choosing a three day liveaborad with ProDive Cairns and it was FANTASTIC! We didn't have the best of starts as we weren't picked up (following confusion as to where we were staying) however, the day quickly got much better! There were 32 of us plus crew on the boat and we had the opportunity to do four dives today. Sars and I only did three but they were amazing. On the first dive we say a White Tipped [View Full Entry]
