Noosaville was a nice, quiet place. We went to the Australia Zoo - this is a zoo owned by Steve Irwin (the 'Crocodile Hunter'). He was not there but it was interesting anyway. In addition to crocodiles they had birds, kangaroos, koala, wombats etc. Mostly native Australian animals, although they have a new section with tigers, elephants etc. After Noosaville was Brisbane. We stayed there for four days. It was nice to be in a 'real' city rather than just touristy places. We looked around the city a lot, did some shopping, went to the cinema etc. We also went to some tourist places like a museum. Next we went to Surfers Paradise. This is a place where lots of Australians go to the beach. It has a lot of large hotels and appartment buildings. It ... read more

I have never spent Christmas away from home and was slightly apprehensive about how I would take to it. I wasn’t sure how I would feel for surf to substitute snow (not that I actually surf) and for Barbie to take the place of Turkey. However I am pleased to report that I coped with the adjustment admirably and indeed embraced it, but to be honest it just didn't feel like Christmas. When my friends at the hostel were in tears opening their Christmas parcels and messages from their parents and family, I was sort of looking on in bewilderment. Admittedly this was due in part to me being Christmas Parcel-less, mine didn't arrive until January 8 and as all the parcels were handed out by the hostel on Christmas day I had to just sit ... read more

I found my own little wonderland today. At 10 am I set out for the train complete with picnic...cheese and salad sandwiches...and jumped on the 2hour train to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains...very beautiful From the station its a hike along the road, maybe 1.5miles, to Echo point....tourist central. almost got photographed by all the oriental coach tours but managed to slip off down a trail and found myself alone...The trails and bush walks lead all the way round a huge sandstone valley, with cliffs and waterfalls and lookouts. Every now and then there would be another couple of people armed with their cameras but mostly I had the trail to myself. The sun was shining but it was a little hazy. Had my picnic at a secluded little lookout with spectacular panoramas. will get the ... read more

A horrendous hangover saw me and the boy wonder (Adam), trudge down to Central station at ridiculous-o'clock in the afternoon, I say ridiculous because the aim was to get out of Sydney as early as possible to get the train up to the Blue Mountains and get in two full days of bushwalking, but the Beer Monkey had other ideas and had obviously drugged us the night before and been jumping up and down on our heads as we slept. With our loaded backpacks, and thumping headaches and the standard hangover panacea - McDonalds - we journeyed up to Katoomba. In usual fashion, we had no idea where we were going, other than a train station, but I'm starting to learn that flying by the seat of your pants isn't always destined for failure, and sure ... read more

Yesterday, trolling the web trying to find the "West Australian" article published a few weeks ago, I came across an article written by David Flint on the Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy website. In it he attacked me as an "elderly" man who was trying to act young by using the word "like". I was stunned by the personal nature of the attack. As for "elderly", I dare say in the Twenty First Century, sixty years is hardly considered old by anyone. All this seems to reflect more on Mr. Flint's lack of touch with contemporary language and life than anything else. Like, get with the program Davo. Of course we all know he's stuck in the Nineteenth or is it Eighteenth Century? 17th? Not to worry. The monarchist minority can attack me all they like. ... read more

Well i am writing to you on my 3rd day in Sydney and i can say it has been all good but very tiring!!!! Anyway here is how our last few days went in wonderful Mellbourne. Last sunday we visited Werribe Zoo which Helen took us to with Rob which was about a half hour journey by car. It was more of an african zoo than an Australian zoo to be honest but it was still highly enjoyable. While we were there we took the Safari tour around the park which was really good we got a chance to drive past all the animals and get right up close to all of them which was a great experience. After we completed the Safari we set off to the otherside of the park to see the lions, ... read more

Hoorah! Orla has arrived in Sydney and we have hardly stopped for breath in between catching up and wandering round this fine city. We have been staying with friends/ex-colleagues of hers in Pyrmont, very close to Darling Harbour, and we have been out living it up in true Sydney fashion. Drinks at the outside Opera Bar on Friday evening mixing with the great and the beautiful after work (Opera House/Sydney Harbour and Bridge as backdrop; rather spectacular as the sun goes down); food in The Rocks - Sydney's colonial corner: you feel like you are back in the 1790s, and expect groups of convicts to wander round the corner at any moment; more drinks and food in Darling Harbour in the evening over the weekend and hanging out at Bondi and Manly Beaches during the day. ... read more

Sue and I decided to hit the market today. Paddy's is HUGE and has everything....silly wigs, nic-nacs and loads of junk, clothes, toys, souvenirs and an unbelievably cheap food market....potatoes and apples litterally 20cents each!! and we bought tea...cheesey jacket potatoes with salad, enough salad for bout 8 people....so cheese and salad sandwichs tomorrow I think! Anyone see the Liverpool Man U match? I did....in an Irish bar called P.J.O'Briens!!! fabulous pub...sold pints...full pints not these pathetic schooners! And it was full of Irish Liverpool supporters....all in all it was a funny evening. Had a laugh in the Irish club too...St Patrick's (Paddy's) Tavern! A young irish lad called Kenny and I decided that at 4am the best place to be would be the opera house...sunrise and all that. so spent 2/3 hours sat looking at ... read more
