Hello World... Welcome to the first of my historical travel journals, and greetings from my home town Sydney. The date of this journal is the very day I boarded a flight to San Francisco for my first overseas trip, following an emotional farewell with family and friends. I had recently graduated from university, and was working two jobs while squirrelling money away in the bank to prepare for an extended trip overseas. Finally the big day arrived and it was time to pack up my troubles in the old kit bag, in preparation for a first ever overseas flight to discover the joys of world travel! Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney were the first stops in Australia on Valene's 1964 South Pacific trip. I'm afraid I have few memories of the large cities of Australia, aside from the Shrine of Remembrance (War Memorial) in Melbourne, a scenic overlook of Canberra and visit to the Australian parliament building there and Sydney with the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, then under construction. In Sydney, we went on a sightseeing drive around the city and visited a local department store, David Jones.The local guide said the happening area of Sydney was the King’s Cross district. In Brisbane we met for a local orientation in a performance or dance pavilion. The local guide here expressed his disdain for rock music (a band was setting up to rehearse) and those who had imported Chevrolet Corvettes.... read more

In mid-1964, when I was nine years old, my parents took me out of school for five months and we travelled to Europe. I managed to keep a diary for the first part of the trip, but it seems that this eventually became a bit too much of a chore, and the diary entries run out after a few weeks. I've copied those that I did make in italics into the blog. My parents weren't really photographers, so photos of this epic journey are a bit scarce and limited to those taken by others, or my own efforts with a Kodak Box Brownie black and white camera - an icon in its day.
