Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Today I get to move into the house that I’ll be living in for the next 4.5 months. I’m up currently at 7:30 waiting to head out to the university to sign my lease and get my keys. I was told last night that the internet companies pretty much only have contracts for 2 years. Sean said that usually the landlord contracts with the internet company, then the tenant pays the cost of the service during their stay. However, the Uni has already told me that Internet is not included…I hope that doesn’t meant I’ll need to buy a antenna from [View Full Entry]

After Cairns The flight back to Sydney was a strange event being alone but I soon arrived back to my beloved Coogee and met up with Lizz, who had kindly offered her room for me to stay in. Straight away we got dressed and headed out for our Tuesday night at the Gaff!! It felt even stranger when we saw all the OzIntro staff out but we had a good night with our dancing and drinking lots of jagerbombs! Over the next few days, Lizz and I just chilled out and I got to meet her new housemates: Sian, Lindsay, Niki, [View Full Entry]

G'day all - this is just a really quick post to put up some photos of where we are living at the moment. We have found a fantastic place in the eastern suburbs of Sydney at Coogee Beach. For those who don't know Sydney it's about 10 mins drive to the city and about 5 mins in the car to the famous Bondi Beach. Coogee itself is a pretty sheltered beach so there's no big waves, but another five minutes south is Maroubra Beach which gets some great surf. There's quite a few cafes and restaurants around and we have a [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone Its about 9.10 in the evening here at the moment. Sorry for the delay in updates but its been pretty hectic since we arrived here! For startes the flight was delayed coming into Bangkok beacuse of the snow in the UK( lucky buggars, the one time we leave the country you get the best snow for years, typical). Once we finally we borded the plane, we had to wait around again as a child and their family where removed because they had a fever! so in total I think we where around 2 n half hours delayed. On Christmas Eve
Christmas in Sydney; we’ve made it to the “Land Down Under”! 25th December 2008 Christmas Day! And we’re not having Vegemite sandwiches! We’re off to Coogee Beach for a Christmas picnic lunch with Sue and Eric (my cousin). Arrived here on Tuesday evening 23rd December and guess what? It was RAINING, and only about 22 degrees. Maybe the unseasonable weather has followed us from New Zealand? Whatever, it was nice because we thought that it would be uncomfortably hot and humid, as indeed it was here earlier in the month, and it would have been like [View Full Entry]

Good day mates, Hope you're all well. We are missing all our friends and family really bad already. Well we arrived in Sydney at 7am this morning. The initial plane journey to Seoul, South Korea was about 9 hrs and 45 mins and was great. We had free peanuts/drinks and even the alcohol was free. Had loads of free movies on the touch-screen TV's we had in front of our seats. Seoul airport was spectacular...it was bloody enormous and so clean you could eat your grub off the floor (so I did). We didn't have to collect our luggage either it [View Full Entry]

Beach with a frame (for Ron)

So we have been in Coogee for just over nearly 3 weeks now, so we have been chilling out for the best part and exploring Sydney on the other days. There is lots to see and do here and we are having a great time. The beach is lovely and the weather is pretty hot most days. We took a ferry trip around the Sydney harbour, it was only an hour in total, but we had to get off early because poor Bella so so sick again. Bless her she was really brave, but I have to agree with her - [View Full Entry]

Almost at the end of my first week here and it's been amazing. I'll try and recount as best I can remember: The plane journey was 23.5 hours long, with a stop-over in Hong Kong for an hour. Its soooo long. fortunatly for the first half I was sat next to a lovely Aussie chick who spent the first hour describing in detail about all the dangerous stuff in Australia and about how I was probabley gonna die... was fantastic. The second half of the flight wasnt so good. An asian girl sat next to me and didnt respond when I [View Full Entry]
