Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hey ya'll from Sydney! Yes, from Sydney. We met two Sydney siders Alex Brazil & Alex Colombia at the reception of the hostel we were staying in Melbourne and had drinks with them at the Crown Casino and as we were driving back to the hostel Alex B invited us to come with them to Sydney and stay with him there. We thought about it for about 10 seconds and said "Sure, why not!". So the next morning we started at 8am to Sydney again and how we havent regretted it at all! We have had a blast here! Ok, so I FINALLY arrived in Sydney after what seemed a lifetime of flying and waiting around at 11am on Friday Morning. Some guy from OzIntro met us at the airport, and he drove us to our Hostel, which was in Coogee, which is about 20 minutes from the City Centre, and about 15 minutes from Bondi. When we first got to Sydney, I think we were all, suprisingly, abit disappointed. The reason for that was because it was just rain, rain, rain, and the place looked pretty dull! But thats just a first impression, so I reckon things will be [View Full Entry]

After a month of trekking around New Zealand’s South Island, we flew into the former convict colony Australia. Home to the world’s deadliest spiders, snakes and as we were to find out, lorry drivers. Sydney’s late spring greeted us with two days of rain, cloud and no sun. Luckily we were only there for a couple of days before flying out to Perth and a better climate. We flew on our first jumbo jet and Gemma was impressed that a plane could have stairs and was curious if we were seated in the upper section. The stewardess was obviously less impressed [View Full Entry]

**Journal written several days ago** Our final day of nearly two years in Oz has arrived. While the primary purpose of the Australian adventure was to do the post-grad thing, the best times were spent making new friends (wink, wink Rani) and exploring this great continent (and its diminutive, yet beautiful, neighbor to the east). Australia has an abundance of natural offerings to keep any avid outdoors (wo)man salivating. In our short time here we only got to see a bit (bloody work and Uni!) of the total, but it was all fantastic….driving in the Outback, Fraser Island, Great Ocean Ro [View Full Entry]

Okay... about that surf trip. ;) Shawn and I got up early and headed to Bondi Beach to be picked up (later learned they pick-up at Coogee Beach, as well). After breakfast at a sidewalk cafe, we waited outside Bondi Backpackers (a hostel). After waiting about 15 minutes, a guy came running up and asked if we were going on the surf trip -- we then followed him a few blocks, joined some other people in the van, and off we went. With the trip, they apparently determine which beach to go to each day depending on the waves and the [View Full Entry]

I arrived last Sunday morning after 24 hours in-transit -- from freezing temperatures to the mid-70s. After checking-in at the hotel, I quickly proceeded to go swimming and jogging along the coast from Coogee Beach toward Bondi. I got about halfway and jogged back. Along the way I passed a few women tanning topless. Lots of children and families around... doesn't look like a big deal here. After that I found out that the hotel did have a room available with an ocean view... so I switched rooms to one on the sixth floor with a straight on view of the [View Full Entry]
