Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Seems to be a common challenge around here. Tom landed a sweet job at a landscaping company. He starts early morning and ends about 2:30, its perfect [View Full Entry]

Good evening Everybody! Was erg mooi! Ben in de stad ook meer te weten gekomen over de geschiedenis van het land en de Aboriginals, zo kom ik toch wat dichter bij...om he [View Full Entry]

Its bin a while... The last month has been pretty busy...and a bit routine. Its getting a bit colder here. But I still think its warmer than Vancouver. You will probably only have one or two months of better weather than us. We have all gotten a cold at one point in the last month. Dan is a little sick rite now, but its not to serious. Work is pretty much the same story. The guys have all been working lots to save up for our trip we took to Cairns last weekend. Tom had a steady job through the [View Full Entry]

Hey all... Like usual, things in paradise have been very awesome... We have had three really packed weeks in a row. Three weekends ago we went to our first rugby game here in Sydney, it was really fun. We went with a bunch of our connect group guys. Games here are super cheap to go to compared to a hockey game back home. It is 20 bucks for a ticket here, and about 50 bucks for the best seats availiable. The game itself was really good, people later said it was one of the best games all year that we [View Full Entry]

After a long bus journey we made our way to bondi beach where Jade lives, i was expecting this place to be amazing after all the hype i heard but was a bit dissapointed as it didnt seem that great and the heavens had opened! We had a look around, attempted to do the bondi to coogee cliff top walk but went the wrong way ending up in the rain in the suburbs! Not a great day! Cheered ourselves up by meeting up with the Irish gang we'd met in Peru for some drinks, this is how we ended up [View Full Entry]

I have been lazier than ever this week, reading, bumming around on the beach, eating, and attending crab racing. Glebe does that to you. After a few days of fairly stormy wet weather the sun returned in force today and I hit Coogee Beach with Casey, my American friend from the hostel, and two mates. Last night was valentines and the only way to take shelter from the deluge of love letters was of course to go crab racing at the Friend In Hand pub with Casey, Breeana, Mark and Ben. I bet $3 on a crab which I named Ludovich [View Full Entry]

hello again... It has been a while since i have last posted. The main reason for that is because at our place, we are completely out of internet service. When we signed up for internet we signed up for a 200 mb per month plan, the guy at the store said that this would be plenty for us...however when we found out that our account was 4 times the limit in about 2 weeks, we had to cut it out for the rest of this month. Were not looking forward to the massive bill that we will be getting for this. [View Full Entry]

Day 2 of my adventure Down Under started off with me sleeping in (heavenly). Dave has taken the day off from work so we'll see what mischief we can get into... After I finally dragged my ass out of bed, we went down to Coogee Beach for breakfast. Breakfast by the beach is a big thing here and I must say that I could get used to the lifestyle. What better way to start your day than by having a coffee on a patio overlooking the ocean? We ran into some of Dave's friends (firefighters of course - lucky ole me!) [View Full Entry]
