We arrived in the city centre around mid day on Saturday (12th) and took our bags to the hotel before dropping off the hire car for the final time. We had driven just over 6000 KM in four different hire cars on our journeys in both counries. It's a good job that fuel is cheaper than in the UK. Once again we checked in to our hotel and immediately set off across the city to visit some of the prime locations. On our list was the botanic gardens once again, a place we never tire of. We have both agreed that Sydney botanic gardens is one of our favourite locations. The contrast in plants, the smells from the herb garden and the sights and noises from the variety of birds and fruit bats is just incredible. ... read more

So where did Shirley leave off? Ah thats it we were travelling on from Macquarie. Now we were very undecided what to do for our last day before getting back to Sydney so we set off with the Hunter Valley in mind and A drive through the wine growing district. This was very interesting but as I'm sure you will all realise looking at vineyards is not like sampling the output, so having spent the late morning and early afternoon in this area it was back to somewhere to stop and an evening meal and we chose Newcastle for this nights stop. Not the best choice we both agreed but it gave us a short journey the next day so that was it. Up early we set off and planned a stop at the Australian reptile ... read more

Hi Time for me again... What John ommitted to tell you in his last update was that around the red center there were thousands of bloody flies. Our guide informed us that there was three ways to protect our selves. !. Fly nets over our heads, mmm nice fashion accessory 2. Insect spray which he said they just licked off. 3. Cream that diguised your smell which all the locals used. We opted for the third way but what he ommitted to tell us was just how bad it smelt, we nearly cleared the coach when we applied it to ourselves, also that the rain washed it off, so we were back to square one... Back to my blog We left Sydney on Saturday which I didn't really want to do as I learnt it was the ... read more

Now for those who read the previous blog on Uluru I have some updates. It was pointed out to me that I had missed some very important information and that I should insert them at the begining of this entry. Now whilst we were at the rock and appeared to be suffering at the hands of the weather, we did in fact get sight of our first and only wild kangaroo, that is to say not behind a wire cage. Added to this we also seen a group of wild camels passing through the park. How I could of omitted this I do not know. In addition I also forgot to mention the drinks party as the sun set which was very enjoyable with ample supplies of wine and hor deuves. (thats french for snacks) Onward! ... read more

Well time to try to catch up I suppose. Lets begin with Adelaide. Not much to say really only that it was very hot at 35 degrees for the day and half that were there and that it is very much like all the other cities that we have visited so far. On the sunday we did take the tram to Glenelg which is a half hour ride to a suberb by the sea. A quite beautiful resort with a nice sandy beach not that we went swimming. The following day we set off for Alice Springs on a two hour flight. Now this was very different as it is as I'm sure that you know in the middle of the country and in a desert. The most notable thing for me was the forlorn looking ... read more

The Great Ocean Road was built between 1919 and 1932, it was built with the idea of constructing a road of great beauty. It was built as a memorial to the soldiers who had died in World War 1 and as an employnent scheme for those returning with the help of the unemployed during the depression. Well I was really looking forward to this part of our travels and we had allowed 2/3 days for the journey from Melbourne to Adelaide. On day one we had planned to reach Port Fairy for the nights stop, but instead only mangaged to reach Port Campbell which was not a great distance form Melbourne. I must take the responsibility for this, along with the Australian Highways Department, mine was for wanting to stop and visit every lookout point on ... read more

ok it's my turn again, these come around so quick. We arrived in Melbourne mid morning on a cool cloudy day. Whilst John was booking into our hotel i was speaking to the receptions who suggested that we visited the Victoria Market which was just across the road from our hotel, so it was down with the suitcases and out to the market which covered 17 acres and had in excess of 1000 stalls selling every sort of produce from fruit to fish etc. Having whipped around the market it was off to the city center to get a feel for the place, to help us with this we caught the free city loop tram complete with a commentary. The following day we were up early as usual on with the walking boots and off for ... read more

Well, I'm sure you are all hearing so much about Christchurch that anything we add will be a little pointless. Fortunately we had an early morning flight on the day of the earthquake and left a little under six hours before it struck for Melbourne. The damage from the previous one was very evident in the city with damaged buildings and fenced off areas where reconstruction was taking place. We were staying very much in the centre where the damage is and were in fact outside the cathedral the evening before taking photos. The luck of time eh! On the day before the disaster we travelled out to a nearby (50 miles) coastal town called Akoroa. A very pretty town which was the site of the first French settlers in New Zealand. There is a notable ... read more

Leaving Franz Joseph we set off on route to Christchurch via a small town called Hokitika. This is a very small coastal town not notable for very much except that we arrived shortly after there had been a beach competition to create sculptures from the masses of driftwood on the beach. Needless to say some were hard to fathom and were clearly from the eye of the creater although the titles were in some part appropriate. My personal favourite being a mish mash of knarled tree branches and such like with the title. "One Day My Son All This will be Yours" a winner for me. We spent a quiet night here in a ocean facing bedroom. The following day was planned to travel to Christchurch in preparation for our flight onward to Australia. We travelled ... read more

Right then the next lap! We arrived in Lake Wanaka late in the afternoon after travelling over the crown ranges, which is the highest main road route in New Zealand. As we had no where to stay, we set about organising that and found a nice motel with a short veranda very near to the centre. We chilled out for the evening after eating lacally with a bottle of wine in front of our room with the last of the evening sun and decided we would stay there another day. The next day we set off on a 3 hour round trip walk around the lake to Beacon Point and back. A great mornings exercise through parkland at the side of the vast lake Wanaka. The following day and for the life of me I cannot ... read more
