Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Friday evenin, Rachels' friends Abi & Roger came round - few beers and large glasses of wine later...they stayed until Sunday! Saturday we got up to go to the city - a stein of beer for breakfast in the Löwenbräu Keller - $20 a litre! After one, we went to the Belgian Beer Cafe for lunch and a few more beers - mussells all round for the girls - Cevan had his first taste of skippy. When asked how he wanted it cooked, he replied "not bouncing"!! After sampling a few of the different beers - our favourite being titje, which [View Full Entry]

We woke to sun surf and sand in December! Decided to have a walkabout and see what was round and about us. We walked down to Coogee beach and admired the waves, then took a wander round the nearby headlands and took some pictures of the sea and a monument to those killed in the Bali bombings. It is great being so close to the beach, especially when the weather is so nice. After Rachel had finished work, she said her & her friend Carly were going for a walk if we fancied it. So off we went, following the walk [View Full Entry]

Last Day Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Coogee Beach
Hello all! Well, today was my last day in Aussie-land and hence my last travel entry. Hopefully you haven’t been to annoyed with the email alerts and have enjoyed the journey so far. This morning was a little rough, and for a change it was not from the wine or VB’s (slang for Victoria Bitters beer, which I have taken quite a liking to :). No, this morning I found myself in a very disagreeable state thanks to the second-degree sunburns I have in random places on my body. Actually in most places I feel ok, but the back of my [View Full Entry]

I started off the week heading to the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains are about an hour and a half outside of the city and you generally hop on a bus tour to go. My little tour picked me up in town and we started our sightseeing at Olympic Park (why, who knows, it’s there right) and then we were off via the Great Western Highway. I can’t tell you much about the beginning because I was sound asleep….but, once we got there, I had quite the adventure. A side-scam of these tours is to lure you in to paying for [View Full Entry]

******Okay, it’s Saturday and my first full day at Sydney. I’m staying at a Holiday Inn in the heart of Chinatown. Got a nice sleep and took my time getting up. My first stop was MarketCity, which is a shopping mall on top and a market on the bottom. Picked up a much-needed backpack there, fretted about the bus system, and finally headed out to the Circular Quay (pronounced “key”) which is the main ferry port. It’s also very near the Rocks district. The Rocks used to be nothing but slums up until the 1970’s. Various schemes were hatched to raze [View Full Entry]

I would just like to take a moment to explain how finals work at Sydney Uni as opposed to Duke. Duke: Friday - classes end The weekend + Monday - FRANTIC STUDY TIME FOR EVERYTHING Tuesday- finals begin, lasting through Sunday Merri's schedule - normally includes three finals three days in a row; other people's schedules often have two finals per day (each three hours) and often three in just 27 hours! Worth - 30 to 40 percent of final grade in class Sydney Uni: Friday - classes end Saturday to following Sunday - study vacation, fondly known as STUVAC! :) [View Full Entry]

Well, the flight here was bearable, although I have had a total of about 4 hours sleep over the past 36 hours... Changed and Dubai (where they have very cool palm trees in the airport) and then Brunei where I met some Aussies and NZers in the smoking lounge who gave me loads of info on travelling, which was cool. Finally got here at 6.30am this morning. First impressions of Australia/Sydney: Really blue sky Sun is brighter than the UK People are more laid back Was picked up from the airport along with some others - Luke, Nicky (who is lovely), [View Full Entry]

Hello Family and Friends.... Well spring is here...more like summer for me. Its been in the high 20's all week long. Hardly rains anymore. It will start to get real hot (35 and up) within about a month! Things have like usual been awesome! We've been working as much as we can...were trying to save up as much as we can so we can live like kings in Thailand. Every purchase now is based on how many days that same amount of money could buy us in Thailand. One CD here....or a day in Thailand...better be a good CD. Work isn't [View Full Entry]

I arrived on Monday at 6.30am (ish) after a horrific flight. We stopped at Dubai and Bangkok and security was soo tight at both places you couldnt even take water through the security check points. Was very upset at this prospect. The actual flight entertainment was good. You have a little screen and a choice of 100 movies, lots of TV series and lots of music and music videos. Ended up talking to some surfer from London who was in Aus for 3 weeks surfing - was a pleasant enough chap - although he did keep me up talking. I didnt [View Full Entry]

Well winter seems to have come and gone. If you blinked you would have missed it. A few weeks ago we had the coldest day in 21 years, it was 4 degrees. The week after it was right back up to the low 20s! Last week was real nice as well. It has been a fun, but real busy few weeks. Dan left us three weeks ago now. If you haven't seen him yet, make sure you say hi before he heads off to Bible school. He called us the other night (friday night) and he was very lonely and wishing [View Full Entry]
