OZ Day 3-4 Left Sydney. Not a moment too soon for us. Too many people, too much traffic, to many narrow roads. Had a nice drive to Katoomba. Found a pretty good campground right next door to Scenic World. Scenic World is home to Katoomba falls, a ‘railway’, a tramway and a Skyway. We ventured onto the railway to go down into the valley and the tramway to get back up again. The railway is ‘interesting’ as it has a 52 degree grade. Great adrenalin rush. Lots of walking in the valley and a lot of history. Very, very enjoyable. Something visitors should take in. Apparently there was and still is some coal mining in the area. Also here are the Three Sisters. Rock formations that the story goes that the chief turned his 3 daughters ... read more

I visited the Blue Mountains world heritage area in Katoomba on Saturday, July 5th. Having been told previously that Australia doesn't really have mountains, at least by Canadian standards, and that I wouldn't be much impressed with the area, they had been quite downplayed and I wasn't expecting much in terms of views. I think you get spoiled living in Vancouver, with the mountain views and proximity to ranges! So I thought it was going to be a fun hiking day, some cool shots, but nothing really spectacular. I was pleasantly wrong... Driving up to the area, there are no jutting peaks or views that capture your attention (apart from bad Sydney drivers, that is...), but once you get out and go to Echo Point, the magnitude of the area takes your breath away. Absolutely amazing... ... read more

Our first weekend in Sydney, a group of us took the train out to Katoomba to visit the 'Grand Canyon' of Australia, the Blue Mountains. I wasn't sure what to expect, but when we got out to the first lookout on our hike, I could not believe how gorgeous my surroundings were. The hike was long, but well worth the surprises of an incredible waterfall and breathtaking valleys. There were some touristy things we heard about and stumbled upon them during our hike. We went on the Scenic Railway which is the steepest incline railway in the world which was built as an amusement ride in the late 19th century. We thought it was quite funny, but it turned out to be a little scary with how dark and rickety it was in the rainforest. We ... read more

Yo! After a relaxing morning on Tuesday we finally got our act together and went off to the Koala Sanctuary - which was AMAZING! We watched - from afar - a snake show, which was basically a long talk baout why you shouldn't be afraid of snakes and why people shouldn't kill them... im not entirely convinced... however, next thing I knew Sophie was suggesting we go and confront our fears by touching a snake. It took me a long time to realise she wasnt joking, and I have to say I felt no better for having done it and the experience wasn't enjoyable in the slightest! Albeit the snake wasn't slimy, but the feel of it was not pleasant! Sophie got far closer to it than I did, enough to actually be in the same ... read more

We finally took our first trip outside of Sydney -- it was only a day trip, but it was a great change of scenery. Matt had just landed a job as a freshwater ecological consultant with a company called The Ecology Lab and we fit this in just before the reality of a 9-5 work week was going to set in. Just about 2 hours West of Sydney (by train) are the Blue Mountains. Apparently they look "blue" as a result of a fine mist of volatile oil given off by the eucalyptus trees...But don't worry, it’s not volatile enough to be noticeable! Anyway, we hopped on the train in Sydney in the morning and hopped off in the town of Katoomba. From the map it looks like the most popular (and largest) town in the ... read more

Day 2 We were up early and had a breakfast of cereal and toast. This morning we were going Abseiling (a.k.a. repelling). For me this was why I was excited most about the trip. We were going to do a very high cliff. We headed to the place where we met our guides but then we had to go to another location because the access road was closed. We ended up going to Mt. York which is the place where the first explorers crossed over the blue mountains. The crazy thing was our head guide of the climbing company and Emily one of our Arcadia guides went to guiding school together! We went over some safety and how to put our harnesses on etc. then we hiked down to the cliffs. The first cliff was ... read more

Pakkasin aamulla matkatavaraa seuraavaksi aamuksi ja lahdin junalla Katoombaan. Rinkka sai olla onneksi Sydneyn hostellissa. Olin perilla klo 13. Taalla vuorilla on selvasti viileampaa kuin rannikkokaupungissa. Vein tavaroita hostelliin, poikkesin kahvilla ja lahdin metsakierrokselle klo 14. Kavelin yhteensa valmista maastoon tehtya polkua pitkin nelja tuntia. Huoneessa oli sahkolammit... read more

Het weer blijft ons ... read more

Geo: -33.714, 150.312This Easter involved just the two of us on a 500km round trip (incl. excursions) to the Blue Mountains. We had been there 5 years ago on 2 separate day trips (one with A&S to Glenbrook and Wentworth falls and one to Katoomba by ourselves) and had always said we'd go back for longer, so we booked an old style hotel in Katoomba for 3 nights this time. The autumn weather has been fabulous but I found out on maudy Thursday that no matter when Easter falls it always rains in NSW, it was 28 degrees that day so I didn't really believe it would happen, woke up Good Friday to a grey and wet day and it didn't stop til Holy Saturday night, relentless and amazing really. So C rented a car on Good Friday ... read more
