The train ride up to the Blue Mountains was really nice and there were some great views over valleys and the like. We're staying in a town called Katoomba which is one of the major tourist towns here and is very hilly. Our hostel is called Number 14 and is really nice. Everything is very clean and its much quieter and smaller than the one in Sydney. After researching a bit we decided to take a walk along the top of the nearby cliffs. The town map deceived us a bit my making everything seem close and flat - in reality the cliffs were a half-hour walk away and the road went up and down far too many times! When we finally got there the views were really spectacular, we decided that we loved the ... read more

I woke up at the crack of dawn (4:50am) to catch a 6:30am bus to Sydney. It was super quiet around Newcastle - i guess i was the only one crazy enough to want to get up that early and head to Sydney! The city was buzzing with rush hour traffic when we arrived three hours later - i was pretty excited, even though i would only be seeing Central Station that day! I hopped a train to Katoomba and got set for my next adventure in the Blue Mountains! The coolness of the mountain air was definitely the first thing to strike me when i got off the train. It really reminded me of how i felt when i got to the Cameron Highlands - definitely time to bring out the long Lulu Lemon ... read more

We were up at a very early hour of the morning after a late night in Kings Cross. First thought on our mind was a coffee and a bacon butty which we tracked down. We were collected shortly after by our bus for the day. The Blue Mountains are about 100 kilometres west of Sydney. As the name suggest the Blue Mountains are actually blue. Its got something to do with the bluish tinge the range takes on when viewed at a distance, caused by the release of volatile oils from eucalyptus forests (Thank you Wikipedia once again). The plan was to drive up to the mountains and then do a 2 to 3 hour trek through one of the national parks. The journey from Sydney was nice as the scenery changed from built up areas ... read more

It's been a while. Since the last blog we have done many things. For 2 days and nights we played pirates on a yacht around the Whitsunday Islands. The weather wasn't great but we had a fun group of people with us and the crew were excellent. The boat, Apollo, was not very piratey to be honest, mainly due to the unpiratey named captain "Captain Dave", but was an ex-racing boat so we got a bit of wind in the sails and nearly lost a man overboard a couple of times. Tres funny. The rum did flow in the evenings and many laughs were had, before having to get up at 6.30am each morning. I know what you're thinking .....6.30am!!. ...ARRRRGH!! We had a few snorkel sessions around the island reefs and got to wear ... read more

Wednesday morning, we headed toward the train station to get us the the right platform to catch the train to Blue Mountians. This is the first time we have actually walked around with our packs on............Mum, I will be sending a package when I get back to Sydney with half my clothes in it!!!! Either that, or I'm going to have killer quads by the time I get home. Kerry already is complaining daily about his back.......we seriously overpacked for this trip. Nice two hour train ride to Katoomba, where we were staying in the Blue Mountains YHA. I booked it after seeing how highly rated it was for a hostel. Katoomba is a quaint town with a busy main road that I imagine would be absolutely packed during their high season. We are lucky to ... read more

Hey everyone, Had a couple more great days in Sydney which entailed alot more walking and exploring all the surrounding neighbourhoods. Walked along Oxford St from Darlinghurst to Paddington where it seemed to be a great shopping street.....didnt buy anything, Kerry was very proud. Layed low that evening and dined at one of the hundred Thai restaurants near the hotel. Tuesday was our last night at the hotel and we were really looking forward to the Salif Keita concert at the Opera House that night. Went for another walk that day, this time through Hyde Park and towards downtown. As we walked through the park it started to rain alittle, no big deal, it seemed to stop pretty quick. Amazing how crazy the downtown area is and the smart travellers we are (not!), decided to walk ... read more

We think that we may have finally found our favourite piece of Australia..and only two hours from Sydney, who would have thought? After an initial stopover in Sydney, on the recommendation of some friends we met in Western Australia over Christmas (thanks Jason and Hayley!!), we set off for a few days in the Blue Mountains. We were told that the views and walking trails up there would surpass anything we had seen so far in Oz, even on the Ocean Road, therefore when we arrived on Sunday afternoon at our gorgeous little hostel up in the mountains we were on top of the world... We woke up the next day to the thickest mist we had ever seen, and that's saying something coming from Northern England, but we set off on a hike through Katoomba ... read more

Happy Birthday Grandad! We went to the Blue Moutains today which is 2hrs on the train from Sydney. It was very misty when we first arrived so I was worried we weren't going to see anything! We got on a hop on/hop off trolley bus at Katoomba to take us round the area. First stop was the Skycentre where we rode the Scenic railway. This is the steepest train in the world (I think), which is a short (steep!) ride down into the rainforrest. We were then below the mist so took a long board walk around the rainforrest and could see everything. I saw a white-browned scrubwren which I was excited about. We rode the cable car back up to the moutains and unfortunately the mist did obscure any views across the valley. We took ... read more

Well, after the debacle of the car, let me leave that for now, and continue with waht has up to now been a fantastic voyage of discovery. We were, however, about to find the best yet, in the fantastic blue mountains. To give you an introduction, the Blue mountains are about 1.5 hours drive from Sydney. It is a mountaneous range which was given its name due to the blue haze given off by the oil of the Eucalyptus trees. We arrive in Katoomba falls caravan park, and put up our tent. The caravan park is set next to a playing field, which has a rugby field to the right of us, and a cricket pitch to the left. Being an avid cricket fan, I am instantly drawn to the cricket pitch, but as we ... read more

Can't believe its march - this trip is going far too quickly for my liking! Jen got up early for a run (crazy girl!) and rang us all to say the clouds were at bay and there was a great picture opportunity to see the blue mountains and the 3 peaks called 'the 3 sisters' so we all got up and drove to meet her. The clouds from yesterday had vanished and the sun was out with blue sky. have been very lucky with the weather. The mountains were beauitful - you can definatly see the blue haze. After breakfast, we drove into the mountains to see about taking a cable car across them. We took a glass bottomed cable car across the mountains, went on the steepest railway in the worls down the mountains (its ... read more
