NZ Day 16 The beginning of the end and the beginning of a new adventure.. We started the day off with our best brekky yet. We didn’t have an oven so I couldn’t make scones. So I used the scone mix to make pancakes instead. They were delicious. Especially because I added bananas to mine. Mmmhmm. Then we sipped through a cupa tea before we could leave to start our day. We started our adventures at the Museum, where we turned out to be early enough to get into Fred and Myrtle Flutey’s Paua Shell house exhibit by just walking straight in. It was a very cute story. Fred and Myrtle were married for over 70 years. Fred liked to play organ music when visitors came over to see the house. (I recognized the songs they ... read more

NZ Day 15 Need a ride? We had a nice brekky of scones I made fresh in the morning. The view was gorgeous because there were picture windows from the hostel looking out on Lake Tekapo. Can I say gorgeous!!!!!!!! Today I did something I thought I’d never do. Pick up a hitchhiker. Mom, don’t get scared. He wasn’t actually a hitchhiker but it was probably the closest I’ll ever get so I figured I’d let myself check it off the list. Johan was a guy from Germany who was staying at the same hostel as us. Just before we left the hostel as we were gathering our things a lady in the kitchen asked us if we were gonna brave the roads. We hadn’t heard that the roads were that bad so we stopped to ... read more

NZ Day 14 Snow Day you say…..Don’t mind if I do! Seasons Greetings Dear Family and Friends, I can’t believe it’s that time of year again. It always seems to go so fast and I never seem to get a holiday card out in time. I have done so much since last Christmas season it will be hard to fill you in on all the happenings in this short Holiday Card but I will try……….I’ve been upside down for a while and I’ve had blast……. Wait! It’s July Not time for holiday cards, but it sure seems like it with all of the snow outside. Today while we were hiking Sarah and I were singing Christmas carols. I thought about writing a holiday card because of good ole Bing singing in my mind about dreaming ... read more

NZ Day 13 Dunedin to Aoraki (Mt. Cook) So we had to leave Dunedin sometime….but why did it have to be so soon. I woke up early to say goodbye to my Uncle Cliff and my cousin Ben before they went to work and school. Then I had a second cup of tea with Pip, Ryan and Rhys after I had packed up all my stuff and put it in the car. It was so nice to stop and have a break from traveling with a real family. It was good to see my cousins and I feel like we are growing closer. I feel like I was the closest to my aunt that I have ever been and it was awesome. She is so cool! When Sarah and I finally hit the road it ... read more

NZ Day 12 Domination Day Today was a day of domination. I got up early and went to work with my Uncle. He was kind enough to arrange for me to take my Gov’t correspondence final through his office. So there I was at 10am in the seminar room DOMINATING that final. It didn’t take the entire time for me to do it either. I’m feeling pretty good P = D (pass equals Degree) and that’s what I’m getting not to long from now. After my final I walked home from the University and got to see a little bit more of Dunedin. It was nice. When I got home I had a bit of lunch and organized some pictures. Then Pip came home and took Sarah and I to see some more of the ... read more

NZ Day 11 We had another lazy morning at the house, but that was good because I got to do a little studying to prepare for my exam tomorrow. After a long lazy breakfast, Sarah and Pip and I got in the car to go for an adventure to the Peninsula around the south side of the harbour. I was glad that Pip wanted to come and tour guide us because she took us to some really neat places and navigated the area much better than we could have done. First she took us to St. Clair beach which was very pretty and only 15 minutes from the house. It seemed like it would have been very nice in the summer time. The could formations were very interesting and made it look like we could ... read more

NZ Day 10 We took advantage of our comfortable surroundings and had a lazy morning at the house. It was nice to have some real cereal for breakfast and a cup of tea with milk. Milk has been one of those things that I have missed during our stays at Backpackers because we have no way to refrigerate it on our long drives. We walked down the steep hill from the house to the main street and caught the bus to the Octagon in the centre of town. We planned an afternoon of walking around seeing the downtown sights and looking in some shops. Our first stop just so happened to be Cadbury World. This is the Cadbury Chocolate Factory where we got a tour and some free chocolate. I got to try a fresh Cocoa ... read more

NZ Day 9 We thought we were doing the main tourist route but we found ourselves quite out of the way of the typical tourists Our first stop was at the oldest wooden lighthouse. It was a beautiful sight and view of the ocean but we were a little disappointed that we didn’t see any seals or sea lions dolphins or penguins, which the guidebook said we might see. Our next stop was the infamous Slope Point. The southern most place on the south island of NZ. The description in the guidebook made us think that this was a very popular tourist attraction. The “thing to do.” We soon realized that not too many people actually make it out there. Sterling Point at Bluff where we were the day before (7k north) evidently is enough ... read more

NZ day 8 Our drive halfway around the bottom of the Island plus an incredibly crazy moment in time The crazy moment was truly a crazy moment in time and truly it felt like I was running with my improbability drive at infinity. But it happened late in the day so you’ll have to wait to hear about it. We began our day leaving Te Anau on what tried to be an early side but turned out more to be about 9:30am. We took the “Southern Scenic Highway” that took us down to the south coast of the south island and over to Invercargill. It seemed in the early parts of our drive that the weather couldn’t decide whether or not it wanted to rain or be sunny. This brings us to the first amazing ... read more

NZ Day 7 Milford Sound and the Surrounding Fjordland We started out the day at a reasonable time of 8’clock and left the hostel by 9:15am. We fueled up and then headed for the road to Milford Sound. We didn’t know exactly what we were going to see but we were prepared to stop wherever it looked inviting or nice. And stop we did. But there were too many places to stop every time it was nice because that would have been every 5 metres. First we stopped at Mistletoe lake and walked on a little loop through the forest looking at the lake and the beautiful snowcapped mountains reflected in the lake. Then we headed deeper into the Fjordland National Park, which is a World Heritage Area. Our next stop was Mirror Lakes. They ... read more
