Up at 7am and headed off to collect my car, albeit a day late, from the rental place. Today I'm off to the Blue Mountains, somewhere where I've been before but in, as you may well have come to expect by now, much worse weather. This morning the sun is out, I've nabbed an upgrade on my car (new Toyota Corolla today, quite spacious, though appears to have been driven into a yellow post at some stage and had its parcel shelf removed...) and a sat nav to boot. My first thoughts of driving through the centre of Sydney are riddled with fear. Perth I can handle, but Sydney? This place is manic. Thank the Lord for the sat nav as it carefully directed me over ANZAC bridge and onto the western distributor. Handily the sat ... read more

On Tuesday I went on an overnight trip to the Blue Mountains, which are about 2 hours west of Sydney. They're given their name due to the eucalyptus trees that cover the mountains (that are actually canyons) and these let off a vapour that makes the air look blue. As we left Sydney at 8am, the weather had decided it was against us and thick grey clouds were gathering overhead. It didn't take long for it to start raining, and the visibility was so bad we didn't think we'd be able to see the trees, let alone the mountains we'd got up early to see. Nevertheless we drove on, and first stopped at Glenbrook, one of the first towns in the Blue Mountains. A lot of the area is covered in grass and so is perfect ... read more

Hi all - or as all as are reading this! Thanks for the comments guys - glad to know some people are actually reading it! I am just writing a couple of lines while I'm waiting for my washing to finish - even us globe trotters have to succumb to the mundane things in life.... (lol) Will pop back later possibly while it's drying! Anyway, we went to the Blue Mountains and it was another lovely, sunny day. I fed some wallabies and some kangaroos; stroked a Koala, then took a glass-bottomed cable car across the top of the rainforest and down into the forest. Took a fab walk around the rainforest, then up again on a train (the steepest hillside train apparently!) Was a bit scary looking down at a 55 degree angle! Better go ... read more

Traumhaft! Zum ersten Felsen ... read more

Feb 11 Katoomba - Blue Mountains The Blue Mountains were well worth the effort to get here. The views from the top of the cliff are breath taking - the valley has steep limestone cliffs and the valley is covered in trees. We spend a good part of the afternoon doing the tourist thing of riding a ‘train’ down very steep cliff (52% incline) to a boardwalk through part of the valley - through an area that was at one time a coal mine and town. We then took a sky tram back up the cliff. We then took another sky tram across a part of the canyon. Touristy but fun. Then as we walked out of the tram station, we heard Darrel’s name being called. Ruehlens and Zabots were sitting in the attached restaurant just ... read more

Written on Wednesday. Last time .I was writing before I left the YHA at Katoomba- and had a full day planned in spite of the weather – 11 deg cold and windy- grey skies with occasional sun bursting through the clouds. This was more like English summer in August. I set off for Scenic World beside the famous 3 sisters… and that is certainly worth $26 … a cable car trip across the gorge - those of you who don’t like heights –Marilyn B , and Lesley would not have liked it when the glass floor turned from opaque to see through and you could look down and even walk on it …Lesley, you would have been crying !!!! You got off and could walk to lookout and then come back across the gorge. You can ... read more

Good morning - its just after 8 am and as I am staying at the YHA in the Blue Mountains and have got 4 hours left of my internet connection before my money runs out - I thought I would do a quick blog of the last few days. Bet you can't beleive I am up so early!!!! Arrived here in Blue Mnts - which is about 11/2hr drive west of Sydney. A good road to get here - but then its a toll road... it seems that any faster travel on a road or a tunnel you have to pay... there is an electronic tag things in the car which adds it all up - so I will pay Jo for that when I give her the car back....well thats convenient anyway. So I managed ... read more

So, my plan this weekend was to head to Katoomba this weekend to do some more hiking and see more of the Blue Mountains, but that changed. I went on Wednesday instead. It was a quick decision, Uncle Dan said it might be better to head up there during the week to miss the crowds, 1 hour later I was on a train! I packed my little rucksack and got on the train. The train was about 1 hr 30 mins and only cost $6 (4 quid) and the views were amazing. I checked myself into the YHA on the high street. The YHA was really nice. The rooms were huge, as was the kitchen with good appliances (however, after about 20 mins waiting for the kettle to boil, I realised I hadn't plugged it in ... read more

I spent the day in the blue mountains - it's really a glorious part of the world... I spent some time at the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls, Wentworth Falls Lake, Glenbrook Lagoon and Knapsack Bridge at Glenbrook. Having something this wonderful on your doorstep is truly magical!... read more

The time was right to get out of rural North QLD for another planned weekend, this time to coincide with my birthday a few days earlier, and just because. I have heard so many things about this region, and it lived up to be expectations, in fact a slice of NZ climate and in some ways scenically (the flora especially, ponga ferns, tussock grasses and climatically cool clear mornings). The Friday night in the ‘Ville was great, and having a swim in the Rockpool the next day before going up Castle hill with newly met friends good way to expend some energy before refuelling at a café on the Strand. All going well the weekend could also have shaped up to be a wee reunion with a friend living in ACT but that did not eventuate ... read more
