Packed up again ready to move on - am having some issues with my backpack. everytime i open it everything seems to explode everywhere - organised mess! i may have purchased one too many items though so that could account for why things aren't fitting in anymore! Anyway, we flew from Ballina to Sydney. Ballina must be one of the smallest airports in the worls and our plane was the smallest i've been on - it took 20 passengers! low cost airlines are quite new here, but that was cool with us as the flight was dead cheap. The flight was about 1.5 hours. When we landed at sydney we went staright to pick up the car. it was an automatic, i have NEVER driven an automatic! very ammusing starting off as my left foot wanted ... read more

Yesterday we went for picnic in a national parc and in the evening we treated ourselves to Opera tickets in the Sydney opera house. Amazing! We saw Alcina by Haendle and it was just beautiful! It was good fun dressing up for the occasion. After almost for month in Teva sandals and baggy shirts we felt like the king and queen. Today was the day of great Australian nature: Karl took us on a trip to the blue mountains and we enjoyed great views at Katoomba. The weather was odd though: it was raining but through the rain the sun still shone so hot that we felt like covering up or standing in the shade. And across the plain at the 3 sisters we could see lightning and rain in the distance which was quite a ... read more

Well, here is the lowdown, forgo the whole 45$ bus ride to the three sisters from katoomba, just hop on the early train from syndey, and spend the day, hop on the train back. its actually funny/sad to watch people pay for it since you are forced to follow their regime. You might miss a few of the smaller sights, but the best of the blue mountains is easily accessible. I left this morning on a train with George to katoomba (we almost missed it), and then we got off the train and walked down the street to echo point 15 minute walk maybe 20 minutes. It was kind of nice after sitting for 2 hours on the train from sydney. We checked out the three sisters. After the initial 'wow thats cool' there really wasnt ... read more

So it finally actually happened, I have left sydney well it was only for 2 days but i'm back now. I went out to the Blue mountains which are about 2 hours east of Sydney, but they aren't just a small collection of mountains, the whole of the national park of the Blue mountains is about the same size as Holland, they it's quite a large area. I actually went on an organized tour, not quite upto doing things on my own yet. But we had the craziest tour guide, i think I've met some pretty insane people in my time, but she really was head and shoulders above any of them. And her name was Ned from Zimbabwae. But we all met and 7 in the morning to leave, a time unheard of by me ... read more

A lovely hot day broke after overnight storms. We did one of the famous local walks down very steep steps down the cliff right beside the 'Three Sisters' - a distinctive weathered rock formation. It was very hard on the knees. We met two brave souls doing the ascent - which must be incredibly arduous - there are warning signs advising those with any heart conditions not to attempt it. At the base of the cliffs there is a shady walk past waterfalls through the thick gum tree forest which was very gratifying. We took the easy option of catching the very steep tourist train (originally built for hauling coal) back to the top. It had been a very satisfying walk. In the late afternoon we went for a scenic drive to some other viewpoints ... read more

We left Sydney on Sunday 28th, heading for the Blue Mountains. Our Millenium Falcon seemed to be coping ok with the road and heat. We got to Katoomba (the main town in the Blue Mountains National Park) where we were able to take in the magnificent views of the Megalong valley, with mountains that DO actually have a blue tint. Guide books tell you this is due to the oil evaporating from all the eucalyptus trees! Sounds like a good explanation to me. Unfortunately the type of eucalyptus trees in the Blue Moutains isn't the type that koalas eat so we were told not to expect to see any around there. The 3 Sisters rock formation (see beautiful picture of me on the right...) is made of 3 rather impressive rocks which stand tall on the ... read more

We left Sydney behind to venture into the Blue Mountains (on valentines day - not sure how Jason is going to beat this next year!). We caught the 9.55am train, (which had an upstairs and downstairs!) and we arrived in Katoomba two hours later. We had booked a room at the YHA. The hostel was very nice with huge communal areas and a big, well equipped kitchen. We had lunch at a nice cafe and decided not to waste any time and get out on a walk straight away. Again, the weather had been kind to us. The heavy rain had cleared prior to our arrival, to leave blue skies and hot sun, meant we should see some good watefalls (i.e. not like the dried out J C Slaughter Falls of Mt. Coo-tha, Brisbane!). We joined ... read more

This Monday was the day we were set to pick up our hire car that would transport us the 2000+ks up the east coast to Cairns. After some serious cockins, we had been given an old pick up address in the wrong suburb, we finally got the keys to our new beast. We had rented through a company called Apollo who were much cheaper than elsewhere and assumed that the car would be ropey but it is actually really a good motor. Having got the car, we headed for a town called Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. It was driving rain all the way there and we didn't have a hope of taking in any views. The hostel we booked (Flying Fox) had cocked up the internet booking but we were so glad ... read more

Yesterday was a full day. We left sydney early and headed to katoomba where we got off the train and headed in the wrong direction for a bit, but we eventually found our hostel the YHA. it is great! very clean very nice. We heard that the backpackers one in town here was a bit buggy and the rooms were old dispite its clean appearance. So thats why we chose the YHA. As for our health. Everyone is doing fine, but ryan has a nice sunburn on his shoulders and on the tops of his feet. A bit unfortunate but he seems to be coping. We hitched out to the jenolan caves and were picked up pretty quick. The reasoning behind hitchhiking was due to the fact that they wanted to charge 45$ to get you ... read more

The following day we decided to head off into the Blue Mountains. We had read about a small town called Katoomba which was supposedly a good base to see some of the best views of the mountains. We arrived in Katoomba about 1pm and booked onto our campsite for just a night. It had predicted thunderstorms on the weather forecast so at least we had an idea of what to expect. It was only when we were making some lunch that we heard on the radio that England were through to the cricket final against Australia and they were playing in Melbourne in a couple of days time. It was then that we thought how great it would be to try and get tickets. It would mean though that we would have on hell of a ... read more
