I’m sitting in the spare bedroom, Segi is on my lap, and we’re listening to a party that has been going on since early this morning, since about 4. All of September here is pretty much a huge party. Yesterday was Independence Day, and let me tell you, it put the United States to shame (something that Mexico does a lot, actually). Maybe this is just unique to Denver, maybe it is different across the United States, but most of my fourth of Julys have consisted of barbecuing, watching fire works, and setting off fireworks. There never really included anything particularly patriotic, except for the few years I was the statue of liberty in the Southern Hills 4th of July parade (which, by the way, I hated). I can’t think of a song that I heard ... read more

It's been a great summer surveying the mountain lakes of the Emigrant and Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges. On my days off I've been bagging a lot of peaks and before my accident I was climbing as much as I could. A recent fall off my longboard has put me out of commision for climbing and carrying a pack heavy enough to need a waist belt. I had to miss the last tour into the backcountry do to my injuries, so I have been working on a restoration project. Which is the Fish Erratication of Matlock and Slim Lakes. The Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog is a tadpole for two years, which means they need to be in bodies of water that are deep enough to remain unfrozen over winter, and that is the same criteria for their main ... read more

Ciao! Niinpä niin, siitäkö taas puhe mistä puute?!? Näinkin asian voi tulkita, sillä ajattelin jakaa pohdintojani vaihto-opiskelusta. Jonkun tilapäisen mielenterveyden riivaamana löysin nimittäin itseni tänään luennoilta kahteen otteeseen. Ettei vain olisi paljon puhutun kulttuurishokin kavalia ensi oireita?!? Tilaisuudet itsessään olivat erittäin hyvin rakennettuja, aiheita käsiteltiin syvällisesti, opettajat olivat vakuuttavia yhtä poikkeusta lukuunottamatta, joka vain vahvistaa säännön ja luennot olivat kaikinpuolin muutenkin varsin viihtyisiä, MUTTA käsiteltävät asiat... Päivän suurimmat asiat olivat ensimmäisen asteen yhtälön ratkaiseminen Investments Managementissä ja Sales and Merchandising Managementissa puolestaan käsiteltiin, miten autokauppiaan tulisi pukeutua, jotta hän edistäisi myymistä kulloinkin mahdollisimman tehokkaasti ja ja laadittiin ... read more

Having lived in Sunny Florida (its absolutely pissing down at the moment) for pretty close to 10 months now we thought it was time to check out the No 1 holiday destination in the US - the theme parks at Orlando. There are an absolute plethora of theme parks to visit in Orlando - Disney has six parks by itself, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Disney-MGM Studios, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Then you have the two Universal Parks - Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, plus Seaworld, Wet n' Wild and our personal favorite - Holy Land! (I'm serious - check it out at http://www.theholylandexperience.com/). So needless to say we had plenty to choose from. On our last visit to Orlando we had sat through the Timeshare sales pitch that seems to plague popular tourist ... read more

Distance: 4 miles Rating: Strenuous With winter weather already showing up in the mountains, my dad and I decided to get in one more difficult, high altitude hike before the season ended. I settled on the cluster of 14ers just west of the small town of Alma in the Mosquito Range: Mt. Democrat, Mt. Lincoln, and Mt. Bross. According to several books and websites, these three mountains can be climbed all in one day thanks to relatively straight-forward hiking and close proximity. That said, the hike is no easy task. Remember that it still involves climbing 14ers, the easiest of which are still fairly challenging hikes. We set out with the hopes of reaching the summits of all three mountains, but the conditions ended up working against us. There were already several inches of snow at ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago September 17th 2007

We set our alarms to 5AM this morning, it was by far the earliest start so far. I took some photos of the campsite while we packed the van then watched the sunrise on our dive to Chicago. We stopped for a meeting and lunch just before we were approaching Chicago and Jon talked us through what we were going to do. He also said that we’d be meeting up with Lucy today, she was getting the train in to rejoin us after her knee operation. As we drove towards Chicago we could see the Sears Tower which towered high into the sky, a very impressive building. We drove around the streets of Chicago until we arrived at our HI hostel where almost the entire group was in the same dorm, it was great. We weren’t ... read more

Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st, The Birches Resort, Rockwood, Maine. Darrin had a great week at the Birches Resort. Owned by John Willard, a Maine guide, pilot, and member of the Board of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail organization; The Birches dates back to the 1920’s (at which time it was under different ownership), and provides all the ambience one can imagine in the remote Maine Woods. Situated on the shores of Moosehead Lake, The Birches offers a variety of rustic cabins, plus a classic log-sided main lodge with an old stone fireplace, a dining room with views of the lake, and a bar with unique touches like chairs carved from huge tree stumps. Over the course of the week, Darrin explored some of the 11,000 acres that compose The Birches’ property. He rented ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Capitol Reef September 17th 2007

Capitol Reef National Park was the last of the national parks I was able to visit on my mini vaction to Utah. Capitol Reef was a very nice surprise. It has some wonderful red and white rock features. The Chimney is quite a site standing all alone rising from the floor. Also present is a formation named the Castle and a massive white rock the Capitol Reef Park is named for which early discoverers named the Capitol because it reminded them of the Capitol Dome. Also near Capitol Reef is the Grand Staircase National Monument which is a new Monument having just been designated in 1996 amidst some controversy. The area before Capitol Reef and after Grand Staircase is quite impressive as well. A scenic drive takes you to too many geologic features to count or ... read more
