NZ South Island – Part B: The Campervan Day 10 – Drive to Franz Joseph Glacier Unfortunately we spent the next morning kicking around Wanaka waiting for the mechanic to repair our gas bottle. The only advantage we had was that I got to sneak in another visit to the Wanaka Beerworks and pick up a few travellers. After the morning pitstop we got back on the road and headed for the West Coast and the Franz Joseph Glacier. Once again we had some pretty terrible weather, and a long day (afternoon) of driving. We cut our way through the pass and came out on the other side into lush sub-tropical rain forest. It rains on the West Coast almost as much as in Milford Sound, so the scenery was pretty speco. The West Coast rates ... read more

New Zealand South Island Part A: Queenstown Region It's been quite some time since we've last used the blog, in fact, probably pretty close to 2 years. However we've decided to make use of it again but more as a journal for our own keeping than to stay in touch with everyone, but feel free to read on. Much has changed since our trip to the US and return home through Europe – namely the birth of our son Patrick, so I think the manner in which we record our 'adventures' now will differ greatly. I expect that much of what we record will be watching Patrick's experiences and responses to encounters on our travels. This will probably bore some, but I'm sure it will make for great reading for Fiona and I in the years ... read more

Well - we're not exactly travelling again, but this has proven the easiest way for us to get photos and videos out, so we thought we'd put a few of the little bloke up. Time has flown by, and he's now only a few days shy of 3 months old. It's amazing how quickly he's changing - it seems like every day he's doing something new so its a pretty amazing experience. Anyway, here's a few photos to check out! Thankfully he looks like Fi!!... read more

If you haven't heard yet, Fiona and I welcomed Patrick James Anderson into the world at 0723 on 30 June 09, yes, he's a End of the Financial Year Baby. He's just a little fella, weighing in at 2.9kg, but we are blessed as he's healthy, strong and a beautiful little guy. We'd also like to thank you all for your overwhelming generosity. From the baby shower gifts, to flowers and thoughtful messages, Fiona and I were really touched by all your kindness and generosity - Thank you. If we haven't been in touch yet, we will be doing so shortly - we are still trying to get ourselves organised and familiar with all the new aspects of life with a sprog. We thought this would be a great way to get photos out to you ... read more

March 22nd 2009

G'day all - this is just a really quick post to put up some photos of where we are living at the moment. We have found a fantastic place in the eastern suburbs of Sydney at Coogee Beach. For those who don't know Sydney it's about 10 mins drive to the city and about 5 mins in the car to the famous Bondi Beach. Coogee itself is a pretty sheltered beach so there's no big waves, but another five minutes south is Maroubra Beach which gets some great surf. There's quite a few cafes and restaurants around and we have a couple of other 'cafe streets' within five minutes walk (Clovelly and Randwick), so all up, it's a pretty great place. The house itself is a three bedroom townhouse with lounge and kitchen downstairs and 3 ... read more

With our time in Florence finished we grabbed a train to the southern coast of Italy, to the Amalfi Coast. The first stop was Naples and we toyed with the idea of spending the day there and seeing the sights, but dragging our luggage around quickly put that idea on the back burner. It turned out to be a good idea too, because it was quite a journey to get ourselves to the small town of Sorrento which would be our home for the next 3 days. From Naples we jumped a local train which rattled it's way around the Bay of Naples and through the shadow of the infamous Mount Vesuvius. We arrived in Sorrento which is the end of the line for the train and walked the short distance into town. We quickly found ... read more

After hogging an entire first class compartment and sleeping most of the trip from Innsbruck we arrived in Venice on a cool Italian night which was actually warmer than most of the maximum day temperatures we'd experienced in Western Europe. We'd been looking forward to hitting Italy, not only for the food, culture and art, but also to escape the sub-zero weather we'd had to date. The forecast temperatures of 10 - 12 degrees across most of Italy seemed positively balmy after freezing our good bits off for the past month. We walked out of the Venice train station to be greeted by a huge church dome towering over the famous Grand Canal - it immediately made you realise that you were standing in Venice which was pretty exciting. We rolled our bags down the street ... read more

The first stop on the short Austria leg of our trip to Austria was Salzburg which is famous for being Mozart's hometown, and where they filmed 'The Sound of Music'. We caught the train from Munich and traveled through some of the most picturesque countryside we have seen to date. The snow covered Alps provided a rugged backdrop as the train quietly rolled through green hills and past quaint little towns. We arrived at Salzburg and made the short work to our hotel. Throughout our travels we have tried to find hotels pretty close to the train station and then we will walk the distance to the centre of town or use the subway systems. The subway systems in every European city we have stayed have been amazingly efficient - it's unbelievable how crappy the Australian ... read more

The first stop on the German leg of our tour started by catching up with our friends Thomas, Nina and their two boys who live up near the North West coast of Germany. We met Thomas while he was working in Jacksonville on an exchange posting with the US Navy. Thomas was the bloke who got me into Triathlons and we did a couple of the short distance ones together before he returned to Germany in late 2007. Thomas and Nina live in a beautiful house they built in a small town called Nordholz shortly before they were told of Thomas' posting to the US, so they were pretty pleased to return to their almost new house after their time in Jacksonville. Fi and I made the multiple train stops required from Amsterdam and eventually met ... read more
