Our first (crazy) day in SanFran
Published: May 23rd 2006North America » United States » California » San FranciscoWe have arrived safely, albeit warily, in San Francisco. Today was quite an adventure! Our plane arrived on time, but not before we had at least one student lose his boarding pass and another student get patted down for plastic explosives - really! I wish I were making it up. Then, as we took our transport (by bus) from the Oakland airport to the subway station, our bus driver hit a pedestrian. Does this seem crazy enough yet?? Luckily, there was no real damage done. Since then we've checked into our hostel, discovered that catching a bus can take an hour, and reminisced over the fact that if you walk the 2 miles one way on the Golden Gate Bridge you have to WALK back as well; no, there's not a bus. Oh, and in case ... read more
The Big Apple Part I
Published: June 29th 2006North America » United States » New York » New York » ManhattanAlright by now most of you realise that we came home early!! We cam back for a few reasons; 1. To surprise everyone 2. Save money 3. To be back in time for the world cup :-P!! 4. I was getting annoyed with Kim’s relentless smoking and drinking binges!! :-P While we were away our plan to come home early was pretty hard to keep from everyone so we had to slow down our blog entries and tell a few white lies so people thought we were in different locations than we really were! Writing a New York blog before coming home would have given the hint that we were coming home early especially as our final flight was from JFK airport. We had a lot riding on NY and hoped it would live up to ... read more
Well I leave in roughly 24 hours so I figured it was about time I got this whole blog thing figured out. I did a little research on this "Trave Blog" sites and decided I liked this site the best. They claim that I can post unlimited pictures to my entires so I will hopefully be adding lots. Also, if you want to receive e-mail notifications whenever I get around to updating, theres a subscribe link somewhere on the page - click it. I'm not really sure how computer access is going to work out in Spain. I know the University has public computers so I should be able to get on there, but I make no promises as to frequency of updates. It is my goal to write once-twice a week but we'll see. Yellowstone National Park/Helena
Published: May 25th 2006North America » United States » Wyoming » Yellowstone National ParkSetting off early yet again, myself and Marcus drove from Cody to the east entrance of Yellowstone, to encounter a bizarre change in weather; it must have dropped 20 degrees F as soon as you went across the checkpoint and there was alot of fog and snow still left from the winter. Unfortunately there were roadworks for the first 6 miles or so into the park, so we and about 6 cars had to be taken through with a convoy vehicle before we descended onto the north of Yellowstone Lake. The weather improved as we drove across the park and we did get to see some wildlife, Bison and deer in particular. Yellowstone is amazing and there are two loops you can take the north and the south, we chose the south as you get to ... read more
Cait: Today was a day of contrasts. Our trip has, so far, allowed us to see and experience many of the dramatic differences in lifestyle all contained within our country. The ticking of the odometer however, has provided an ease of transition between these lifestyle segments, whether it be in mile-markers passed by on an interstate or mountains climbed in-between. Today however, was different. To wake up in the Mormon capitol of the world and retire to sleep 14 hours later in a glitzy hotel-casino is certainly something the mind struggles to understand….particularly when both of these lifestyles are ones that you personally avoid. Thankfully, for me, much of the afternoon in-between was spent in the beautiful outdoors, where, as those of you who know me, understand that I feel most comfortable. After sleeping in (comparatively) ... read more

Well were on our second house and it was only worked on an hour and 45 minutes prior to us starting. My team is very ambitious and wants to get the work done in a timely manner. We should finish this house tomorrow I'm hoping tofay is just my rest and relaxation day and were going back into the French Quarter on Friday. Also, our bus driver gave us a tour of the Murphey Oil Spill area and it was just so devastating the destruction. Shrimp boat in the middle of the road about ten different houses uprooted from their plots and houses just completed flattened. It was a sight to see. Well hope y'all keep in touch and keep readin my blogs.... read more

Day 2: San Francisco's Other Side
Published: May 24th 2006North America » United States » California » San FranciscoWe started out our day with a trip the Alcatraz Island and the infamous prison. We acquired audio tour headsets and walked around the cell blocks, with our trip narrated by the voices of former guards and prisoners. The audio tour even included appropriate background noises such as whistles and shouts. Can you say creepy?? It was very moving, though. The kids seemed to really enjoy hearing the details of famous prisoners and fabled escapes. Alcatraz was followed by lunch on Fisherman's Wharf, and most of us tried out some fish and chips or other seafare. We were then delighted by the exhibits in the Aquarium of the Bay, which features an underground tunnel where you are surrounded on three sides by water and various sea animals. Even the oldest kids (myself included) were fascinated by ... read more

San Fransico with CSM
Published: January 11th 2007North America » United States » California » San FranciscoThis past summer I spent a little over 3 months in San Francisco, working with the Center for Student Missions (CSM www.csm.org). My job was City Host, and this entailed me leading groups of students (usually from the ages 13-17, but I did have one adult group) around the city working on service projects. We spent time at soup kitchens, kid summer camps, food banks and other organizations supporting people in need in the city. It was an amazing experience, it was hard work both physically and emotionally draining but very rewarding. There were 8 City Hosts and 2 City Directors (that live there full time), and I was very blessed to have had the opportunity to work such great individuals. I learned so much from them and they encouraged, supported and made me laugh when ... read more
