We've had a busy few months, filled with holidays and random nonsense. Back in October, we introduced Halloween to our students with pumpkin carving, costume contests and lots of ghoulish decorations. Still, there were reminders that an American holiday cannot simply be transferred to another domain. My personal favorite moment was watching Todd try to carve a pumpkin that maybe, MAYBE, reached six inches in height. The reasoning behind such girth in Korean pumpkins remains a mystery. As for our costumes, we decided to salute two mainstays of Korean culture; Soju, the standard alcoholic drink, and Samgyeopsal, a famous pork dish. We were a huge hit at all the bars, though I think the man dressed as Ramien noodles had us beat. To celebrate Thanksgiving, we intended to eat a gluttonous amount of turkey and fixins. ... read more

This blog is about the lovely week we spent in Seattle leading up to the wedding of our dear friends, Troy and Kristen (Todd's brother and his new bride). On our first night there, Todd surprised me with Mariners tickets since I'm such a big baseball fan. We went with Todd's friend Jamie and our nephew Noah. Although Seattle is the worst in the league this year, as evidenced by attendance, we had a great time and stocked up on ballpark hot dogs, which we've missed so much. The next day we had brunch in Kirkland overlooking the water. I really fell in love with this little town! It's so scenic, particularly for those of us who reside in a concrete jungle like Seoul. I spent the afternoon burning a hole in my wallet at the ... read more

One week before Kristen's wedding to Todd's brother, Troy, I whisked her away to Vancouver for a girls' weekend with her future mother-in-law, Teresa, and sister-in-law, Tammy. This was to be my first visit to Canada and my first trip back to North America in over a year, so I was excited all around. My flight was actually connecting through Vancouver on the way to Seattle and our plan was to drive as a group up to Vancouver. However, the flight was delayed and I decided to break my connection and wait for everyone in Vancouver. I took a shuttle to the Opus Hotel in Yalestown, where we had reserved a corner suite. This is a superb little boutique hotel, which I recommend to anyone visiting the city. It was cold and rainy when I arrived ... read more

From Russia With Love

For our summer vacation we chose to head to Russia, primarily because we wanted to escape the heat and thunderstorms in Asia. Also, we were excited by such a random destination. Since we had nine days off we picked two cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow. On the flight to St. Pete we realized we had zero expectations aside from a plethora of vodka and the lingering effects of communism. After a year in Asia, we certainly felt like we were in for a change. Immediately upon arriving at the tiny airport we noticed that this part of the country resembles Alaska. Lush, green trees stretched out for miles and the sun seemed to hang in the sky. As we waited for our bags we absorbed the distinct physical attributes of the Russian people, most notably striking ... read more

This blog is a random assortment of pics from this summer. Though it was technically the rainy season, we managed to enjoy ourselves and travel around the city a bit. We even got to the beach on the Western coast of Korea, though sunshine - and thus, decent tans - eluded us. We headed down for the famous Boryeong Mud Festival, which is a celebration of the therapeutic mud found in that region of the country. People basically cover themselves in mud and drink a lot. Showing our age, we decided to just drink a lot. We also went to a going away party for our friend Jenn, who moved to Mongolia after several years of living in Korea. In her honor, we crashed Canada Day Fest '08 for some "normal" food and music. We spent ... read more

Back in June, Todd and I visited Tokyo with the explicit purpose of planning his brother Troy's bachelor party. Todd wanted to throw him a swanky, international bash, so the biggest and most expensive city in the world certainly fit the bill. This was our fourth trip to Japan in a matter of months but neither of us had ever been to Tokyo. Our arrival was not as smooth as usual, simply because traversing the largest city in the world is neither cheap nor brief. It took us almost two hours to reach our hotel in Akasaka, at which point Todd, who cannot count patience as a virtue, nearly self-destructed. Luckily, our boutique hotel was fabulous and nestled in a trendy area. It was great to be back in the land of motion sensitive escalators, streets ... read more

Ni hao! That's hello in Chinese. In celebration of Buddha's birthday we headed to mainland China to visit Allison, who grew up in Todd's tiny town and has been teaching there for a few years. When we arrived on Friday evening, she had kindly arranged a van for us and met us at the airport. On the drive into Shanghai, our first impressions were that the skyscrapers are stunning and unique and that the city exudes a vibrant energy. We headed straight to our hotel to change and depart for a club at which her friend's band was playing a gig. There was a great mix of foreigners there, unlike Korea. It is truly an international city, much like Hong Kong. Todd and Allison reminisced about life on the farm and then we made our way ... read more

This blog is a collection of photos from the last few months here in Seoul. We've been quite busy switching jobs, sightseeing and tearin up the town on our newest purchase - a scooter!!! In addition, we have both landed side jobs teaching English to execs at Swiss Bank. Todd is also privately tutoring one of Korea's most famous comedians, Kim Yung Chul, who has become a friend of ours. Many of the photos are from our day at Gyeongbokgung Royal Palace, which was originally constructed in 1394. It's actually a huge village where South Korea's kings and over 2,000 palace workers resided for centuries. It is truly like stepping back in time. It was freezing on the day we went, but we agreed it's the coolest thing we've seen yet in Seoul. There are also ... read more

Todd's mother and sister, Teresa and Tammy, traveled from Seattle to visit us during the first week of April. Although Tammy has traveled around Asia quite a bit, it was Teresa's first time to the Orient. It was also the first time Todd and I have seen family in over seven months, so we were especially excited. They arrived late on Sunday evening, so we headed straight to Kangnam. They battled jet lag and stayed up with us for a few drinks at one of our regular spots, Big Rock, which is owned by our friend Andy. We shared their famous beer sampler and chatted with our dear friend Matty, who has been living and working in Korea for nine years. After many stories and much laughter, we all headed back to our place and went ... read more

We hopped over to the seaside town of Fukuoka for a quick weekend trip at the end of February. We got there in the early morning and checked in to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in an area called Hakata. As usual, we found the weather outside of South Korea much more agreeable! We hopped on the subway and checked out some of the city's famous shrines and temples. The most recognizable is Kushida Shrine, which was originally founded in 757. We found a very lively restaurant for dinner, where the staff was super friendly and many customers approached us to say hello and practice their English. We had sashimi, yaki soba, crab, and sweet pumpkin with fish. Some of our new friends invited us to join them upstairs after our meal. Most of them spoke no ... read more
