My birthday passed in Smith Rock. A good day- and a good time overall. From Smith, we head south to California. It is obvious before we even get there that this one trip will be more reconnaissance than anything else; California is a huge state with vast opportunities for climbing to say nothing of all the other forms of outdoor recreation. Anticipation runs high as we drive through the night towards Lake Tahoe- our first and most anticipated stop. Let me explain this briefly. Lake Tahoe is home to one of the few cliffs in the US where there are long moderate climbs that are well protected. This translates into long-ish routes with great exposure and consistent difficulty. More than that, Lake Tahoe was once home to the late, great Dan Osman- a climbing icon of ... read more

Here you go Stacy...now you can't complain any more.... Day 21- Today we discovered that trucks stops are our friends. Today was extremely productive. Gil checked all Cleveland’s vitals. Kate did laundry. We checked our emails charged our phones, computer, camera batteries and showered. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a lot when you live in a camper. We also met some really friendly people who gave us some advice on some sweet places to visit in the Black Hills. Most importantly we discovered that you can camp in them for free… One man who we met said he had been living in the “hills” for the past 3 years. The one stipulation, is that you can’t camp somewhere for more than thirty days. So for the past 3 years, he and his wife moved ... read more

Sunday September 28, 2008 Try to blow your mind away - its easy driving from Durango, Colorado to Monument Valley Utah. From yellow fall Aspen colours in the foothills of the 13,000 foot San Juan Mountains to red sand desert, pale green sage and stupendous monoliths rising 300 metres (1,000 feet) from the desert floor. Along the way the climate changed gradually - becoming much dryer as we entered native American reservation land, first Ute then Navajo. The town of Bluff was true to its name with a pale peach sandstone wall behind and massive rocks along the highway that eroded from this bluff. The only real green was bush willow along the shores of the San Juan River which we followed and finally crossed north of Mexican Hat on Highway 162. Then we turned south ... read more

My sister and I made it back to the States yesterday and are safe and wanting already to go back on vacation! It is somewhat good to be home, but already miss the culture and diversity of Europe. The Europeans know what to take seriously and how to enjoy life. I am already missing the croissant for breakfast and beer throughout the day. This is the first time that we both have not craved a Fanta while there. We only had one and it was good, but pure sugar. Since I have only been home a few hours, I have been asked numerous times if I heard about the financial crisis in the US. The European television stations generally only carry one or two English stations. Usually, CNN World and the BBC in some areas. So, ... read more

Friends: I am writing for another venue, but feel like I would neglect you if I don't include this here. Please let me know if you would rather not continue to get these blogs and for goodness sakes, feel free to not read them! *************** I grew up and live, yet again, in a southeast Texas gulf coast area that we lovingly call the 'Golden Triangle'. The 'Golden' has to be because of the hearts of gold of our citizens. Whenever there is a need or call to help, this area is more than ready to respond. In 2005 when Katrina devastated so many, our area gladly took in evacuees in churches, shelters and individuals' homes. Donations were flowing out of here. Little did we know that less than a month later Hurricane Rita would be ... read more

Hello all. We are alive and well and in Lincoln, Nebraska tonight; for being on the road for over 2 weeks now, we are doing great! The kids have become real road warriors and our time on the road has been profitable even if they are not in school. For example: 1. We visited the New Mexico Natural History Museum in Albuquerque for a day and the kids learned alot about dinosaurs and much of the Southwest's natural history. (they had some really great exhibits, and this was part of Sam's 6th birthday present) 2. They are learning a great deal about the different states in our huge country and all of the culture that goes with each state. 3. They learned alot about caring for horses while in Colorado. 4. We have passed many (working) ... read more

26/9 It was my turn for the window seat, lucky me all I could see was a dirty great jet engine other than that a short an uneventful flight. Our room was ready so dumped our bags again and off to check out the sights and have some lunch. Back to the room for a rest and a few drinks then over to the famous Pier 39, which is right across the road from our hotel. At the end of the pier lives a sea-lion colony of a couple hundred or so, boy are they noisy. They live on purposely built pontoons, this is so they don't climb on to the docks. We had dinner on the pier, more fish and chips but yum yum yummy. 27/9 Bus tour which took us all over the city, ... read more

...in order to discover your own roots. There were opportunities in Boston: they taught me to push myself. There was power in Geneva: it taught me humility. There were sights to be seen in Paris: they taught me to keep looking. There were mountains in Vienna: they taught me to keep climbing... but reminded me how it felt to look West. And everywhere, there were people: they were my passion - they taught me how to serve. It's been an interesting couple of months, hasn't it? I spent the 3 months prior to this one trying to recognize the path below my feet. Tried to content myself, empower myself and find my "it". I swore to myself, 5 years ago, that I would break free of Thornton, Colorado - that I was bigger, better, faster than ... read more

Early Thursday we headed to Tommy Jeffs home Monticello outside of Charlottesville, VA This is our second trip. but Monticello is still amazing. Our tour guide was barely adequate, but touring the grounds on our own was great, Bets was having difficulty on the grades and because we had not eaten needed extra breaks. We had connected with her friend Judy and husband Dave who left from Nevada a day after we did. We played catchup on our trip and where we were headed next. Although Monticello is on many acres, the house is not huge, but there are many interesting parts under the house kitchen, ice house, beer and wine cellar and privies. There are additional walking tours around the grounds and down to the family cemetery. Got Bets back up the hill, on the ... read more
