Monday September 29, 2008 The weather was beautiful, scenery spectacular, facilities pristine, campground almost deserted, campsite well-treed and shady all day. Why wouldn’t we stay another day? It’s so nice to get up whenever we want and not hurry through the morning! (Can you tell that Kayla is writing this blog?) Ahhhhh, just to kick back and admire the scenery while the rest of the world scurries around. We watched the school bus pick up the kids and remembered that this was a school day and some of the Navajo kids have to travel many miles just to catch the bus. They live all over the huge reservation. Well OK, so we did a little laundry - washed the sheets, towels and some clothes. Oh, and then we thought it would be nice to bike across ... read more

Sadly it's time to leave and continue our journey on towards Las Vegas today. Loaded the car to the max (thank goodness we got a big one!) and hit the highways again. Tried to locate the Ontario Mills Outlet Mall which should have been on our way but somehow missed it (bugger) and before long we're out in the desolate, barren countryside that is inland California. Drove on a 6 lane plus highway an average of 80 miles per hour all the way - plenty of cops out and about and generally the drivers are good. Tons and tons and tons of trucks on the road, plus we saw a massive long train which was loaded entirely with truck trailers. Had a stop off at Calico Ghost Town - good for a break but expensive and ... read more

From the driest area in the state to the wettest in a little over two hours, we rounded the east side of the Olympic Peninsula heading towards the Hoh rain forest. I must say, for being one of the few temperate rain forests worldwide, it was remarkably dry on the days we were there. Not that I am complaining, it's just that you don't expect an area that receives over 12 ft (3.6 m) of rain a year to be so....well, sunny. Had I done my research I would have learned that unlike tropical rain forests, temperate rain forests receive most of their water over the winter and spring, and the summer is characterized with mild, foggy days - a nice surprise from what I was expecting. There was definitely was a change in climate as ... read more

We've named our Carver Riviera "Better 2gether" We fueled up at the end of last week, YIKES... With the cost of fuel and the 2-80 gallon tanks, we will be taking our time heading south to conserve fuel. We saw our families and said our good byes over this past weekend. Leona and Dick gave us tomatoes, blue cheese dressing, and homemade cookies, YUMMY. Mom and I went grocery shopping yesterday, purchasing mainly canned foods, that will have a longer shelf life. We are doing final preparation on "Better 2gether". We changed the oil, filled the water tank and cleaned off the spider mess. We've been staying at the Keokuk Yacht Club for a few weeks. It has nice shower facilities, laundry and a quaint bar. The employees of the club and the locals are very ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: Some classic country from the 1960s. "Hello Walls" & "Wine Me Up" by Faron Young and "The Cold, Hard Facts of Life" & "Sorrow on the Rocks" by Porter Wagoner. Suggested Food & Drink for this Entry: A sliced pork sandwich on white toast and a Pepsi. After a few hours of driving two lane roads along the Missssippi, exploring state parks in two states, and a rather sobering visit to downtown Cairo, I was ready for lunch. I didn't plan on eating at Shemwell's. In fact, I'd never heard of it. I just stumbled upon it as I was driving north, heading out of Cairo. As soon as I saw Shemwell's sign painted on the side of its building, I made the turn into the parking lot, got out of ... read more

Passing Through Washington and Oregon The border crossing back into the U.S.A. was pretty non eventful. We just drove across they checked our plates and we were on our way. From the border Seattle was only a short distance away so we headed in parked up the van slightly out of town for a look around. Seattle seems a nice city but from where we parked and the route we walked in we don’t think we saw the best the city has to offer as the neighbourhood was a little rough. However, one we were in the main city and relaxed in a café everything was great. Outside the café we saw one of the funniest things we have ever seen. We heard some Al Green blasting out and turned around expecting to see a car ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: Let me attack this three ways. First, for historical context, listen to “The Cheater” by Bob Kuban and the In Men. Second, for a feel of the music heard at this show, find your city’s biggest name wedding/bar mitzvah band and sit through their versions of “We Are Family” and “Celebration". Third, I can’t leave you readers with a bad musical taste in your mouths, so give a listen to the CD Rockin’ Eighty-Eights by St. Louis piano players Johnnie Johnson, Clayton Love and Jimmy Vaughn. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Since we’re back in the Anheuser-Busch fatherland, let’s go with a bottles of Bud Light. For grub, grab something off a hot dog cart in a park. When I was in St. Louis the prior week, I had ... read more

Hi there again! Spent a few wonderful days in San Francisco which I am grateful for because it confirmed what I was hoping - that not all of America is like LA and Vegas. San Francisco is very cute - just as I remember it from the opening credits on Full House. All the little apartments on top of each other and the well known cable cars. I walked all over the CBD and harbour area on the first day which was painful because San Franciso is a myriad of hills, very steep hills. The next day I spent with a girl from Germany riding a bike around town, the waterfront and over the Golden Gate Bridge to a little community call Sausilto. Once again, hills. I was completely exhausted but well worth it. While I ... read more

We had to go into Grand Island to go to the Post Office and to the bank. We like the neat and tidy farms. Their yards all around the barns and outbuildings are clean and there's no junk piled up anywhere, no rusty old tractors, no piles of barbed wire, nothing. It must be their German heritage. They had large lawns. It looked like they just mowed whatever was growing and, voila, a lush, green lawn - and no sprinklers! We also liked the town of Grand Island. It was clean and the people were friendly. There were some signs in town that were in Spanish. We had coffee once in the Blue Moon. HaHa! The owner said that the economy there was all right. They had a meat-packing plant and there were two ethanol ... read more

Sunday night was a total bust! Stephen Cochrane one of my favourite artists was back in town for a 2 night stint at the Wildhorse Saloon. He played Saturday night for an hour but of course I was too busy getting kicked out of the Opry and sometimes you just can't be in two places at once. There was mixed information about his Sunday performance. The wildhorse website said that it was a private event yet Stephen himself said he went on at 8:30 and it was a $6 cover charge. We got to the Wildhorse and it was definitely closed I stuck my head in the gift shop and found out that there was some stuffy very formal looking dinner happening for cracker barrel employees. The sales person said we weren't the first ones who ... read more
