R: After Juneau, we headed down the coast to Seattle. There we met up Jo and Rob (I met Jo at Bristol - for those who don't know) who kindly put us up for a few days. She was firstly kind enough to collect us from the horrors of Seattle airport ( we are glad we have passed through for the last of our 3 times!). After a pretty traumatic night and flight, we took it easy in the afternoon. We hit the shore of the Puget sound which sits between Seattle and the further islands towards the Pacific as it isn't directly on the coast. We had terrific sunset here, Jo nearly fell in the water several times, and we realised we really were poor at skimming stones. We found a salmon slide which had ... read more

That morning I was a little apprehensive to leave the comfort of the hostel, it was drizzling rain outside and I was really getting out into unknown territory further than I had ever been by car. I loaded all my gear and set my bike up outside the hostel, just before I left I met a man who said he was from Kenya, when he shook my hand I saw how huge and rough his own hands were. He told me he had lost all his papers and was now sleeping in a tent and wanted to find a way to get to and live in Alaska. He asked me to buy him some food from a local Chinese store, I got him some tinned sardines and other cheap stuff, then gave him $10 in Canadian ... read more

Time to catch up...I left on this trip over two months ago now and here is how the story began. After doing some gutter cleaning around Vancouver, BC with my buddy Shiraz for a few weeks, my van being sold and putting everything I own in Canada into storage I got my tour bike sorted at a small store in downtown Vancouver called Ride on again who gave me a pretty good deal. Compared to the prices and availability at other stores I saved a bundle, I didn't need to have the best tour bike on the market for my first trip I don't want to spoil myself, possibly because I'm a glutton for punishment I don't know...Riding a bike loaded with your life for thousands of miles is big investment looking back I wonder now ... read more

I ended up traveling almost 12 hours in total to get from Tofino to Seattle, I was staying in the Freemont area of Seattle which is kind of hipstery and odd, but in a great way. My first morning I went on a walking tour of the bay area which was organised by the hostel. The guide was very good and had plenty of history and local lore to share. The tour ended just by Pike Market, where the first thing I checked out was the fish throwing, followed by gum alley. The fish throwing was cool, as the salmon was really big and first fishmonger tossed it across the stall to the other fishmonger, for weighing before it was tossed back again. Kind of silly but fun as everyone was cheering. Gum alley is just ... read more

Geo: 47.6353, -122.302Three thirty in the morning is way, way too early. I kept waking up because I was afraid my alarm wouldn't go off. Still, I felt reasonably well after four and a half hours of sleep. My taxi came on time, and we were to the airport in somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes. It was more expensive than the Metro but a bargain at only 12.33 leva, even though the driver seemed to have only a passing acquaintance with soap.Sofia Airport was already very busy, with a long line for security snaking across the hall. I'd been planning to get something for breakfast while waiting to board, but virtually nothing was open yet. So I got a bottle of water and sat at the gate, which smelled faintly of poo.Again, the flight was ... read more

Seattle and Portland We took the BoltBus from Vancouver to Seattle at 11:30. At the US border we all had to get off the bus and take all our belongings including our luggage and go through airport style security. We arrived at half 3. I booked us on for a Duck Tour at 17:30. Our tour guide was very funny and animated and played lots of songs loudly. We went on Lake Union for part of the tour, there are lots of houses that float on the water and he pointed out one that is owned by Jason Mesnick, who was the bachelor on The Bachelor. I got very excited about this which surprised him somewhat as I don’t think he gets many British people who watch The Bachelor. We ate dinner outside at Rock Bottom, ... read more

This album features several historic churches in Seattle. St James Cathedral: The need for a cathedral in Seattle arose in 1903 when the bishop of the then Diocese of Nesqually/Nisqually, moved the Episcopal see from Vancouver, Washington to Seattle. Construction began in 1905 and was completed in 1907. Major renovations were done in 1916 after the dome collapsed. Other major renovations were completed in 1950 & 1994. The cathedral, rectory, and site were designated city landmarks in 1984. Well this had already been an epic day, but I was not finished. I fancied a pint, so I found a place called the Taphouse. 160 beers on tap, I was overwhelmed. I ordered the Northwestern Sampler of 4 six-ounce glasses. I was disappointed with the offering. All but the RPM IPA were less than the Northwest's best I would say. After my beer break, I walked back to Pike's, but they were still not throwing fish. The place was packed and I hightailed down to the piers for a one-hour cruise around Elliott Bay. The cruise was cool. It offered some great views of the Seattle skyline and nearby islands. It was still in the low-80's and beautifully sunny. Our tour guide was very impressed, by the weather. It rained twice while I was here, ... read more

So I am not sure where to begin... This was a long, productive day. After going to bed early on Wednesday, I was up early on Thursday. I was a Pike's Place Market before the place really opened. No one was throwing fish, but I got to walk the market without much interference. It is a cool market, you could buy a bushel of flowers for $5, but I thought I would look weird walking around with flowers all day. I needed to eat breakfast, so I chose a cool place with a great view. It was probably the most expensive omelet I have ever had, Dungess crab. It tasted awesome. But my day was just beginning...... read more
