We recently purchased a Sprinter Van, converted to a camper van. My husband has been eyeing them for years. This year he decided to bite the bullet, spend most our savings and splurge on a van. I have to say I was a little perplexed by his need to buy one so soon. We had talked about when we retire. (That's at least 10 years away). Maybe this is his cure to the mid life crisis? Much better then a corvette. We have both been car campers most our lives. This is a step in luxury. We have gone on several excursions already. I have to admit its kinda nice just packing food and clothes and hopping in the van. When we arrive at our site there isn't the usual find a good tent spot and ... read more

This 2010 series was originally featured on the World is Round (WIR) photo-sharing site which went down last year, It is now defunct & all of photo journals & articles on that site are lost. My sister from Langley BC & I love Seattle (and Tacoma & Bellingham) & have visited several times. This visit was the most extensive so this series will feature several repeat photos from that visit with shorter captions. Seattle’s Chinatown-International District is an ethnic enclave neighborhood & the center of Seattle's Asian American community. The multiethnic neighborhood, which consists mainly of people who are of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino ethnicity, also has significant populations of people who are of Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Laotian, Cambodian, and Pacific Islander descent, as well as other communities. The Vietnamese enclave is east of Highway 5. ... read more

After two totally relaxing nights and a whole day and a half with Debs, feeling almost totally unwound and with newly sculpted arms (all arm flab gone from the weight of lifting both those cameras all week long), they dropped me off at King Station in Seattle for my journey down the rails to Los Angeles. Oh my..... I really had no feelings regarding this part of my trip - it was a add-on, an afterthought of sorts. But what a surprise. The station was beautiful! The benches were loooong wooden benches which were totally comfortable. I did not have long to wait until it was 'all aboard!" The thrum of the motors underfoot, the huge windows and the atmosphere has such a magic feel to it. I was told where to find my roomette - ... read more

After my incriminating trip to Las Vegas (which I am naturally not going to write about), I headed up North to Idaho. I love saying the name of that state. Idaho! It's a fun name to shout when your'e a candidate for Miss USA. Basically it's all desert from Vegas to Idaho. If a zombie apocalypse were to happen I'd go to Nevada because they have so much space there and very few people. Hence less chances of zombie encounters. One should have a plan for a zombie apocalypse and that's mine. I miss watching The Walking Dead. I stopped by a small town called Eli, and there was nothing there. I used to think if I could just go to America, I wouldn't mind if I had to live in the middle of nowhere as ... read more

I made the decision.....I decided to quit my job and go travelling! Being disabled, I wasn’t sure I’d get another chance. I took the redundancy package that was offered and bought a one way ticket to Seattle (from London). All I had booked was my first three nights accommodation and a 45 day Amtrak ticket – I was going to make the rest up as I went along….. Over 4600 miles from home, with only my sister on the same continent (New York), I was going to travel across the USA and see her. I was going to stop at all the major cities and soak up as much US culture as I could..... To keep in contact with my friends, I updated facebook with my travels. When I returned, many of my friends had had ... read more

The trip to Seattle was almost overwhelming. The scenery from the dome view keeps me totally entertained. We live in a truly expansive and varied country, it’s amazing it’s kept all together. I was met by my new extended family, taken to lunch, tour of city, dinner, bed at Carroll’s and taken back to the train. Actually I arrived at the terminal, retrieved my bag and began trying to reach the number Duke had given me, without success. I consulted with the info guy re: nearest Apple Store to fix computer. Just as I as contemplating my next move, a woman (looking like my friend Queen) came through the door and called my name. That was Carroll, the grandmother. In the car were Etta and Rhyen, at the house, Al and Dog. What a warm and ... read more

Our friends bailed on us for this trip, but that didn't discourage Kristina and I from flying across the country to return to a city we were both familiar with and very fond of. The allure of Seattle drew us back for another taste of its food and natural setting, making this the first time we've ever repeated a destination. What isn't a surprise: Seattle is currently the fastest growing metropolitan area in America, attracting residents and visitors to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, whether for the first time or for life. The Emerald City is nestled between Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west, with Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains to the east. It was settled in the mid-1800s, but exploded in size during the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska during the late ... read more
