I had actually forgotten about Paul Allen's Experience Music Project (EMP) until a lady at the baseball game suggested it as a good activity. I am glad that she did, because so far it was one of the highlights of the trip. The idea behind the museum is to learn about music history in a very open, interactive environment. Plus, the EMP had additional exhibits of horror, fantasy, Sci-Fi and of course Star Wars... They charge you extra for the Star Wars stuff. (Paul is a pretty smart guy.) It was mostly worth the extra few bucks. It was costumes from all six films, but in my opinion it leaned too much on the later, more elaborate (and not nearly as good) films. Highlights included Princess Leia in the gold bikini and an eight-foot Chewbacca. All ... read more

I have been to nearly 450 Giants games. I think Dyl and I had a no no go into the seventh once. On August 12th, 2015 I visited Safeco Field for probably the only time in my life and Hisashi Iwakuma throws only the 5th no hitter in Mariners history. (By the way, the Giants have had five going back to Jonathan's Sanchez's like 6 years ago. It's a golden age, people!) But congrats to Iwakuma and hey, I guess it was nice to get on the board with one. The sad thing is I hardly noticed it was happening and I almost left. As I have said it is not my team and I went mostly to experience another ballpark. Safeco was the last on my list of West Coast MLB venues. I had a ... read more

It's 12.14 on the 25th July. Currently we are sitting on the train to San Francisco, but for this blog I will write about our last 3 days in The Emerald City. Wednesday started as usual, we got up for an early-ish breakfast - about 8.30 - then got ready for 12. In the meantime I ran down the seafront to a set outdoor chin-up and dip bars that had been installed a fair way down the promenade. I spent half an hour doing a little body-weight training there, then ran back to the hostel. By the time I had caught my breathe and showered, it was 12 noon. The plan was to walk up to a district of Seattle called Fremont, to explore the area and see the Troll statue under the bridge there. The ... read more

It's 12.44 on the 24th July. It's been a little while since I've written a blog - we've packed our days so full here in Seattle - but hopefully I can write and upload one today, then another one whilst on the train to San Fran tomorrow. So, I think I left off on Saturday evening, so I pick up from Sunday morning. We all got up and had breakfast before everything was tidied away at 9am, then got ready to go out at 12. The plan for the day was to head down 5th into Downtown Seattle to explore. We left and walked the 10 or so blocks to where 5th intersects with Union, Pike and Pine streets, and the main shopping section begins. From there, we decided to split up as everyone wanted to ... read more

It's 21.58 on the 19th July. So we're now settling into our hostel in Seattle, and getting used to seeing the Stars and Stripes over the Maple Leaf for the first time in nearly 4 months. In this blog I will write about our last day in Victoria, arriving in Seattle, and our first full day here. So Thursday was our final full day in Victoria, and Canada for that matter, so both Donna and Bob had taken the day off. We got up and ready to leave for 3pm, when we were going to head into town to go on the Pickle Boat Pub Crawl for the evening. Before we left, Rosie and I walked up to the plaza to print a photo of us all at the zip lining place and buy a frame ... read more

We took it easy today. A nice change, let me tell you! We packed ourselves up after two pleasant nights at the Best Western hotel in Edmonds and set out on our way. Our first stop was just 20 minutes later, at Carkeek park. Yeah, funny name, I know, but a lovely little park. We followed a creek down towards the beach, crossed a bridge over the railroad tracks and spent the better part of two hours wandering along the beach of Puget Sound. We found all sorts of treasures on the dark, almost black sand. Shells, seaweed, hermit crabs, lots of sea anemones and barnacles, even a starfish! All living and well in the tide pools. Lots of crows and seagulls searched for pickings between the rocks. We even saw a blue heron fishing in ... read more

Ok, I guess I owe y'all another two days' worth of blog. I'll start with yesterday, July 13th. We left the Ramada at Harrison Hot Springs (a very poor hotel), did a little souvenir shopping and made our way towards the USA. On the way we saw lots of raspberry-like bushes along the roadside, and even saw someone who stopped on an adjacent street complete with hat and gloves picking berries. Needless to say, we stopped at the first available opportunity and filled our bellies with delicious, juicy, sweet raspberries (or blackberries, I dunno. Tasty berries). Just a few minutes later we were at the border crossing. The wait wasn't too long, I guess we were lucky. Just 15 minutes or so. The border police who checked our passports had a little chat with us, advised ... read more

The last eight years in the PNW have been full of adventures and memories, after all this is where we met. But as Justin and I transition into the next chapter we had an itch to do something different, so we both left our jobs at the end of May with no set plans of what we would do next. We have been lucky to spend the last month hanging out with family and friends, enjoying the convenience of being able to paddleboard in the middle of the day on Shilshole Bay, and not waking up to an alarm or fighting daily rush hour traffic to get to work. We're setting out to make new memories and enjoy some of the best of what the lower 48 has to offer before rejoining the real world.... read more

We survived the bus ride back to our motel, a second night sleeping in Seattle after a day of sightseeing, and ordered a taxi to take us to Pier 91 in the morning at 10 AM. We had a very enthusiastic, and helpful, and funny, and talkative elderly porter from Jamaica who helped us get our bags from the taxi to check-in (seeing to it the bags were properly marked as our half hand done tags showing the cabin did not include the floor on the Statendam). And his energy and cheer was rewarded with twice what we would have normally tipped, because he was just what we both needed to see to it that this cruise started out on a high note, unlike the customs ordeal we endured in Vancouver just over one week ago. ... read more
