Now that my school year has come to an end, Robert and I are preparing for take-off to Europe. We just spent a day in Seattle and leave for Frankfurt, Germany tomorrow where we'll be meeting my friend, Marie. Before we depart, I thought I'd share a few pictures from today and from last year's trip to Europe when we met during study abroad in Angers, France :)... read more

Sharon survived sleeping in Seattle. Despite her initial uneasiness with the area we found ourselves, and, how did she put it, “Didn’t you find the desk clerk kind of creepy?” Well, okay, he did have that Norman Bates thing going on. Initially it would not have taken much to convince her to brave another taxi ride to find another place to stay; but, once we were back in the room to eat our Jack-in-the-Box burgers, she settled in with the internet. The tour we’d planned for tomorrow doesn’t pick up from hotels in “this part of town”; but, Sharon found that the bus-line to downtown picks up right across the street from us. So we had a plan. We were at the bus stop early. Sharon’s practicing what the priests sermonize about being too judgmental was ... read more

Our journey to our Alaskan cruise actually began almost two weeks ago. It really shouldn’t take that long to get from Ohio to Vancouver; but, then you’ve never travelled with Sharon. First we had to fly to Seattle so that we could drive to Portland and spend most of the first week with Sharon’s mom. She currently lives with her youngest son Sean; or as Erin (Sharon’s much, much younger sister) would say, Sean is Sharon’s much, much, much younger brother (he’s also Erin’s much, much younger brother); but then you know what they say about what payback is. Sharon used to introduce Erin as her much, much younger sister (at least that’s the way that Erin remembers it). My wife has an excellent memory and this is provable by some of her amazing scores on ... read more

This album features photos from two of my favorite neighborhoods in Seattle, both of which need further extensive exploring ;o) QUEEN ANNE NEIGHBORHOOD Queen Anne Hill is a neighborhood & geographic feature in Seattle northwest of downtown. The neighborhood sits on the highest named hill in the city with a maximum elevation of 456 feet. The hill became a popular spot for the city's early economic & cultural elite to build their mansions, & the name derives from the architectural style typical of many of the early homes. Lots of extra info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Anne,_Seattle http://www.visitseattle.org/neighborhoods/queen-anne/ Historical society web site with many photos of historic residences etc incl slide show: http://qahistory.org/ CAPITOL HILL NEIGHBORHOOD Capitol Hill is a densely populated residential district in Seattle. Memorial Weekend we headed to our family cabin on Maggie Lake. We traveled by bikes with our panniers loaded. This was a practice run for me before we head to Spain. Friday afternoon we took the Fauntleroy/Southworth Ferry to Port Orchard. In Port Orchard we stopped at the public market for some beef sticks and a delicious hemp milk, spinach and fruit smoothie. Out of Port Orchard we biked towards hwy 16 to make our way to hwy 3 towards Belfair. I was not prepared to cross all 4 lanes of hwy 16 on our bikes. Instead we hiked up a steep embankment with our bikes and crossed a railroad tressel. Not sure if it was the easiest way. But it was sure a lot safer. Once we arrived on the old Belfair Hwy there was ... read more

Yummy :-) Natürlich ... read more

Starbucks et al Headed off from San Francisco with good and bad memories. Loved exploring and using the Bus network to find our way around. What saddened me was the homeless/crazy people that fill the place. Anyway, north to Seattle. We drove off with little or no idea what tonight would present but after looking at maps we decided to drive up the I5 until we veered off and headed to a town called Klamath Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klamath_Falls,_Oregon) and for no other reason than it had a hotel full of dead animals. The Olympic Inn (http://www.olympicinn.com/) was full of wood and stuffed animals, most of which the owner had purchased from a taxidermist to decorate his hotel, so not a trophy wall as such. Inclusive in the price was soup and salad at 4:30 and cookies ... read more

Ballard is an historic neighborhood located in the NW part of Seattle. Its main landmark is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (known locally as the "Ballard Locks"). The city of Ballard officially (but reluctantly) became part of Seattle in May 1907. Ballard has been the traditional center of Seattle's ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community who were drawn to the area because of the salmon fishing opportunities. Ballard’s Nordic Heritage Museum, celebrates both the community of Ballard and the local Scandinavian history. Locals once nicknamed the neighborhood "Snoose Junction," a reference to the Scandinavian settlers' practice of using snus (snuff).
