South Dakota today. The prairies really are unending. Two scenic overlooks in 450 miles and the views were spectacular, one particularly awesome. Again the weather was spectacular; 77 to 80 degrees but with the windows opened and no air conditioner ruunning, we were very comfortable. The air here is really clean and, well . . . sweet. And the wind blows almost constantly. We lunched at a road side rest area comfortably in a constant light breeze. The ranches are huge and the grain silos and hay bales are everywhere. The cattle are the healthiest looking beef and dairy cattle that I can ever remember seeing. The soil is black and probably could grow concrete if there were seeds for it! At Mitchell we found the world's only Corn Palace. The building is decorated each year ... read more

So we're in day four of Beale family vacation, day two of Keystone, South Dakota, and day one of Caitlin's blogging extravaganza. Surprisingly enough nobody in our family has strangled anyone and Rebecca hasn't encountered any physical harm...yet. Yesterday we went to the Crazy Horse memorial thing and after spending about an hour in the huge museum none of us ever really figured out what exactly he was famous for. Anyway, a sculpture of him on his horse is being carved into a mountain, similar to Mt. Rushmore. They've been working on it for about 60 years and all that's completed is his face, so it's hard to say if I'll ever see it completed on my lifetime. Today we went to Bear Country, which is like a drive-through zoo. There were lots of different animals ... read more

Monday, June 16th: Well, the car needed an oil change and since Lewis was the first one up, he took care of it. Really, he was nearly back before Bethany and I were even out of bed. The three of us grabbed breakfast in the hotel and hit the road. The goal of today was to get on over to Custer, South Dakota, which is just spitting distance from Mount Rushmore. Really just a nice, long drive today. The coolest part of the drive was our accidental discovery of a monument to Abraham Lincoln on I-80 (formerly US-30), known as the “Lincoln Highway” as it was the first road to traverse the continent from coast to coast. It was a big bust of Lincoln atop a stone base at the highest point of the highway. Completely ... read more

Road trip. While in Memphis we realised that were travelling across America faster than we had intended. We were also feeling frustrated with being limited only to the cities that the Greyhound buses visited and then being restricted by poor public transport. It was time to get a car and go on a road trip. One of the places we had both wanted to see in America was Mount Rushmore. We consulted our map and decided we should go to Dallas and set out from there. Luckily the bus we got was fairly quiet as the journey from Memphis was 8 hours. After a night in a motel, we took a cab to the car rental office and picked up our Chevvy HHR. Not the prettiest looking car but it was economic which was important as ... read more

Our next motel appeared in the form of a studio style with kitchen etc. for the bargain price of $41.99 our cheapest digs so far in America all with the help of a little voucher in a coupon book, our new accommodation bible! This was just on the outskirts of Denver which is the mile high city as it is officialy 1 mile above sea level (well what else did you think we meant). After settling in we headed into the city centre to see what we could do for a couple of days as our room was soooo nice and Denver has a backdrop of the snow capped rocky mountains it was surely too nice to leave too soon. We managed to park for free and headed to the tourist info along a nice pedestrianised ... read more

Well, the Dunns have been busy travelers since our last blog. We drove fourteen hours yesterday which was approximately 842 miles. Our entire travel distance thus far has totaled 1,291.8 miles. Our average driving speed has been 61.2 miles per hour. (Tony is giving me these stats off of Garmin while he drives. You all know - he’s the numbers guy.) The girls were incredible travelers all day yesterday despite the grueling travel conditions. Overall, it was a great day to drive cross country, but the weather posed some challenges. The wind was pretty mighty at times. I told the girls that it felt as if our little orange lunch box, that’s what I’ve nicknamed the Westy, was going to get blown right off of the highway. Yesterday, most of the drive was green fields and ... read more

Dunns do Mt. Rushmore!

Last night was a first for us, it was our very first night spent at a camp ground! I think we all went into mini comas when our heads hit the pillows because the next day nobody could remember falling asleep. We've been going non-stop since we left Stockbridge and it was nice to settle in somewhere and get some good sleep. We got up bright and early and headed for the "community showers". This was a new experience for us and I wasn't sure how it would go. We get to the building and the shower stalls are not divided into male/female rooms. Everybody gets to shower in the same building and in the same stalls. Me and girls decided we didn't really like this much plus the stalls were really small and we had ... read more

The Dunns are officially on the road. We left home yesterday at 3 PM and drove until 10. We were able to drive 400 miles. The girls have been great so far! Maddie has spent most of her time reading and making travel bingo for the family. Julia has been doing what she does best - snacking! The heat was a little tough on us ( just me) for a while, but then it cooled down. Our final destination last night was a campground on the Illinois/Iowa border called Lundeen’s Landing. The only problem was that it was completely flooded. We tried to talk the girls into sleeping in their bathing suits, but they weren’t interested. Tony did find a dry camping spot down the road where we were able to crash for the night. After ... read more

We had planned to stay at Oahe Downriver State Park until June 15, 2008, but because of the mounting cost of fuel, we decided to leave early; so we departed Oahe Monday, May 19, 2008 and headed to Deadwood, South Dakota. If fuel continues to rise, as is expected, we were concerned that if we stayed at Oahe for another month before we continued traveling if was going to start to get very expensive. We have already canceled our trip to Alaska because of the high cost of fuel, which is very disappointing. The drive to Deadwood was not too long and we arrived the same day. We stayed at Fish n' Fry RV Park, a very nice, although small park. It is an older park, therefore, the sites are quite close together. We met the ... read more

Eight years ago I would have never thought that I would spend my 8th Wedding Anniversary on top of a huge rock formation in Badlands National Park, South Dakota !! The whole day was one to be remembered. We started off with our traditional bath at the local Flying J Truck Stop and then we were off to feed these cute furry creatures at Prairie Dog Town. On the way to see the prairie dogs we stopped off at a hole-in-the wall restaurant called The Haven Inn Cafe for food. The girls and I went in to get a table while Tim went to the restroom and to stretch his legs. Before he was finished in the little boys room, we were already on our way out the door ! Emily, Kayla and I walked up ... read more
