Today started off as your typical vacation day. We woke up around 8:30 and headed towards the nearest "Truck Stop" for our daily cleansings. The girls seemed to handle it much better today, after all, they had about 24 hours for the shock to wear off !! They were very excited to find out that they actually got to sleep in a state rest area last night instead of the Wal-Mart parking lot. We left the showers and proceeded to the closest Wal-Mart to stock up on several things that were still needed. I am happy to say that we are now all the proud owners of our very own, fullly stocked, SHOWER BUCKETS, complete with color coordinated sponges and flip flops !! I really think we have it all now ! (Until tomorrow when we ... read more

Strange Vignettes... As a group, we do tend to confuse people. In response to a query about Ruth by the FBO counter staffer in Sheridan, Dick declared, "My wife? No, that's not my wife. Her husband left her in Portland..." Thursday 29 May: Sheridan WY to Black Hills / Spearfish SD Bob Hawkins awoke badly in need of chiropractic help. His back had been putting him in a lot of pain, and how do you find a good nearby chiropractor on no notice in a strange town? Judy mulled this matter while she headed out on an early run to buy postcards at Wal-Mart. It was remarkable how often our accommodations were near a Wal-Mart...and how often we really needed things and could get them conveniently! Time after time, this King of the Big Box ... read more

These are some of the places we visited while staying at Oahe: Oahe Chapel (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) - In 1874, Reverend Thomas L. Riggs, a Congregationalist minister and his first wife, Cornelia Margaret Foster, established the Oahe Mission to serve the Sioux Indians of central South Dakota. It was built on the site of an old Arikara Indian village called Ti Tanke Ohe, later shortened to "Oahe." The name of the mission was eventually given not only to the mission, but also to the dam and lake that now cover the site. In the beginning, a log house was the center of the mission. By 1877, the house had become too small, and the Indians agreed to help Reverend Riggs build a chapel, which was finished by September of the same ... read more

We started doing our volunteer work on Monday, April 20. It was very, very cold that morning and I was saying to myself "what in &#$% am I doing in South Dakota this time of the year." I was so bundled up it looked like I was dressed to be working in the Arctic, and I was still cold. It stayed cold almost every day, same conditions -- cold, overcast and windy -- there were also days when it was drizzly and damp. As it turned out, according to the rangers who live here, spring was a long time coming this year. We did quite a bit of work on the archery range trail and finished most days, tired. We decided to work four 6-hour days and have three days off, since we were supposed to ... read more

The Badlands was our destination after Minneapolis. After the most boring drive of the trip (and windiest!!) we ended up in some of the most beautiful territory we've ever seen. It was also incredibly different than anything we've ever seen. The first night, we stayed in a campground in the Badlands....but after torrent winds that shook our tent so badly we couldn't sleep, we gave up and slept in a hotel in Wall, South Dakota, home of Wall Drug, the next night. Wall Drug was pretty interesting, to say the least. We explored plenty of the Badlands and it was up there as one of the top places on the trip....and definitely worth staying for an extra day. The pictures do not do it justice, keep in mind. Animals we saw included: coyote, big horned sheep, ... read more

I've visited Falls Park in Sioux Falls before whenever I have free time when working in the area, I try to get back for another visit. Such a great hidden treasure. Several waterfalls make up the Park and there are several viewing areas throughout. Also has walking and biking trails in and through the Park. Lots of green spots to picnic or enjoy the scenery. The Big Sioux River cuts through the rock in the park exposing it in areas. The Falls Park Tower (5 stories) can be accessed for free and has great views of the Park as well as the Catholic Church. Absolutely wonderful.... read more

We had one more major stop on our list and that was Mount Rushmore. First though we took a quick tour of The Little Big Horn battle site where general Custer and his men were soundly defeated by Cheyenne and Sioux warriors in 1876. We then settled for the night at a campground in South Dakota where they had a really neat feature. In the evening, after dark, they had a resident native person, (I think he was Lakota), who gathered campers around a huge campfire and regaled us with legends of his people. He was a wonderful storyteller and he had everyone, adults as well as children, fascinated by his tales. The next morning we headed for the black hills and the famous heads. I must say they are quite impressive, these gigantic carvings of ... read more

Just a few words before I leave, mostly just to play with this and figure out how things work... So yeah, my last couple of days at home have been very relaxing, I still don't think that I have quite realized that I'm leaving the country in 2 days! I'm very not ready, I havent started thinking about packing, and of course I'm most 'freaked out' about not having anything planned for New Zealand. It looks as though my travel guide book I ordered will not being arriving.. perhaps ever.. The first book not to arrive from half.com and of course it was one I really needed. I could live without silent spring.. but it looks like I will be stopping at Barnes and Noble tomorrow and spending a lot more on a book than ... read more

These are some photos of the RV Park where we are staying at Oahe Downriver State Park. It is one of three campgrounds located within the state park. It is campground #3 and is the smallest of the three. Since we are volunteers, we are on a site that has full hookups (electric, water and sewer). However, the only other site to have full hookups is the one which will be used by the Campground Hosts, all the other campsites have only electricity. The Campground Hosts are not here yet, but should be coming in around the middle of May. Since our electric hookup provides 50 amp service, we are able to use any and all appliances we choose at the same time - lights, heaters, washer/dryer, microwave, whatever. When there is only 30 amp service, ... read more
