I left my camera in the car, so this will just be a quick update with no pictures. Monday(10/24), we crossed into South Dakota at the Rosebud Indian Reservation. We stopped at the Fire & Rescue Department so Ken could trade some patches from Dutch Harbor & we ended up talking to the acting Fire Chief, Gene, who gave us some good information about the area & some good tips about scenic drives through the reservation. On Tuesday (10/25), we headed to the Wounded Knee Massacre memorial. Ken & I spent some time at the memorial marking the mass grave - looking at the rolling hills studded with ponderosa pine & trying to image what it must have been like at that time. Afterwards, we headed to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where we met Ric ... read more

Three more sleeps… Not that we are getting bored or anything, just a little road weary perhaps. We drove a long way today, through South Dakota. We started early this morning in Wyoming, and have ended our day in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which is almost on the border with Minnesota. Today’s fun excursions included a drive south of the I-90 through Deadwood Gulch, to see Crazy Horse, a similar carving project to Rushmore. The thing that makes Crazy Horse so unique… they’ve been working on it for 55 years and it is still not done, and doesn’t even look close to done! To be fair, the size and magnitude of Crazy Horse is at least five times the size of Rushmore. We’re hoping it might be completed in our lifetime! Mount Rushmore was “as advertised”, ... read more

We packed up camp this morning and headed off for a mud bath in a river on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The drivers told us the mud in the river was the same as the mud you get at a top spa. We were still two days away from our next shower, so I decided not to get in. But that didn't stop me from laughing at the others when they were covered in mud from head to toe. In the afternoon we went to the South Dakota Badlands. The landscape was straight out of a John Wayne movie. It was really hard to believe. We first stopped off at an old Western town that used to be thriving when the railroad used to go through. Then in the afternoon we drove through a bunch ... read more

It's legs Another brief entry before I crash. Currently I am in South Dakota, and this has been my first opportunity to update for a few days. We finally got off the 90 E, and onto 29 S. We've traveled a total of around 1000 miles. Only 900 more to go. =) Driving through Montana and Wyoming was so beautiful. Once we got past the badlands of South Dakota it was just the plains- which I’ve decided are called that with good reason. I wish I could tell you about all the interesting things we did and visited along the road. But as we didn’t really do or visit anything interesting it’d probably be more informative to tell you of all the things we didn’t see ;) Mount Rushmore (hopefully on the trip back at the ... read more

"NOT EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE COUNTED IS WORTH COUNTING. NOT EVERYTHING THAT COUNTS CAN BE COUNTED." A. EINSTEIN June 4, 2005, Saturday. The morning was gray and rainy as we drove west toward the Badlands NP . Both the Indians and the French/Canadian called this “bad land to travel across”, and indeed it is. As we approached, the ocean of prairie is transformed into a jumble of wilderness of badlands. About 75 million years ago the earth’s climate was warmer and a shallow sea covered the region we call the Great Plains. In today’s Badlands the bottom of the sea appears as sedimentary rock. This layer is a rich source of fossils. The Badlands contains nearly 60 species of grasses. It is ironic. This land of sharp ridges, steep-walled canyons, gullies, pyramids and knobs has ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota » Rapid City April 28th 2005

We went to a place that many tourists to the US would not dare visit - Rapid City, South Dakota. Not exactly the nicest city in the world, Rapid City is typical middle America - old school diners with artery clogging grub, sprawling shopping malls full of fat people and McMansions everywhere. The people in South Dakota seemed to talk slower than those in the more touristy areas of the USA. Why did we go to Rapid City? Because it is the closest major city to check out Mount Rushmore. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is bigger than you could every imagine - a massive carving into the granite face of Mount Rushmore. It features 18 metre sculptures of the heads of former US Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. The memorial park is just as massive ... read more

I was the lucky winner of being pulled aside to be checked by customs. He took one look at my stuffed pack and just asked me what was in it. I said that it was my dirty laundry, and he said, “I’ll take your word for it.” It is a good think that I’m not a cocaine smuggler! It was a long two days of traveling - I was pretty much sick of transportation by this point. It feels good to be home, but I already miss my toilet paper carrying days where “Donde esta el bano?” is a very scary question and the land of cold showers. I must admit that I think I’ve fallen in love with South America and I can’t wait to return! Even though it was only 15 days, it was ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota » Badlands September 1st 2000

Traveling with the rest of the Wiriadisastras without Fika was very interesting. We decided to road trip to South Dakota from Iowa, it was a good distance trip and a good cause as well; none of us had been in South Dakota before. I started to do a little research on what to do in the state, but of course I've always had wanted to see the Mt. Rushmore; who doesn't? But anyway, we drove though the Badlands, where the "devil" supposed to pass, thus it was named "les mauvaises Terres" - the Badlands, by French explorers. It almost felt like passing through movie stage, with fake colorful hills and unreal, just like Daly paintings. Quote from Frank Lloyd Wright, what I saw gave me an indescribable sense of mysterious otherwhere - a distant architecture, ethereal, ... read more
