In Mitchell, SD we went in to town for dinner and to explore the town. I had heard about The Corn Palace and wanted to see it. We were not the only tourists walking around it and taking pictures that evening. The Corn Palace was built in 1892. Corn is the region’s most important product and the Corn Palace was built to honor it. The murals are redesigned each year and it takes 2,000 bushels of corn and 40 tons of other grains to decorate the murals. I wonder what the murals look like later in the year, as there were birds already trying to gather some of the seeds. According to some literature on the Corn Palace it is a multi use facility hosting dances, circuses, concerts, basketball games, Polka Festival, rodeo, DakotaFest and the ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 42 23rd April - 6th May 2007 From the Rockies to Nebraska and South Dakota - and the sad demise of Suzie, our friend and bear. Rocky Mountain National Park There seemed little point in waiting for the snow to come to Rocky Mountain National Park, leaving us with the prospect of sitting out the days awaiting the thaw. Two feet of snow was forecast and that was enough to convince us to move on rather more rapidly than previously intended. We had enjoyed our short stay; the awesome sight of magnificent mountains of the Continental Divide sawing a sharp line through the state: 58 jagged white peaks over 14,000ft stretching their heads into the sky, herds of elk and deer on the hills, fleeting flocks of bluebirds on the meadows, ... read more

Note: This entry has a lot of photos so keep advancing to the next page until done. You won't want to miss some of the images! I’ve been looking forward to coming to South Dakota all trip long. How can one go wrong with the Corn Palace, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Wall Drug, and Crazy Horse all in one state? We’re also back in cool neon sign country. There was a dearth of them in the South for some reason. Sioux Falls has a nice compact business district with late nineteenth and early twentieth century brick buildings. We have a good breakfast at the Phillips Avenue Diner. My search for gloves continues as we walk over to the Great Outdoor Store after breakfast. They only have men’s winter gloves and they are way too big. ... read more

And now for the final installment of our Mother/Daughter Summer 2006 Trip. If you ever want to see the July 4th firework show at Mount Rushmore you must be willing to spend a long time waiting. While we were waiting we enjoyed listening to several wonderful music groups. One of our favorites was a Native American Band named Brulee. We also spent time enjoying the museum and film about the building of Mount Rushmore. We arrived at 9 am and left the park around midnight. The fireworks were spectacular, really worth the wait...it was the highlight of our whole trip!! The next day we visited Bear Country USA, a drive-thru wildlife sanctuary. There were many animals native to the area including wolves, buffalo, elk and of course lots of bear. After driving through the park we enjoyed ... read more

Day 1 Winnipeg MB Watertown SD - +/-600KM We finally left Ile Des Chenes at 2:30pm on Saturday, I had woken up with a slight headache from a bit too much wine with my sisters and their husbands the night before so I was in no hurry to get ready to leave. I cooked breakfast for my sister's kids, I then drove into WPG to pick up Carlo, who had not been tied down in his room 'never to leave' by his mother, so we could start packing the truck for our Not North road trip. After our first atempt at leaving, 20kms out we realized we forgot the wireless modem and dads mail, we were sucessfull. Truck was packed; camp stove, check; sleeping bags, check; satelite radio, check; money, passports, etc, check, check; my ... read more

Once again unfortunately we do not have any pictures of the badlands.... sorry. Although we did not spend much time in the park due to a rain and wind storm the park was extremely different than any other park we have seen to date. Although the colors of the Badlands were comparable to the Petrified forest (see previous blog) the landscape was much different. They remind me of drip sand castles you make at the beach tinted with hues of red, orange and pink. We also made a stop at the Corn Palace in South Dakota. The Palace is decorated each year with different pieces of artwork all made from corn. At that point we decided we were through with the midwest and needed some civilization. We therefore headed to Chicago. We spent the night in ... read more

Due to a tragic event happening to the camera, the amount of pictures we can share will be limited for the next few days... We apologize for the inconvenience :-) Today we went to Mt Rushmore. This is the place where they have the faces of 4 presidents carved into a granite mountain. This idea started with the South Dakota people trying to find a way to promote their otherwise fairly boring state. The 4 that have been carved in the mountain are the following: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The size of the carving is mind boggling. After this visit, we made our way through the Iron Mountain Road, a twisty road built only for enjoying the scenery. The tunnels on this road were strategically placed so that each one perfectly ... read more
