We traveled 545 miles today from La Crosse, Wisconsin over the Mississippi River, into the southern part of Minnesota, over the Missouri River, over into Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and finally ended up in the small town of Kadoka, SD near the Badlands for the evening. There really wasn't much to see after the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota. I would like to explore the lakes and Minneapolis when I have more time as there was a lot of advertisements and much more to see in those areas. We stopped in Sioux Falls to see the water falls and mill that surrounds it and to grab a bite to eat. I was surprised to find a Turkey pesto panini sandwich on the menu at the falls cafeteria. Very delicious! The falls were very pretty so we ... read more

We started off the day with horseback riding at the Rafter J Ranch (thanks again to the Grimes for recommending this campground...it is great!). Emma, Rachel and I went...they didn't have enough horses for Shawn to go so he stayed back. Rachel didn't want to wear a helmet because it would mess up her hair. However, I kept having visions of Christopher Reeve, so I made her wear it. It was a nice way to see part of the National Forrest and we enjoyed it. After horseback riding, we headed to Mt. Rushmore. It was very impressive. We took the walking tour, which gave us lots of different views of the monument. It also included the sculptor's workshop, with a presentation from a ranger about how the work was completed. Emma voluntered to demonstrate how they ... read more

Well, I finally got my computer and can now update you guys. Tommy & I made it through 10 states (including VA). So, it was VA, WV, KY, IN, IL, MO, IA, NE, SD, & WY. We went to the Badlands National Park and to Mt. Rushmore in SD. We stopped along the way to see Crazy Horse, went to the towns of Custer and Keystone (both SD). We also did a train ride in Keystone with an old engine. We stayed in Omaha, NE our first night at horrible motel. But, when we got to Rapid City, we stayed in a very nice hotel. Rapid City was sort of our base; it is a good size city with about 20,000 people. Big enought for a Walmart, Kohls, Target, a small mall, movie theatre, Best Buy, ... read more

Whilst heading into the Black Hills of Dakota, we decided to visit Mount Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Memorial, Bedrock and Four Mile Town. Black Hills National Forest The Black Hills area has a rich, diverse cultural heritage. Archaeological evidence suggests the earliest known use of the area occurred about 10,000 years ago. Later Native Americans, such as the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Lakota, came to the Black Hills to seek visions and to purify themselves. The Black Hills was also a sanctuary where tribes at war could meet in peace. (Sky-piercing granite peaks and forested mountains dominate the skyline of western South Dakota. America's oldest mountains rose above the surrounding flatlands 60 million years ago, at about the time the dinosaurs disappeared. Even after eons of erosion their granite peaks still soar as high... read more

Today we headed to the Badlands. But first we called into the world famous "Wall Drug". It had to be done! After reading so much about the place and seeing the numerous sign posts for it along the way. We weren't disappointed. Skim got to indulge in a bit of retail therapy for a change. And I got to sit with a couple of long drinks, before taking some fun photos.... (Ted Hustead was a Nebraska native who moved to Wall and opened a tiny drug store in 1931. Five years later, it was still a tiny drug store. Dorothy, Ted's wife, thought that the travelers driving past their store must be thirsty, and suggested that Ted put up a sign outside of town advertising free ice water at Wall Drug. Ted thought it was ... read more

To make these postings more coherent and less spastic I am breaking them up into several different topics... That said, this last week was spent in Custer SD, (15 minutes or so from Mt Rushmore) enjoying a wide variety of experience and adventure- not the least of which was the wonderful people we met. Having never been much of a social butterfly I expected this trip to be defined by its solitude and asceticism- embracing the simple life, living off of the radar so to speak, spending little, and seeing much. Not unlike every other plan I ever tried to make, this changed within hours of our arrival in Custer. Initially the plan looked like this- Arrive in Custer on Friday , stay the weekend at French Creek Campground/RV park then move on to a primitive ... read more
