At this point Jim and I were really ready to go home. The heart of the trip was over and we were on our last ounce of energy. Traveling really takes a lot out of a person. We left the hotel the next morning, and after a hardy breakfast, started on the long drive to Mount Rushmore. Mount Rushmore was a short stop. It took us about an hour and a half to see the mountain carving, and to go on a walking tour with a ranger along Presidential Trail. We got to see the originial model of Mount Rushmore that the artist used. Pretty cool. Next we drove on to Badlands National Park. This is such a unique place. It's like a cut up Grand Canyon. There are peaks and valleys, vibrant colors, grassy meadows, ... read more

I'm not physically in South Dakota today, but that's where all thought is leading me. I'm feeling bad that I'm not in Howard right now. My family is all together, celebrating my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary at St. Agatha Catholic Church. There is mass in their honor, followed by goodies and fellowship in the church hall. It just makes me sad knowing there are Scott shenanigans going on right now and I'm not there to be part of it. To make up for my absence and to make me feel better, I'm going to tell you about the big family party we had for Mom and Dad before we left. Jeff and I rented our house in St. Peter for mid-July, but didn't leave for Sweden until August 4th. We thought the interim would be a ... read more

Heading to the Highway
They're here!

We were pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the Black Hills. National forests, granite mountains, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the stunningly beautiful Custer State Park are found along with the usual tacky tourist attractions, motels, campgrounds, and gift shops. Everyone’s seen photos of Mt. Rushmore, but it’s quite a treat to visit in person and learn the story of how this national memorial came to be. The Crazy Horse monument was slightly more interesting, in our opinion. The project was begun in 1948 after Chief Standing Bear wrote to sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and asked him to carve a monument honoring Native American heroes. He worked on it alone for many years. After his death in 1982, his widow and children continued the project. The head was finally unveiled in 1998, but there is no official ... read more

There will be flurry of messages since we are arriving home VERY soon! Do to technical difficulties we have been writing blogs but have been unable to publish them. We awoke in Belvidere, SD and hit the road for what we knew would be a long day of driving. South Dakota is a BIG state!!! We had one last stop in SD and that was the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. I had no idea what the corn palace was and I can quite honestly say that it was a very unique visit. The outside of the corn palace is redone each year do to the birds eating all those luscious kernels. The design of the palace incorporates all corn pieces and parts. This year’s theme, Everyday Heroes…and guess what? Teachers are on it, hurray. The ... read more

Hello! Welcome to our first official entry. First 3 days were driving in the rain. We didn't pick up any hitchhikers so there isn't much to type about. We arrived in South Dakota the end of the 3rd day. Day 4 (the 14th) we stopped in the 1880 town. Apparently it's a shrine to Dances with Wolves and there were a lot of movie props/references that we didn't get. Then we stopped in Badlands N.P. The scenery was unbelievable. Rather than describe it, just check the photos. There were herds of buffalo there too but you couldn't get close enough for a good picture. We ate in the town of Wall. The billboards advertising Wall started 322 miles away and we saw them repeatedly about every 10 miles. There wasn't much to see there. One of ... read more

What's hot: Jackalope. Travel lesson of the day: Build it and they will come. from Kathy: This day, August 4, deserves another entry for our return visit to Wall Drug in Wall, SD, and to Interior, SD, the birthplace of Clark Griswold, our little Prairie Dog mascot. Whether you’re going east or west on Rt. 90. you’ll begin to encounter signs—lots of them—for Wall Drug at least 125 miles before you get there. Any Pittsburghers here old enough to remember the Burma Shave signs that lined the pre-Rt. 79 roads to Erie, Pennsylvania? Or does anyone remember the Mail Pouch Tobacco signs on the sides of barns? Wall Drug is perhaps one of the clearest cases of build-it-and-they-will-come I’ve ever seen. According to its Web site, it started at the worst of the Depression and they ... read more

What's hot: Devil’s Tower What's not: Hog Heaven Travel lesson of the day: Vegetarians are not appreciated in the Hamburger Nation. Odometer reading: 6,053 in the morning, 6,429 at night from Kathy: Herds of antelope play in the fields along the highway beyond Gillette, WY (I call them ‘cantaloupe’ to irritate the kids). We drive. Small oil wells pump. Coal cars line the endless train tracks. I hope I remembered to turn off the unnecessary electronics in the house before I left. What is the difference between oil and propane and natural gas? Blueberries and huckleberries are advertised everywhere in these August places and I wonder about my berry plants back home. We are on the way to Devil’s Tower National Monument and there are five Christian churches hovering along the rout... read more

Since the last time I wrote we were playing in the Tetons. We awoke at Flagg Ranch for a day in Yellowstone National Park. I apologize in advance to all of you out there that have been to Yellowstone and LOVED it. I LIKE it. Nick really wanted to see Old Faithful so we decided that we would do a 60 mile loop within the park which would allow us to see about 40 sulfur spewing geysers, waterfalls and painpots. We got to Old Faithful and had to wait only 45 minutes until the next display of thermal activity. We got front row spots for the 2 minute show. It was good and the boys’ were glad to have seen it. We then did a 2 mile walk around the geyser where there were many smaller ... read more
Posing at Wall Drug....
Chris and I

Today we went through the Badlands National Park and hiked many really cool paths around rattle snake country looking for animals and great views. I brought along the Flip Video camera and edited a short movie. Check it out! After the Badlands we headed for world famous Wall Drug. Yes, we got the free ice water and checked out all the wonderful eats and souvenir stores, but I didn't buy anything there in Wall. We checked into our hotel in Rapid City and found a great brewery down on Main Street called the Firehouse Brewing Company. I had a rancher's pie for lunch with a couple of their own brews including my favorite the smoke jumper's stout. The rancher's pie was mashed potatoes and carrots topped with corned beef and gravy. It was very good! After ... read more
