It’s a shame that Jackson, WY has become a tourist trap. Real estate is very expensive, shops are packed with souvenir tee-shirts, ball caps, and Western-themed stuff made in China; and the town is full of camera-wielding Asian, European, and American visitors. Of course, we are visitors, too; so, there you have it. There are some very good restaurants in town, although pricey. And, the Western Art Museum is wonderful. But the main reason for coming is to visit Grand Teton National Park. The Tetons are beautiful, especially when covered almost to the base with late spring snow. We shouldn’t complain, really, since we got permission to dry-camp for free in the newly paved parking lot at Teton Village ski resort. It was the off-season, and the Village was fairly empty. Skiing was over for the ... read more

From sunny southern Utah, we headed to snowy Dubois, WY. This real cowboy town is located just east of the Wind River Mountains in northwest Wyoming. A few days into our stay, we woke up to 6 inches of fresh snow. After a few days of really cold weather, we settled in to jeans and light jackets. Our RV park was situated right next to the Wind River. Snowpack this winter was many times the normal amount, so we watched the river carefully, considering it was mere feet from our site. Deer practically lived in our campground. Did you know they eat dandelion flowers? We took several drives along Forest Service roads to see elk, Rocky Mountain sheep, and moose. On several trips, we had to turn back prematurely because of either snow or deep mud. ... read more

One side trip we really enjoyed was to Snow Canyon State Park. There is no snow there; the park was named after the Snow family. It is a desert park with unusual rock formations, sculpted sandstone mountains, and beautiful spring flowers. Here are some pictures. ... read more

With fuel prices heading skyward, we cancelled our Alaska plans and decided to head to Wyoming and Montana instead. On the way north, we stopped for a while in Laughlin and Mesquite, NV, and Hurricane, UT. Laughlin is nothing but a casino town on the Colorado River. Mesquite, another casino town, is also becoming a retirement haven, although development has slowed somewhat due to the economy. Hurricane, UT is near St. George in southwest Utah, close to the Arizona and Nevada borders. It was first settled by the Mormons from Salt Lake City as “Dixie” or a cotton- and crop-growing region and a summer haven for Brigham Young back in the day. A real pioneer spirit is evident in the area, and there is a Mormon church on every corner, it seems. Diane did quite a ... read more

Heading to Texas was a bit uneventful, which was a good thing, since we skirted some stormy weather on the way. Dan took Diane to the shooting range, where she tried out his 36 caliber handgun--a bit more powerful than the 22 she was using. Dan and Megan are getting married in May 2012, and we were so excited to share their plans. We cooked shrimp and grits for them, went out for some Texas BBQ, and had dinner with Megan’s mom, too. Soon it was time to say goodbye, and we headed to Sedona, Arizona for a timeshare exchange family reunion with Alan and his family. On the way there, we overnighted at a Texas rest stop, a New Mexico casino, and an Arizona rest stop. Between New Mexico and Sedona, we encountered some really ... read more

We arrived at Mark and Heidi’s just in time for Halloween. This year, Alex became a brave fireman. We spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with them, too; and in February we kidnapped Alex for a few days to spoil him, just as grandparents should. We spent time with Diane’s mom, too, and visited with other relatives at sister Mary Ann’s second home in Leesburg, now the gathering place for family escaping winter in Pennsylvania. We also visited Diane’s sister Debbie and her husband Dick, who also have a second home in Florida. One of the highlights of Diane’s winter was learning to shoot a handgun. Taught by the local sheriff’s department, a group of 50 went to the gun range for a lesson and shootout. Diane was thrilled to get one bullseye (from 50 feet) and several ... read more

Arriving in Pennsylvania, we learned Diane’s cousin Virginia had passed away after surgery. They were two years apart and used to get into trouble together as youngsters. She left us way too soon. The silver lining of that tragedy is that we were able to visit with some of Diane’s relatives whom we hadn’t seen in a long time. We spent a week with sister Carol and husband Ted at their home in Waynesboro, PA. Interesting that Alan was born at Waynesboro Hospital, where Carol and Ted worked before their retirement. Small world…. Ted took the two of us on a driving trip to Gettysburg, where he played Civil War Historian and told many interesting stories on the way over. We really enjoyed our visit, and Carol is a fantastic cook! Next stop was Richmond, VA ... read more

We spent the summer in Traverse City, Michigan. A lovely town on the shores of Lake Michigan, Traverse City is home to a nationally recognized Film Festival, a Cherry Festival, and a whole host of recreational, cultural, and gastronomic opportunities. The Moody Blues were one of the featured summer concerts at the Interlachen Center for the Arts nearby, and we definitely enjoyed the show. Mark, Heidi, and Alex vacationed in northern Michigan in early July, so we got to spend some time with them as well. Diane made a cherry pie for Alex’s third birthday and we had a little cookout to celebrate. We also made some very nice new friends—Kent and Phyllis, Tom and Nancy, Marv and Alicia, Ken and Suzanne, and Pete and Denise, to name a few. We had lunch with friends Ken ... read more

Organizing pictures can be overwhelming. What other excuse could I have for waiting a whole year to update the blog… On our way to Texas in spring 2010, we stopped in Alabama to visit friends Patti and Bill. We cruised Lake Martin on their boat and jet ski, played lots of Sequence and Wizard, and enjoyed Patti’s great cooking. We loved the area and even looked at a few homes for sale. We have no idea yet when or where we’ll settle down, but it never hurts to look. After a maintenance stop in Dallas and visits with Dan and Megan, we headed to Branson, since we’ve never been there and were told it was a fun place. We took in a couple of shows and were duly impressed. The billboard for the Titanic show, however, ... read more

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas - we were happy to spend these holidays with son Mark, daughter-in-law Heidi, and grandson Alex. There is nothing like a grandchild to make you smile. All of the pleasure and none of the hassles of childrearing! Diane and her sisters took her mom Julia on a cruise for her 80th birthday. They scheduled the trip for a month later than her October birthday, to avoid any potential hurricanes. Wouldn't you know the only hurricane of the season blew through that exact November week. Fortunately, the cruise line was able to flip-flop the itinerary. No problem, and only one day of rain! Of course, not all was rosy. Diane fell off her bicycle right before Christmas and broke her wrist. Note to self: don’t try and answer cell phone while riding bike—almost as ... read more
