The adventures of today started in the middle of the night when Levi woke up with a fever. He was up twice and was hot and irritable. Luckily he was a pretty good sport all day and we were able to force some medicine into him as needed. He really wishes he could get normal naps in his bed. He never naps very well or very long in the stroller or the car. Poor kid! Despite our many efforts to get an earlier start to our day, it was still 10:15 before we had the car re-packed and everyone loaded up. We started out by heading to a Denver suburb North of town to visit at mall with a Hanna Andersson store. This store is one of Sarah's favorites for kids clothes (and occasionally matching mom ... read more

Today was supposed to just be a driving day, but that changed quickly as we got closer to our target of western South Dakota. The first third of the state was boring - it reminded me a lot of rural southern Minnesota, which itself looks like most of Iowa, western Illinois, Indiana, Ohio.... You get the point. But then the scenery changed rapidly. We were transported to a new world where the farms gave way to rolling green hills and picturesque sights. What a change! We also saw our first New Jersey car in Sioux Falls when we stopped for a short lunch break. Strangely enough, they had connections to Lake Hopatcong too! It's funny who you can meet as you drive across the country. As we continued driving, we decided to take a short detour ... read more

South Dakota, and over into Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan Saturday August 9 to Monday August 11, 2008 Mt. Rushmore With many bikers sharing the road, we drove southwest a bit to circle Mt. Rushmore. Declining the fairly steep entrance fee, we snapped photos from the highway at 2 different vantage points, and made our way east again; we would have liked to take Rte 44 to reach Badlands National Park, rather than the Interstate, but being short on time, opted for speed, and entered the park via the town of Wall. There we stopped at a gas station to use the rest room, and get snacks and coffee. Outside there was a coin-operated horse ride - and Rollie clowned around for the camera (Miles and I got in on the action too). They also had a ... read more

Good evening from Rapid City, South Dakota. Well, were back in America, which is great. We were in Billings, Montana last week. We arrived around 11:30 am last monday there and it was 50 degrees and sunny. We all went crazy. We haven't had that kind of weather in a long time. By 1 in the afternoon it was in the 60's and we were all outside in lawn chairs, grilling. And then some one bought a wiffal ball set and we played the rest of the afternoon, even when it starting hailing and raining. We didn't care. It was that much of a relief to not be in 40 below weather! The next day it dropped to 35 degrees and I went ouside and was warm. It blew my mind that 35 felt warm!! I ... read more

Our journey to South Dakota began from Texas. We drove through Oklahoma, along route 66 for a while, stopping off at Pops Petrol Station - which is a road side attraction of a huge soda bottle and in the store they have loads of soda in different bottles. We also stopped off at the Round Barn before we mapped our new course through Kansas and onto Nebraska. While in Nebraska we visited the small town of Alliance and visited Carhenge. We rested a while at the rest stop and kept on driving to Jailhouse and Courthouse Rock, they are two of the most famous landmarks of the mid 1800's westward migration. Nearby is the Oregon-California Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Pony Express Trail and the Sidney-Deadwood Trail. The rocks were vanguards of the unforgettable scenic wonders ... read more

Well we have one day to experience the most of this area of the US, so better get out of bed it’s 8 am. Brekky for free in the hotel sweet! A WAFFLE MAKER! Bloody hell I’m in heaven! Some big, industrial sized waffle maker is sitting in the corner just begging for my attention! 3 dinner plate sized waffles with butter and maple syrup later I’m full as a goog, ready for the day. Argh…. First stop is the obligatory tour of Mt Rushmore. A big statue carved in the mountain, I’m so excited I don’t know what to expect! He he Well ... read more

The last two days were spent traveling through South Dakato and Wyoming. I am awe struck at the magnitude of the west. Farms that stretch for miles and roads that connect one small town to another. What must life be like for these families? How and where do the children go to school? A bus ride would be for hours. I drove by a town called Lost Springs with the population advertised as 1!! The Black Hills are spectacular and carved within them is Mt. Rushmore. The honor given to the four presidents who began this country and kept it going in the spirit of freedom and liberty is told in this majectic sculpture. On to Crazy Horse a sculpture just begun in honor of the native americans who have lost their land. I went on ... read more
