Driving into New York in the morning rush hour was a thing you have to see to believe, people using their horns as much as their brakes and as for red lights they may as well not be there. Anyway we managed to negotiate the traffic and with carefully planned directions thanks to google maps the night before we found our hotel no problem, the fact it was about 45 stories high also helped! We managed to check in but our room wasn’t ready until later so we ditched our bags and headed to take our trusty car back, hoping to get it there in 1 piece, which thankfully we managed. We were due to meet our Danish friends at their hotel in the early afternoon so it gave us the morning to get a ... read more

After a brief nights stopover on our way to the nations capital we managed to find a motel about 10 miles outside the centre with a rather handy free shuttle to the local train station for easy access to all the sights Washington Dc has to offer. We settled in and planned our next days activities which basically involved lots and lots of walking. The next morning, up early(ish) and after a 30 min train ride we were right in the heart of the city. And it seems we stepped right into the political heart of the city as soon as we left the station we saw a load of news reporters outside the steps of the mayors building reporting on a rather historic ruling on gun ownership in DC which was all over the TV ... read more

The next couple of days were just spent driving further east. We stopped off in Cleveland which looked like a really nice place, didnt have time to stop and have a look around unfortunatly as we spent ages trying to find a motel- there was some kind of Gay rights festival on so most of the motels were full, d'oh. Finally the followng day at about 4 o'clock we arrived in Niagara. We found a nice cheap motel and the lady there told us that night there would be fireworks down by the falls, they're set off on the Canadian side but apparently you get a good view of them from the american side too. So that was our evening organised, we had a few hours to kill first so just chilled out watching tv ... read more

We spent the next two drives just driving, stopping off to find motels in Sioux Falls and then Madison. Then on the Thursday we had the short drive into Chicago to do, this should have been short anyway- 2 hours according to the map! Ofcourse the map didnt take into account how bad the traffic would be, in the end it took us about 4 to get into the city centre. We'd had no real issues finding motels anywhere so far so we decided not to book anywhere here but struggled to find any in the city (apart from expensive looking hotels) so we headed to the visitor info to get some advise and hopefully another coupon book. Only problem with our plan was the lack of parking near the visitor info so we ended ... read more

Our next motel appeared in the form of a studio style with kitchen etc. for the bargain price of $41.99 our cheapest digs so far in America all with the help of a little voucher in a coupon book, our new accommodation bible! This was just on the outskirts of Denver which is the mile high city as it is officialy 1 mile above sea level (well what else did you think we meant). After settling in we headed into the city centre to see what we could do for a couple of days as our room was soooo nice and Denver has a backdrop of the snow capped rocky mountains it was surely too nice to leave too soon. We managed to park for free and headed to the tourist info along a nice pedestrianised ... read more

Santa Fe wasn't on our original itinerary, but Sophie who we'd met in Fiji said they were going and it sounded like a really nice place so we decided to go on a slight detour before heading up north. The journey was again long and very hot (in the 90s) but we were starting to get used to it and we'd been able to download some new podcasts by Chris Moyles and Scott Mills (good old Radio 1) so that kept us going. We arrived late in the afternoon and quickly found a fairly cheap motel just outside of town. Ofcourse now we were in New Mexico we had to do the right thing and eat mexican food.... so we did, but dont know if it really counts as it was a burito from Taco ... read more

Right well as Gra has used up all of his blogging energy on Vegas Im afraid it's back to me for this one. The drive from Vegas was desert, desert and more desert and was extremely hot, but after treating ourselves to the Hilton we were back in our budget backpackers mind so only allowed ourselves a blast of air con every 20 mins (do you know how much extra fuel the car uses when the air cons on?!) After about an hour we same across the Hoover Dam which was pretty impressive- and BIG. After about another 4 hours of driving/melting we arrived in Flagstaff and found our Days Inn motel which we'd already booked as we'd heard it can get really busy at weekends. Unfortunatly when we booked it we didnt realize that ... read more

So our tactics were to win more money than we started with, and i mean before our world trip! Ok a little adventurous especially as we were pretty much going to hit the 1 cents machines and make our gambling last as long as possible. The drive to Vegas was basically through the desert so was very hot especially as there wasn't a cloud in the sky, that was until we reached the bright lights of Vegas, well what we could see of it through the sand storm that was positioned right over the centre. We could however see the edge of the storm so we ducked in to a factory outlet village for shelter which of course made Lisa V.happy. We did a bit of "window" shopping spending our future winnings before heading to our ... read more

The 7 hour bus trip up to San francisco was pretty boring really as we went on the main highway which was the fastest but definatly not the most scenic route. The most exciting part of the journey was when the bus driver made an unplanned stop and announced that one of his contact lenses had come out! That may have explained why we bumped into something (couldnt see but think it was the back of a car) 10 minutes previously! Anyway we arrived at San Fran bus station about 7.30 and for once we'd done the right thing and booked a motel while we were in LA, only problem was we didnt know how to get there. Luckily a local guy helped us out and sent us off on the right bus and 20 ... read more
