What a day! We had 13 hours on the road today and it was the hottest to date. The offical temperature was 44 degrees, however with the heat off the road and engines we can easily add 15 degrees. It's now 10.30pm and we have just finished dinner. After a 5.30am start and 327 miles done we are feeling reasonably good. We woke this morning to hear on the news that a lady had been hit and run up the road from the hotel and the local service station called Kum and Go (I kid you not - its a major franchise!) had been held up. Later in the day we passed bush fires that didnt look too good. We had an awesome morning ride before the temperature got up, we stopped at a little roadside ... read more

At last a day off to rest up and catch up with things put aside. For the second time this year I find myself in El Reno 25 miles west of Oklahoma City working on one of the two Braums farms (www.braums.com). This time we are cutting 7300 acres of silage corn (maze). I have been here 2 1/2 weeks so far and we have about 18 circles to go. This trip has presented us with some scary moments. In the first week two of the drivers rolled their loaded trucks in relatively easy driving locations, another driver broke his truck axel after trying to get unstuck from sand (impossible once you are there), choppers have broken down, lightening storms overhead (not cool to be in a machine and hit by a bolt of lightening), and ... read more

So far this has been a great trip. The twists and turns of Route 66 as well as the hidden suprises have been fun and exciting all along. Even so, the rest days Tony built into the trip have been wonderful. Today we slept in late and went to the waterpark. That's it. No cool historic places or facinating bridges. No science museums or monuments (of which there are many in Oklahoma City). Just pure fun and commercialism and we loved every minute of it. Tomorrow it's back to the road, leaving Oklahoma behind, cutting through a corner of Kansas, and heading into Missouri.... read more

So, after a night in what started as a very hot motel (the air con was initially broken, resulting in a sauna for a room, but luckily fixed!) we had a big drive ahead! We were booked into a motel in Amarillo, home of the big Texan steakhouse. Only a short couple of stops were possible today, one for the totem pole park (several giant concrete totem poles in a field) and another for the blue whale in Catoosa (a giant fibreglass whale who sits in a pond next to Route 66). We made it to Amarillo, with time to spare for a few beers (or in Ellie's case, cocktails) and a massive steak.... read more

Today was a longish drive (280+ miles) from Amarillo to Oklahoma City. We decided not to try and leave super early, given the time change yesterday, so we did some laundry, rode bikes, played on the playground and left just before 10. We did not eat breakfast, other than a small snack, preferring not to cook in the heat. We thought that we would grab a bite at a restaurant right away. Turns out that our Route 66 path did not have a restaurant any time soon.. What the route did have is a few interesting diversions. At one point, they built an airport on top of the old route, so we had to go miles out of the way to pick the old road back up again. The road in this area is mostly original ... read more

I have recently bought a new Toyota Pickup and a 30' foot travel trailer and have been taking a few short trips to become acclimated to driving and parking the trailer. Parking the trailerare the key words here. After using an hour of my time and 1/2 tank of gas I have discovered that parking a trailer is no easy task. With my son anxiously watching and giving encouraging words, I gave up the first attempt thinking I would find a cliff to push the thing over and be done with it. However things got better when I discovered most RV Parks have pull through parking spaces. I am still trying to improve my skills and am quite confident that I will persevere. If nothing else, I am quite stubborn and don’t give up easily. My ... read more

OK, it would take a week to do Tulsa properly so we decided that we wouldn't do anything in Tulsa, apart from drive through on 11th Street (Route 66)!! There is just so much to see in the cities that it is overwhelming and somewhat distracting from the Route 66 experience of driving through 'middle America'. So, we headed back to 11th Street this morning and drove all the way through Tulsa to Southwest Boulevard which had us heading off to Red Fork on Historic Route 66. On the way we managed to photograph the neon sign at the Rancho Grande. We drove south-westerly on the northern side of I-44 through Red Fork, Oakhurst and Bowden before crossing to the southern side of the interstate and into Supulpa where we took a photo of the Happy ... read more

This morning the plan was to start driving west before the middle of the day. The last two days it has been after one o'clock before we have really been underway!! So, we thought that we would have a quick drive into the Historic Square downtown take a couple of quick photos, drive past Boots Motel for a photo and then spend half an hour having one last look for Red Oak II. That was the plan! We made a good start and took a couple of quick photos in the Historic Square and then we drove around the corner to the classic art-deco Boots Motel. We took a couple of quick photos there too and we were ready to head off when Ron came out and asked if we would like a look around. Ron ... read more

We slept late this morning and got on the road even later than usual, 10:05. Driving on the interstate is pretty boring if all is going well. We saw lots of clouds this morning, something we haven't seen much of since we were in Oregon, but not much in the way of rain. We just had an occasional mist, not enough to turn on the wipers. At the Texas/New Mexico state line we entered the Central Time Zone. Now we're in the same zone as home. At Amarillo we stopped at the Cadillac Ranch and left our mark on one of the cadillacs. There were a couple of young men there who had broken off a chunk of paint. Those old cars have been sprayed so many times that the paint is an inch thick or ... read more

Today brought us beautiful weather and much more relaxed riding. We spent the day on Route 66, with only minimal time on the Interstate as we continued our trip southwest. We spent the majority of the day in Missouri passing through a lot of the small towns that used to support the traffic making the cross-country trip before the Interstate was finished. There were a lot of abandoned old garages and buildings, and a lot of old, rusted-out cars, but it really was full of character. We also got to see plenty of the kitschy things I expected. We saw the world's largest rocking chair, spent some time chatting with a guy and his wife who maintain a historical gas station for tourists to visit, and saw the crapduster (yes, crapduster, not a cropduster). We passed ... read more
